Is there a way to change the default pattern that is displayed on a custom object or can you only change it game?

I've been looking for a way to do that too, and haven't found one yet that doesn't make me go cross eyed. One way is to use the Sims Resource Workshop though... you create a pattern and export it, then import that pattern on your object in the workshop. I haven't tried this myself, but theoretically it should work.

Yes you can. Tutorial here by cmomoney. It is for paintings but towards the end is where it explains changing default textures.
