Default night light leval
Can any one tell me if it's possible to and how to alter the darkness when the sky goes dark for night time. I need to brighten the nights up as i have started to struggle with the amount of darkness. Also i need to brighten it for when setting objects to sell them. you know the bit when you click and set to sell and before it goes yellow. Also if i manage to create/alter a file via SimPE will it work from the downloads folder instead of altering and overwriting an existing game file. Or does anyone know of a download that already exists??

The lights are managed by means of several text files located in the *game installation* folders: you can't create something to be put in the Downloads to alter the game lights.

Light management is quite intricate, because there are several elements that should be tweaked at the same time: there are several parameters to modify the "overall" night luminosity, and then you should tweak accordingly all the "light portals" (i.e. all the windows, glass doors and arches existing in game).

The Nightime parameters are in the file "Lighing.txt", located in (Program Files)\EA Games\The Sims 2\TSData\Res\Lights (open the file and search for the section "Nighttime"), while the numerous light portals are scattered through several other .txt and .nlo files, all located in the same Lights folder (or subfolders).

Let me say that it's quite a difficult mod to do: I myself don't know the meaning of many of the NightTime parameters; and tweaking the light portals accordingly to the overall night luminosity isn't a simple thing (the risk is that windows make the indoor space brighter then the outdoor, for example).

So far, only GunMod has managed (with a long trial-and-error job) to create a functional and balanced lighting mod (I mean the two Radiance mods, of course).

NOTE: since such a mod needs modifying a game file (the "Lighting.txt"), it will be not compatible with any other mod that provide a custom Lighting.txt, i.e. the Radiance itself and the custom light support provided by the Scriptorium.

I've finally started my Journal. Information only, no questions.

well i fiddled with the Lighing.txt file and had minimal success as you can see from the screenshots. I havent given up yet but as you said theres alot in those text files. Maybe this is going to be something that i may come back to sometime...

An another related source is probably the corresponding codes in the relevant material shaders maybe plus the lighting.packages.

Yet, I guess the text scripts should be sufficient. I'm unsure which way may be easier eventually.

added:

1. the lighting.package holds the light map for the neighbourhood. (the reference is at lighting.txt)

2. the pre-SS day settings are now the summer one.

3. There're totatlly 5 lighting states:
day (summer)
winter
spring
autumn
overcast

I think I have managed to make what the OP wanted (it is something I have wanted for a long time also, but didn't know where to look before seeing this thread).

I'm not sure if the Bon Voyage Lighting.txt is strictly necessary or not, but it doesn't seem to do any harm.

What do the files do? They make night time as bright as daytime, and that should be all that they do.

I hope people get some use out of them.

Feel free do do as you like with the files so long as you link to this post and do not upload to pay sites.

@radar or anyone else

Could you do a lighting-file, which makes the days as dark as the nights? I tried it myself, but it didn't work.

Hello everyone

I tried to modify the ligtingf.txt so that the days are as dark as the nights. But unfortunately I failed until now.
I tried a copy and past method. I copied the whole Nightime block and replaced the Daytime block with it. Doing this resulted in a neighbourhood flashing red (the overview, where you pick the houses). But on the lot itself the days look like nights, as I wanted them to do. Unfortunately the nights are complete black. I can’t see my Sims or any objects. Only the plumb bob is visible and active lights, although they aren’t very bright.
I changed nothing in the Nighttime block, therefore I don’t understand, way the nights are black.

I hope somebody can help me with my problem.

While copying & pasting, have you by chance replaced the first line "lightingState day" with "lightingState night"? This should prevent the game from finding the "night" section of the lighting.txt, thus causing the flashing result.

No, I didn't replace the first line.

But this flashing red problem only occurres, when I change the last line of the Daytime block. In the line “lightingState dayNoPortals : day”, I replaced day with night. At first I tried not to change this line, but in this case, none of my changes in the Daytime block seemed to have any effect. Although I replaced all values of the Daytime block with those of the Nighttime block, the lighting situation of the days didn’t change unless I changed the last line in the way described above.

At the moment I’m trying to modify an already modified lighting.txt and this seems to be more successful. Days and nights are both dark (although there are some minor differences, but they are little-noticed).
But the lithing.txt I used has enabled morning and evening stats. Now I have to find out how to disable those :lol
