Default Maxis hood numbers
Somewhere I've seen a list that showed the NUMBER for every Maxis hood; as, N001 is Pleasantview. Easy, but I can't find!
Stand up, speak out. Just not to me..

N001=Pleasantview
N002=Strangetown
N003=Veronaville
N004 --> = your 'hoods (you probably knew that already)

E001=Belladonna Cove (AL)
F001=Desiderata Valley (FT)
G001=Riverblossom Hills (SSN)
(not sure why these 3 are in the opposite order alphabetically compared to release, but eh...)

The http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Neighborhood site uses the same preview pics as the previews in the neighborhood folders, in case you ever wonder again.

You can see that in the folder neighbourhoods.
You can add or delete (custom) neighbourhoods by moving them in/out of that folder.

Edit: if you check inside the folder of each hood you can see the pictures and easily see which folder is which hood.
