Ugh... Were not allowed to change our desktops either... Its this stupid 'Mural' that they've made in paint. It says 'Summer's coming'... summer is well over.

We can change the desktops, however they will be automatically deleted when we log off or close the computer.

That's either because they don't know how to do roaming profiles, or because they are trying to keep the profile small. I'll guess at the latter; also if you allow the desktop to be changed it means that students can save files there, which means that they most likely won't be backed up. Also, certain students will sit there downloading pretty wallpapers instead of doing their work!

I haven't really tried to search for any blocked sites yet because the rules at my school are pretty strict. The one kid in my business class had his account locked by the administrator for a week because he was looking at pictures of cars on Google. I know for sure though that most game sites are blocked because it slows down the computers.

I'd like to know what kind of old computers your school is using that a website slows the computer down.

Sounds like they've sure clamped things down better since I've left high school. When I was about 16 they only just started getting computers for public use at my school, with *gasp shock* the internet on it! And they did such a shoddy job of locking those computers down that the students constantly outsmarted the administration. Circumventing their lockout system was the easiest thing to do since it would crash if you loaded a site heavy in javascript All you had to do after that was go into the Configuration Screen and uninstall it! Students were installing keyloggers on the other computers and taking other student's email adresses and such.

I remember when they got a few of my friends to start installing some new computers on the top floor because they were tired of the problems. Although I do believe my friends helped the school administration (knowing one of the friends working on it atleast), they also spent a lot of time playing Quake on LAN

It's not the computers, it's more that we have a constant build up of cookies and other temporary internet files (We have 1000+ kids) that aren't dumped until later that night when the servers go through their nightly routines.

Wow, that's incredible. I suppose if he was doing that when he should have been working, it's understandable, but the punishment seems a bit excessive. After that story, we're going to have to start looking over our shoulders a bit more often when we Google photos of Patrick Dempsey and Jensen Ackles during newspaper .

About the desktop backgrounds... my school system has a list of what you shouldn't do on a computer instead of a photo. The list includes looking at pornography, social networking, gaming, taking the balls out of computer mice (happens ALL the time), instant messaging, drinking, eating, checking email, and just about anything else you can think of.

Do I dare disturb the universe?

It's incredible how things change - I finished high school (years 7-12 here) six years ago, and I don't think that anything was blocked. I can remember our Human Health teacher searching for pictures of STDs because she'd misplaced her class notes *boggle* Plus, we only had two computer rooms (of about 20-25 computers) for a school of about 1000 kids.

Mind you, I think that our 'IT' guy (actually just one of the teachers) spent more time sneaking off school grounds to smoke certain illicit substances than he did maintaining the computer network

Ha ha. It probably was a bit excessive, but at least he does his work ... somewhat. And people taking the balls out of the mice is annoying. People can be so stupid sometimes, some people have even shoved food in the CD drives before. Seriously, what's the point of doing that?!

I graduated from high school 7 years ago and we didn't have too many things blocked. I know for a fact that we could check our e-mail, because that's what we spent most of our free time doing... e-mailing each other back and forth even though we were sitting right next to or across from each other LOL

We can barely even look at pictures at my school. The google picture feature is blocked. We have 15 computer labs + the media center and at least one computer in every classroom (mainly only the teachers computer, but some have extras), so sometimes even with the fastest internet they can get, if all of those labs are full (or even 75%) it can make the internet wayyy slow. We have over 2500 kids in my school, so I'm pretty sure thats why they block 90% of the internet. Seriously though, how harmful is pictures of pianos that you need for a school assignment? haha

Also, we can save files but we can't change our desktops--well we can but like someone else said, they will be deleted when we log off.

The filter at my school is "opt-out," I think, so anything in the unsorted category (including sites that would be helpful for research - anything that administrators haven't actively allowed) is inaccessible. I really don't care enough to try to outsmart it. We're only ever given access to the computers when there's some paper or project we need them for, so I'd rather do the research or the work than waste time.

It really doesn't matter to me, though, because the usernames of publications students such has myself have certain restrictions lifted. We do all of our business through Gmail and sometimes need to look at pop culture/public venue websites to get certain information, so I could get on MTS2 if I wanted to.
I'm impressed that they take that stuff so seriously at your school. The school districts I've been in have either been oblivious or too... bureaucratic, I guess, to give special privileges to clubs/classes that would use them.

When I was network technician at a school, I made darned sure that MTS2, S2C, MATY, INSIM and all other sites I could think of were banned. School is for learning, not socialising. I also monitored all web traffic on the network so that anyone using a proxy site to get around our filter proxy would be detected. And BANNINATED permanently from the internet! Muhahahahaha!

exackly! call me old fashioned but uhm,.....can't that be done after school? sorry guys.....when I gratuated High school in 1991 I hardly remember the computers..lol....it was an elective course I think....

I hate the school blocks, they're just really annoying, especially since our school computers like to block Google (and many other useful sites)! Deviantart is also blocked at our school, which really peeved me last year. I would get all of my stock images for my computer graphics class there.

Gaming sites, I can understand, but it would really suck if you didn't have computer access at home and didn't have anywhere else you could go for it. Considering the current economy, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a sizable chunk of students out there in that position.

Yeah, but school is for learning, not for recreation. Those kids can always go to the public library, right?

#42 Old 12th Nov 2008 at 3:53 AM
As technologically tethered as my school is, I think the restrictions we have are fair. No YouTube, no social networking, no porn, no chat rooms, no games. No games sites are blocked, however. There are I think somewhere close to 600 computers in my school. I'm sitting in front of one for an hour and a half every other day, either moving the keyboard to finish my math homework or writing my novel. They aren't overly protective about our internet access, and every teacher with more than five computers in their classroom and in all of the labs have software on their computers that allow them to see what every other computer is doing, so the teachers themselves moderate and keep kids in line.

Yeah but what's the point of getting on MTS2, MATY, etc. at school if the only reason you go there (not saying that's the only reason everyone goes there, obviously) is to download content for your Sims game, which isn't on the school computer...

I never tried at school to get on MTS2 but I think its possible, because we also have MSN on the computers and I also can get on a horse forum. We can also get on Youtube, Hyves (the dutch facebook ) and other sites like that. I think the blocked nothing.

heey... yeah, my school blocks mts and such. We can't change our backgrounds... at my old school you could, our best themes involved candy
But for those of you who are desperated to go on facebook at school, go to www.Quizlet.com and sign up. most schools don't block it, cause it's a studying site, flashcards and that. Then, when you go home, go into quizlet and click on the "connect to facebook option." I foget the rest, but it works!
you have to conect at home, schools (mine anyway) dont let you do it at school.
The next day, go onto quizlet and click on the little picture of your profile pic (facebook) or something. Then, message away! Lol.
Also you can im with other quizlet members if you create a new social group. You can make a private chat room by making a group with a secret password.
I'm lexie_elder_123 by the way, if you simmer people ever want to talk. :P

I'm diffrent. Is that going to be a problem?

My work blocks www.modthesims2.com, but it doesn't block www.modthesims.info :P
You could also try to get to the site using the IP adress instead of the name. If it is a name blocker, you might get around it using an IP.

I remember having a computer class when I was 12. We learned the basics on DOS. It was really stupid, but also really easy. Later when I was 16 they had this computerroom at my school, but I never went there. I think that in the years after I graduated they really started to implement computers in the lessons.
