If you use the launcher, it will automatically download the right patch (for example if your version is 1.6, it will download the 1.6 to 1.12 patch), so I don't really understand the question. Of course it would be stupid to manually download 1.6 to 1.7 and then 1.7 to 1.8 and so on.

if you're doing it manually, download the patch called <yourversion> to <currentversion>, which includes all the patches in between. If you can't find one, then you'd have to do it the slow way, as jonha mentioned.
