This user has the following games installed:

Sims 3, World Adventures, Ambitions, Late Night, Generations, Pets, Showtime, Supernatural, Seasons, University Life, Island Paradise
Default Very Slow. Tried Everything. Read Everything. Tried New.
I've just about had it with the sims 3. I've tried so many things out there and it just isn't running smoothly. I'll provide details. If anyone out there knows *anything* that I have missed, please let me know. I have read through so many guides and helps and tried just about everything. In my post, I may have missed some of the things I tried, but it's just because I don't remember right now.

WHAT I MEAN BY SLOW

When in *live* mode it takes 5-10 seconds for panning and zooming to take effect -- sometimes it doesn't even register. Panning only works bits at a time (5% of screen at most). Rotation has the same issue. This is on every lot.

I am currently playing Moonlight Falls. Load time can take 3-8 minutes. I have scrapped Moonlight Falls twice and replayed it. Same thing.

The same slowness happens in Egypt but not as bad. Load time takes 2-3 minutes.

SPECS

OS: Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU: Intel i7 960 4.3 Ghz
RAM: 12GB (3x4)
HD: 7200 WD 2TB (with 400GB free and optimized/defragged) -- OS is on SSD 240GB
GPU: 2x GeForce 560 Ti

SIMS 3

All EP except Future
All Content Packs except: Late Night, 70s-80s-90s, Movie Stuff

Original purchase was Steam Sims 3 super pack that included about 5-6 expansions up to Supernatural and Diesel Stuff (maybe Showtim, too).

CUSTOM CONTENT

None. I've removed it all due to issues.

GAME SETTINGS

Lowered graphics:
Reflection: Mirrors only
Edge Smoothing: Low
Visual Effects: Medium
Lighting: Low
Tree Detail: Medium
Draw Distance: Low
High Detail Lots: 1
Texture Detail: Low
Sim Detail: Low
Enable Object Hiding: Off
Enable Animation Smoothing: Off
Enable Advanced Rendering: On

* I have tried lowering all of these to the LOWEST setting and I still get slowness. The only one that showed some improvement was unchecking "Enable Advanced Rendering". *

I've tried both windowed and non-windowed. Currently: Windowed.

Autonomy: Low and Off
Enable Aging: Off
Online: Off
Seasons: On (except Rain -- it completely renders play useless)

Memories: Disabled

Interactive Load: Off

Story Progression: Off

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
ATTEMPTED IMPROVEMENTS
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I don't start from launcher
I hav given executable administrative privs
Delete standard cache files
Delete the four .package files
DEP tweak just for giggles

NVIDIA

- attempted vertical sync on/off -- no difference.
- also tried to change settings to "performance" vs. quality
- Reverted NVidia version to 334.89 since latest update (2015-01-04 - ish - 230.52?) kept crashing my loads.

SYSTEM

-AntiVirus Off
-Exited and killed ALMOST ALL application (beleive me when I say this. I had a core 4 user applications running and about 12 system applications. I also stopped all non-essential services).

PROCESS

- ProcExp: Analyze threads and any possible locked file handles, contentions, leaks. There are a few smelly threads such as d3dx9_31.dll and nvd3dum.dll (only because of WS numbers).
- MSVCR80.dll!_endthreadex+0x61 seems to have the most CPU usage (5%). With latest driver version this had rocketed up to 20%. Now it is back down to 5%.
- Process Priority: High
- 106 threads, total CPU: 12-14%
- I usually start at about 1.4GB usage. When it hits the limit of 2GB is when my saves usually start becoming corrupted. I have just learned to exit and restart before it gets to that limit.

GAME

I exported my Household and deleted my "The Sims 3" user folder. When the game started it recreated it. I imported my user. At first everything seemed peachy but then after about 4-6 hours of playtime it went back to the horror.

For shims and giggles I tried installing this on my son's alienware. It's only 2 years old and it cost $4000+. Guess what? After playing it for about 10-15 hours the game started crawling again. Not as bad as mine, but still extremely frustrating.

What gives? Is this just a bad game? Should I throw the hat in? It seems like there is a large community. It must work for SOMEONE. Either that or we put up with this poo because we like the game concept so much. I won't even shell out money for Sims 4 if this is what is in store for me. I don't EVER remember Sims or Sims 2 being this bad. I remember some crashes here and there, but nowhere near the performance issues.

