I'm hyperventilating over the idea of reusing names. I can't do it. Can. Not. Do. It. Hang on. *breathes in and out of paper bag* Ok, ok. I'm feeling better now, thanks.

I only tried a legacy one time and my drunken gnat attention span kicked in and I wandered off about the third or fourth generation. Trying to remember what I called them. Ok, I had to go look. The founder's name was, get this, Dinah Stee. Captain Dork, at your service. I named them based on what generation they were: I did a lot of research to see what names would fit and had written down possibilities for each gen. I have no idea where that list is, but here's what I remember.

Legacy:
Founder: Dinah Stee (I have an unfortunate proclivity for naming by pun. It's sad, it is.)
2nd gen: Twyla (kinda looks like two)
3rd gen: Tertia and Trey
This would be where I lost interest and now I don't remember any 4th, 6th, 9th, or 10th gen names. I'm sure that's a real shame.
5th gen: Quincy, Quentin
7th gen: Seven (heh)
8th gen: Otto, Octavian(a)

General population:
My very favoritest sad pun name was Helena Troy. Really, I just can't help myself.

My poor little sim who never gets played and basically lives on the lot where I build temporary sets is named Grace Host. (See? It's really bad.)

My all-time favorite sim is Sabine Harris, named after my home town and my mom's family name. Her hubby is Jackson and their son is Anton.

My favorite family's names are:
Mom: Lisette Adam (ah-DAHM: After my friend's Belgian ex. I just liked the name.)
Dad: Tarik Jones
Son: Adam Jones (but this Adam is pronounced the usual Americano way.)

Then there's:
  • Cal & Ava McPherson and their daughter Shasta. (They are nature lovers and named her after the mountain.)
  • Alicia (a-LEES-ee-a) Delgado and her brother, whatshisname, Marco? Mario? Sam?
  • Susannah somethingorother: don't like her very much and never play her. She's a scene filler.
  • Cheyne O'Malley: current fave
  • Mav Hayes: brand new, not even in game yet
Usually, I create the sim first and then let them "tell" me their name. Ya know, something that suits them. I do try to avoid names of people I know. I name my pets by the same method. Maybe slightly nutty, but it works for me. Just ask Milo, Jasper, and Stanley. :D

At the moment, I'm only playing one lot, but it has two families living on it.

George & Nadia Westfield have a son named Julian.
Rufus & Coral Montgomery have a daughter named Gracie.

Julian & Gracie are teens and dating. They'll be married as soon as they become adults.

Currently played Sims in Snobville (yes I know, not terribly creative, but the two families are incredibly rich.) are:

Lion - In order from oldest to youngest
Michael
Marissa
Camryne (Female, Currently at University)
Laelia (Female, twin of Lucius, child)
Lucius (Male, child)
Keegan (Male, child)
Tiernan (Male, toddler)
Hestia (Female, baby)

Callaghan - In order from oldest to youngest
Ciara (Female)
Camlin (Male)
Condon (Male, Twin of Bram, child)
Bram (Male, child)
Adalardo (Male, child)
Dagda (Male, toddler)
Another one on the way.

The goal with these two families is to single handedly populate the neighborhood, though I will introduce one or two more families as things progress. Don't want them to get too inbred.

I've tended to stick with a Roman/Celtic name theme in this neighborhood using mythology books, my own memory and Celtic/Roman baby name lists. Other names I have used are from people I actually know (Liam, Raiscara), names from my own stories (Genessa, Cian) and your basics (Michael, Susie, Tom, Peter etc).

Quick question...what is this "Legacy" I keep hearing people mention?

I always decide on the look or ethnicity of the sims which last name they have. I have sims of many ethnicitys in my game:

Amèlie Delacroix, a French girl
Leon, Linda, Lars & Lisa, Lukas Buchholz, a German family
Aryana and Jason Woods, both North American with African heritage
Deniz Sahin from Turkey and her daughters Selin, Nilay and Sule
Li Mei from China
Dina Berkovitch who has Jewish ancestors
Anne Becker from Austria
Sven Bergström from Sweden
Niamh and Fionn O'Sullivan from Ireland with their children Liadan, Sean and Íde

and so on. There are some sites for names, first and last, which are a great help once I decided which nationality my sim should have. There aren't any names I really prefer, I just try to have a great variety.

