ShortyBoo, I just learned from this mod comments thread http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=424222 that bluegenjutsu has a mod at CrazyTown that stops the game auto-placing lots.

Apparently it's all handled by an XML file, which is what the mod I just linked adjusts. So it should be possible to fine-tune the behavior in other ways as well, as that mod does.

I also have this problem.... however as far as I am aware my variation of the problem has not been mentioned yet.[please correct me if I am wrong]

-I have all three main expansions[no stuff packs]
-After a lengthy search of Bridgeport I have found no such ''Grey lots'' anywhere
-I have no Ambitions lots in the lot bin apart from the ones that were placed there by the game.
-I do have custom lots from this site in the lot bin placed in between the Ambitions and Late Night lots in the lot bin

If any of this information is of any use to finding a cure to my version of this predicament,or indeed if someone does find a cure to my predicament, By all means share it with me. Please however note that I have little to no understanding in the terminology and/or structure of Sims 3 files, therefore try to explain any such remedies in simple terms that anyone could understand.

I found a fix. I was buzzing throught the ea site for The Sims 3 Late Night community thread.
To fix the crashing you go to(for XP users) your Start>Control Panel>Performance & Maintainance>System>Advanced>in Performance field,Settings>Performance Options comes up>hit the Data Execution Prevention tab and unchecked Sims3. I also cleaned my cache files out and added to Data Execution Prevention, Sims3Launcher. Restarted computer, ran game, and all my worries are over! I have CC installed on my game as well. Been stable for over an hour now!

Now, if someone could translate all that over to Vista's menu's I might be able to do somthing.

I hope that Vista didn't get rid of the option to view your system from Control Panel!

Mine still crashes , I've got Late Night only as my EP . still , none of this works for me, I don't have a gray lot either . Some say it's because of the new patch .

Default incomplete
Try making a copy of a house that played before and planting it on an empty lot in Bridgeport before you play. Click on that house first and try it. I deleted the gray lot and rebuilt that junkyard, but it wouldnt save, It would crash so I grabbed a house from my tray to see if it would save on the lot and it did. I played that house for a bit saved and reloaded. I have not had one problem since. I would omit deleting anything and just play the older house even if you dont keep it there. I think its like making a preloaded save file. That one has already saved so now there is a framework to save.

I had already put the exe's through DEP and listed them in task manager.
I could play the other towns.
I deleted the gray lot *nogo*
I planted a house from Sunset Vally that played just fine ... no problems since.

Its just a copy so the family is in two places now, each at different stages, IE Sam and Farah Sekemoto have two girls on Bridgeport and no children in Sunset Valley.

i played fine yesterday . I just uninstalled the sims 3 late night and re-installed it again . then added the .exe of late night (TS3EP03.exe) to the DEP list . I can now play the live mode without crashing but my launcher still crashes so I just clicked the TS3EP03.exe to play it. ( I also removed my CC)

Thanks Diovarus! Deleting that pesky gray lot fixed the crashing.

Just a heads up for people who are still struggling.
I tried everything on the list, looked for grey lots - nothing, uninstalled reinstalled everything, DEP etc. Nothing worked and it kept crashing to desktop in live mode.
What was messing everything up for me was the Game Launcher.
So what I did, was not to start the Game Launcher and run it through the .exe.

I had the same problem and none of the fixes worked until I tried something out.

Make sure you have Microsoft's Framework.net downloaded, latest edition. Also make sure you do all the Windows updates you have available for it. Maybe not an issue for some but I turn automatic updates off.

There is a glitch which i have found. When you have an active household, you save it, sometimes, the list dissapears. I fixed that but my toddler was not on the Active Household list. Have any of you experinced that.

I had the EXACT same problem, but the cause was a little different.

My problem came down to one custom Sim I had just made, I kept trying and trying to move her into an apartment but the game just kept instantly crashing each time. But then when I tried moving in a completely different Sim the game was fine and has been fine since, regardless of about 5 crashes prior. I'm guessing there is some custom content on the Sims that seems to be sneakily crashing Late Night.

I had this problem as well...except when it would happen when I opened them up in CAS. My guess was the same as yours...that there's some CC on the sim that causes the game to crash.

Default Not working
So I tried the stuff was posted on this page, and i found a few other pages. Still nothing has helped me. I sent this to EA although I am sure they are going to send me back something useful like "Please Reinstall the game". If anybody could help me that would be great.