Finally, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No go.

CUSTOM

Good ol Overwatch, MasterController, and ErrorTrap. It reports that it fixed a lot. I didn't *perceive* an improvement but when I went throgh my timings there was an average 6% improvement.

--

I am sure I tried other things and if I remember I will post them. PLEASE HELP ME. I would love to be able to keep playing. I can't play anymore.

@carlosfhernandez , since you have 12 GB of RAM and using Windows 7, I recommend you to do the bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA NNNN 'trick' to increase stability of Sims 3.

NNNN here should be between 2048 and 3072, inclusive.

Doing so will prevent the problem with the 2 GB limit (since the limit is effectively increased).

Also: Did you remember to turn off the "memories" system? That superbuggy thing will not only cause slowdown, it's a huge memory hog + disk space hog.

Nobody is Perfect. I am Nobody. And I'm trying to make something wonderful for The Sims 3.

Ahh, you're right. The statement of "hitting 2GB limit" caught me there.

According to the wiki, starting version 1.17/2.12/3.8/4.5/5.2/6.0, The Sims 3 is Large Address Aware.

Thanks for quick responses all. Here are my comments:

nitromon:
1. I will put my config at the end as to not clutter all responses.
2. cache: recreation doesn't take that long--I've timed it. To be specific, I am talking about DCBackup. I only have two files in there, anyway, over the last 30 saves or so. I am also talking about Featured Items. Those also get recreated very quick.
3. "accidentally turn off apps..." Agreed. I am a software architect/designer. I've worked in this industry for a long time. Don't worry. I also did it step-fashion, turning off 3-4 at a time. It took me a good 4-5 hours without meaningful result. I've done this many times. I set my system up for various boot modes when I want to squeeze out performance or do certain analysis.
4. Yes patch 1.67, I forgot to mention.
5. Oh yes, I don't play for more than 2 hours at a time...if I can even get that far. Now I can only play about one hour before getting too frustrated. I mostly do Buy/Build mode since the lag isn't present in that mode.

SAVES
I save every 10 minutes. I call it a new name, e.g. "Moonlight Falls 153", "Moonlight Falls 154". I've learned my lesson after corrupted saves. I only leave the last 5 save game folders in my saves folder. I move the other ones to a backup folder elsewhere and archive them.

@pepoluan
1. Memories is turned off, yes.
2. I will check out "bcdedit /set IncreaseUserVA NNNN". I will backup executable. I will test. I will restore executable. I don't think this would have an impact since my game starts at 1.4GB memory and immediately has the slow problem.

@nitromon
1. Yes patched to 1.67 -- it originally came patched to that level with the big steam package (includes 5-6 EPs).
2. I'm running 64-bit Windows.

I think you have stuck sims, perhaps horses, or sims with routing failures. It happens in nearly every world and slows the game to a crawl. In the TS3 help section there is a thread called "How to quickly find sims experiencing routing problems". Its solution is very helpful. When you find a stuck sim, try to change the issue that caused the problem, if possible. For example, the V-shaped trees trap horses- delete them. Good luck, I hope you find a solution.

The ErrorTrap info is quite informative. There's a "moondial" somewhere that's buggy, and all sims using that moondial seems to get reset.

If you can find this "moondial", I suggest you delete it and readd it to the world.

Sorry, can't give more detailed instructions. I suggest uploading the ErrorTrap result to the NRaas community.

The Moondial error is actually quite harmless. It just fails to display the proper moon phase when ErrorTrap catches it.
As far as I know, Sims don't use it on their own so the erroring Sims are likely not connected to any moondial errors.

But yes, Error Trap files should be uploaded to NRaas Industries; they know more about how to read them.

Ahh, I see. I'm out of ideas then...

I had wildly guessed that it has got something to do with the moondials, because "IndexOutOfRangeException" would cause whatever function accessing the iterator to return a null, and this null got consumed by the Actor.Sim objects, resulting in "SacsErrorException: Host object was not found."

Hey,

First of all, this may or may not fix your problem, however your graphics card is not being recognized by Sims 3.

To fix this, follow this Link

Please fix this issue first.

Also, are you using dual graphics cards? If you are, make sure Sims is running your Nvidia card by right clicking on the icon and choose "run with graphics processor" and pick your Nvidia GPU. Source Link If you are not using dual graphics cards, ignore this.