I have hardly any Sims in my game,
because i only play when i feel like it.

But i have the Fraudy family at the moment,
and the mum would like 10 Children.
I locked it, and this is their family:

Kevin - Father
Kim - Mother

Fred - Boy Twin
Daphne - Girl Twin
Peter - Brother
Nick - Brother
Donna - Sister.

And i plan to populate them, with MUCH help of the maxMotives cheat,
once the Twins move out, i'll start baby-making again.

I suck so bad at naming sims, seriously I do. So far the only semi-creative names that I've come up with, that I really like would be Lilith Taylor and her brother Tripp.

Sounds like the Bean family I used to have in Sims 1. Basically they were my take on the Real World except my ultimate goal (never achieved BTW) was to have every male sim hook up with every female sim with as little damage to their other relationships as possible.

The all J name concept came from the old Sesame Street song by I want to say How Now Brown and the Moo Crowd. "J. Joe Jeans and His Jelly Beans."

The eight Bean family members we're Jay, Jo, Jean, Jim, Jason, Julie, Jamal and Jamika. Initially Jay would pair off with Jo. Jean with Jim. Jason with Julie. And Jamal with Jamika as they were the black couple in the house. The other six would be white. Although if I made them in Sims 2, the other six would likely be more racially mixed. Tried to keep Sim creation simple in Sims 1. Never got all the hookups done but was always fun trying. Haven't done them much in Sims 2 though because aging off and cash cheating hasn't been as much fun this time around.

My newest legacy family's last name is "Zombie." And for every first name I use an action or description word that would fit in front of Zombie to make it a bit funny.
Right now there is Falling, Limping and Ura Zombie.

I tend to never use the same name more than twice in my neighborhood for my other simmies.

I do love giving my sims weird, quirky, or messed up names! In one incarnation of my game, I have a sim named Sal Monella. I've got names like Ralph Bombers, Roy Device... Also, I take names from the news. I was watching the weather channel, and there was this lady named Angela Deputy. Was watching a show about cold case murders and there was this lady named Ro Morse. No lie. When her named showed up on the screen, I was a little confused at first. Then it became almost comical to watch people struggle to not say REmorse!

For my new neighborhood in a pretty much clean game, I'm going with more normal names. My farmer family consists of Blaise and Appolonia (and their twin boys whose names I can't remember right now) Diamond. I had to refrain from naming one son Rich

I do something different for each family... I like making it seem like they named the kids themselves instead of me. Makes each family a little more individual, they all have something different going on.

With my Dawson family I'm using a D and T theme... all males have D names, all females have T names. So far we've got Drake, Tanis, Damon, Terri, Drew and Tyler. When one of my Stanford men got alien pregnant, he named his daughter Xandria after his husband Alex (if she'd been a boy she would've been Xander). My Kohelet family is all Asian (aside from the fact that Kohelet isn't an Asian name) so their children all have Asian names, and when my transvestite serial killer has the Grim baby I'm planning on him having, I'm sure he'll give him a girl's name, because he's just like that. (He WILL have a boy, even if I have to retry 100 times.)

My source for names differs quite a bit from family to family, but my current favorite family names are the Fey family (admittedly, I did drop the ball on the surname): Father Io, mother Tethys, teenage daughter Europa, teenage son Arcturus, and newly-grown male child Castor. They're all named after stars or moons, which I look up in an astrological atlas I've had since elementary school.

Mythology is always a nice place, too, for me to pick out names; with Norse mythology, you not only get one name, but you get names for generations back and forward. Right now I have the Liesmith family, with Loki, Sigyn, Vali and Narvi. Should Loki feel the need to have more children, there's always a giantess sim waiting to be introduced to give him his last three children (Hel, Jormungand, Fenrir).
