Picard was the ultimate Captain. I didn't like Kirk at all when I was younger. I totally went for the cerebral Spock and same with Picard. I appreciate Kirk, the man of action, more now but I still thiink Picard was so masterful...I mean such a good leader!!!

Picard was my vote. His diplomacy, tact, and personality could pull them through any situation. He's da man!

I like Janeway myself, she had so much adversity to face being flung into the Delta Quadrant, so many unknown perils. Plus Gurl Power!

uh...i don't know, maybe i'm too old skool, but i thought the answer would be obviously Captain James T. Kirk...but apparently not...

haha, nah, Kirk is too cocky and "mightier then though". I saw an episode the other day where he was going to arrest another Captain for violating the Prime Directive by defending a local tribe. I couldn't help but begin to count the number of times Kirk had done the very same thing himself...

Regardless, Kirk can be fun to watch sometimes.

Kirk, by far. In my opinion, a captain without zipper problems is no captain at all.

Janeway, definitely. First thing, she's a woman - that's always a plus ;-) Second thing, she is ... well ... human. I don't mean the race, I mean her personality, she just seems so real. Can't explain it.

And the others weren't?

All of them have their own personality, and their personality has made them human.

Kirk - A man of adventure, doesn't obey the rules when he has that gut feeling they're wrong and he's right.

Picard - A man of explore, he fully obeys the prime directive with loopholes galore, but ther is no loophole, Picard takes the chance and wiggles his way out of it.

Sisco - A man of duty, he takes care of Deep Space 9 in both disbelief and belief, trying to make things right when he doesn't know where to go.

Janeway - A woman of family, she struggled to get her crewmates back home even when every waking minute of their travel was full of hopelessness and more, but she maintained order and couldn't help severely bonding with everyone with her, creating that drive for home even stronger.

As for Archer, well, I keep forgetting to download Enterprise, and when I do, it's always estimated a year of endless downloading. And I watch all the movies.

I would have to agree with James009 on every point. Picard was the best. I like many things about Kirk, but sometimes those same heroic qualities that helped him also worked against him.

I will go against the trend, and say my favorite Captain is Sisco, but only because there is no Klingon captains mentioned. :p

I just enjoyed the ds9 series more than the others. The storyline lines, and plots were interesting, in charge of a ship and crew is one thing, but to basically be responsible for the alpha quadrant, and being the prophet can't be easy. In Next gen, Data was always my favorite character, but now I'm digressing.

Kirk is way better than Picard. The original Captain is always the best Captain, in my opinion.
Archer is my second favourite and I can't stand Janeway

I loved the lady as Mrs Columbo, but Janeway was a bore. No color, no class, nothing at all interesting about her. I actually hated this entire series. It was tedious to watch! I just couldn't stay in my seat, I had to keep getting up and looking for something else to keep me focused while the show was on the air. Usually, I'd reach for my knitting. I didn't like DS9 either, but at least I could watch it without having to have something to! ST:TNG was the BEST, after the original, of course. And I liked Enterprise. It got off to a slow start, but grew on me after a while.

Janeway a multitasker ? Sorry, but no. She was a bore . Period. She didn't have enough chutzpah to talk herself out out of even the dullest situation . James T. would have gotten his people back home, no matter what ! Jean Luc would have applied reason and logic , and the advice of his officers, and figured it out, as well...probably more quickly than James T . Sisko, would have been too busy messing about with those stupid Bjorans ! Lord, I hated that plotline ! Janeway, would have thought , and reflected , and thought about it some more , until she...and her crew were too old to care if they got home or not ! Archer? He may have figured it out ... but, it would have taken some effort...and a little help from T'Paul - I liked her.

You couldn't have been describing Janeway, here . As a Star Ship Captain, she just didn't cut it. It's a good thing she never had a run in with Q! He would've had her tied into will never have an equal. Picard got things done. He thought about the problem, applied logic and the sound advice of his officers, then did what needed doing. Sisko may have gotten around to it, if he could have gotten those Bjorans off of his back . Archer would have also figured it out, but Janeway? Sorry, but no, she would have been too busy thinking and reasoning and thinking some more. The lady was a bore.

Um... actually Janeway was probably the only Starfleet captain that Q even remotely respected. He used U.S.S. Voyager as the location for a Continuum tribunal to decide the fate of "Quinn", he asked Janeway to have a child with him, used her assistance in ending the Q civil war, Janeway was Q's son's godmother, and he left him with her when he needed disciplining - even going so far as to refer to Janeway as "Aunt Kathy".

Anyway. I vote for Picard. Kirk engaged in far too much "gunboat diplomacy" type crap, going so boldly against the Prime Directive. Sisko was far to one-dimensional as a character. He was more or less just "I kill you now, cuz I'm good at it!". Archer... I'd be a better captain than Archer.

So I go for Picard. If for only one line of his:

"Starfleet is not a military organization. Its purpose is exploration!"

(In other news, does anyone here play Star Trek Online?"