After running the game, please paste just the "=== Graphics device info ===" from your new deviceconfig here.

Thanks for the information. I did this and finally got the line, "[Found: 1, Matched: 1]" to appear--in other words, it recognized my card. This appeared to do nothing. It seems, to me, that all this does is read your card to preconfigure your default graphics settings for the game. The writer of the article stated that the game "may" go weird because the user may change those settings to something the card does not support. Since I had already put all my settings on LOW or OFF, this didn't have an effect. THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION, THOUGH!

The second one talked about making sure the correct card was selected to render the 3d graphics. I think I indirectly explained in my original posting that my grfx card was actually being used. I don't have integrated. I only have 2 GTX 560 Ti.

UPDATE

I kept trying many things and one finally helped a little (but not enough to make the game playable). In city mode I started to bulldoze all empty lots. I would do 3 at a time and restart the game. I would then use nraas to clean up the game (for some reason it always reports 1000s of cars being cleaned up). And each restart would make the game go a little faster. Just a LITTLE.

After destroying ALL my empty lots I can now pan with several seconds delay and some stuttering. It's not playable like this but at least I can pan. Doing some timings, I averaged 27% better. Still not good enough, but hey, it helped.

I will try a completely new town next with my exported family (just one person by the way) and lot.

One more idea: for the car problem, you can use NRAAS Traffic mod, which lets you limit the number of vehicles nonactive sims use.

In general, it is not a good idea to play TS3 without a fps limiter.

It appears NOT to be a graphics issue. It was starting to smell like something different. The fact that I had lowered ALL settings and that I had the same issue on my son's super Alienware (my same save game) made me think otherwise.

So I did a lot more testing. I created a NEW town (moonlight) and added my exported house and sim. Terrible. Same thing. Can't move. I switched families to the 3-story house and everything was smooth!!! Perfectly smooth like I was used to before.

So then I exported my sim only and put him on a BRAND NEW EMPTY LOT. Guess what? It was slow. Same slow. Dead slow.

Ok. This had to be related to my sim. So I started experimenting. I removed his inventory items (in chunks). The first chunk improved performance. The second chunk was a DRAMATIC increase. And the final one returned the performance close to normal speed -- about 75%.

So, either some items in the inventory (I had already done nraas inventory cleanup many times) were causing some major issues, a combination of them were, or the amount was. I would hate to think that the amount caused issues. I had about 90-110 slots in my inventory. Some of those slots had up to 50-60 in number. Some only had one. When I removed the high count slots (thinking this could be the issue -- they were my garden items: fruits, coffee, spices, etc.) it didn't really seem to improve that much. It was about 5 stacks of 80,50,40,30,30.

So it looks like it is inventory related. I may go back and experiment one-by-one (arghhh!!!!) to see which items (or combos) are causing issues.

In the package file simname.package I saw an entry of type "FAMD". I was wondering if that stores inventory items. I would love to be able to do an inventory analysis on my sim export. ANYONE KNOW HOW?

And thanks everyone for the help so far!!!!!

BY THE WAY, my fps hover around 200-220.

I just wanted to close this out and report some findings.

The inventory *quantities* did in fact have an impact on the game speed. It was not one specific item, but several of then. Not all of the items impacted the game. I did not pursue any detailed investigation as to exactly which items had an effect and to what degree.

The is was completely verified when I:
1. Deleted "Sims 3" folder completely and had game recreated a new one
2. Imported my character only (without home)
3. Tested game slowness
4. Removed inventory items, groups at a time
5. When all inventory items were gone they game was blitzingly fast

FURTHERMORE ...

1. Grabbing these items again BACK into my inventory still slowed the game back down BUT NOT AS MUCH!
2. I ran Overwatch and it killed my Pemicans --- For some reason it didn't like them. This increased my game speed. (Each increase is a MEASURABLE increase in speed)
3. Overwatch's nightly cleanups started to work great. The error trap was a miracle as it would catch things that in the past would obviously cause issues with the game (grabbing festival eggs)
4. Finally, the No Limo patch made my game cruise at a perfect speed, even with an enormous lot, 6-story home with 5-level basement, and graphic settings all high. I could even load up my inventory with all sorts of needless junk.

Hope this helps others.

Cheers.