I just got Sims 3 Late Night, I already have all the Sims 3 expansions packs except for Fast Lane. Every game worked fine up until now. Within seconds of playing my game the Sims 3 Late Night will crash to the desktop. After searching your site I found NOTHING that solved this problem. I decided to Google some solutions. One site said to delete everything associated with The Ambitions Expansion Pack (Salon,Firehouse, Junkyard and Consignment Shop). I first tried that and it still continued to crash. Then I tried deleting the the Ambitions Expansion pack lots and relocating them to different lots. Once again it did not work.

I also UNINSTALLED AND REINSTALLED EVERY Sims 3 game and expansion pack. Didn't work. I then did the things I said before with the freshly installed games. Didn't work.

Not only did I do all this I have down a reg clean up, installed the latest version of Windows NET framework (4.0, if it is not 4.0 please direct me to the newest one). I also already have the latest version of DirectX (DirectX11 if I need to update that as well please let me know). Everything I have done has not worked. Now I have no where else to go. I have tried everything and NOTHING has worked. Please tell me why this isn't working or where I can get a refund.

Lastly, I attempted to use your EasyInfo utility. When I attempted to search for The Sims 3 game under the Update games list a 404 error came. So I was unable to give you my information. However here is some useful information I have collected for you.

How do i fix my memory problem so i can play my game
Inventor

I had crashing, ea helped me. I didnt' find any lots that were grayed though I did delete it anyway lol.. All my lots were fine but my eadm was bad. I reinstalled EADM. Uninstalled via add/remove programs (programs and features), then did the clean uninstall (as per ea's request), then did a reinstall. EA originally told me to reinstall as well (EVERYTHING) but I feared that so first I tried eadm but tested before anything else was removed.. EADM was the culprit. I feared my game wouldn't run as Sims 3 was digital download but by removing from add/remove programs, it left some things intact enough to still run the game.

Symptoms were launcher would throw DEP error and game would crash within seconds of loading. I'd like to add that the sims 3 error file stated access violation..

Thanks for posting of the lot though, i've left a link at ea about it for those who may have the same problem. I've seen it's kinda been an issue for quite a few people..

EDIT: I've read the dashboard tool helps find discrepancies, like sims 3 finding sims 2 when it shouldn't. But it's a bit tricky, got to do some reading on it to use it accurately.. cant' just fix all problems, some are not problems.. lol but running the scanner on your cc folder can help I've used it but mine didnt' find any real problems but, I do recommend it!

Found another solution...
I had the same problem and solve it with this post http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/283608.page or follow these instructions
* Add the Late Night .EXE files to your DEP list.

* Delete all your CACHE files. These contain "memories" of your earlier games.

When done Late Night should work fine.

Delete the following files:

simCompositorCache.package
CASPartCache.package
compositorCache.package
scriptCache.package

This should do it.

Excellent advice! I'd forgot to mention DEP since it didn't help me and to be honest, repeatedly telling it to ignore other programs became a nuisance to me. Once I changed from protecting core files to those listed, it began to fight me on many programs, including IExplorer.

Plus, DEP won't work on the launcher as the launcher file isn't accepted by the exclusion list for DEP, it'll deny it. It'll let you add s3launcher.exe or similar but not the other (? sims3launcher.exe) I've mentioned it elsewhere but I don't recall which launcher name it was, I just know it was the longer name that won't be accepted by DEP.

But, you CAN add your game titles to it, though again, it'll possibly give issues with other programs now and you'll have to add each one there after. I think that's why I got so desperate to just fix it.

I'm not knocking the DEP idea, I actually think it's fantastic there's another workaround so we can play. I just prefer to not use it if I don't have to, it drove me nuts lol.

Not that I'm promoting, yet I guess I am, the Delphy's Dashboard Tool is also capable of clearing your cache files (AND checking for trouble files in your mods). I ♥ that program for things like that! I've used it quite a while off and on as needed.

I am at a loss.. Sims 3: Late Night has been working great for me until tonight. For some reason, now, I am crashing to desktop for the first time since Ambitions. Here is my crash log.. IF anyone can help me I would appreciate it. I have tried to DEP/Delete cache fix. I really don't want to lose my houses/families again.

PS: I wish EA would really work on getting ALL of the bugs out of the expansions/game before release. It seems like every expansion/initial game install messes up somehow or another.
