Hi Im a little confused as to how to add glass doors to an armoire or kitchen cabinet, that type of thing. My brains are on holiday at the moment lol. I usually use the mesh tool to assign bones so Im not familiar with other ways as I use 3ds max but Im not familiar with how to assign bones with the SMD thing in 3ds max. I usually put my objects through milkshape to get the obj file I need for the mesh tool but never added a new subset as well. How would I go about adding a new subset for glass and assigning bones for the new glass in the mesh tool? Does anyone know which is the best armoire to clone for this purpose? Is there an easier way? Many thanks Mummysim |

Err, what exactly do you want to do, only add a glass texture or replace parts of the object-mesh with an additional subset which shows glass (so if I (English-struggeling :D) understand you correctly you know how to show glass texture but not how to assign bones to a new subset, which you don't know how to add either, right???)? Some hopefully helpful to your questions- answers: Glass texture is displayed in the TXMT so the easiest way: open an original Maxis clone (= no changes yet) which uses glass-texture and compare the entries in the TXMT glass-subset with yours (the values, parameters and the referring files) IgnorantBliss wrote a great tutorial about adding subsets - now you confused me about the bones so dunno about that (I thought they would stay belonging the the armore-part - happens for me with my mesh changes so far - though doors are seperated now, if doors aren't already by Maxis seperated subsets, never cloned an amoire yet... isn't there a 'create an amoire-tutorial' available, too? :D)Choose one which fits the behaviour and size best (animation, how the doors are opened/closed and 1 or 2 tiles) of the mesh you want to create

Yes, I am serious though I'm not serious at all. I'm serious about this! Even the joker can be deadly serious... Wichtig ist, was hinten raus kommt!

Thanks for your reply. Yes I can add a new subset thanks to Ignorant Bliss (works wonders here) I can make glass I have cloned the small asian armoire which comes with models, main armoire, two doors and chrome handles, one left, one right and one on the main but separate plus the clothes etc. ok now I have glass too, this mesh is stuck in max at the moment as Im not sure where to go from here. I need to add a new subset for the glass in the doors in simpe, but not sure how to go about it so that its part of the door and keeps the bone assignments so that it opens with the door. I cant seem to find any bones in the groups in SimPE with this clone so Im even more confused as to how the glass gets in the doors and opens ok. I havent used any other method of assigning bones other than the mesh tool. Im not familiar with milkshape nor the SMD for max nor SimPE (not yet anyway) lol. So any help or pointers would be very useful. Thanks again |

*still confused* I think you are trying much too complicated - why don't you just keep the doors (changed to fit the glass mesh/subset) as they are, add the glass and export it to your mapping prog (or however else you locate the textures on the correct mesh-area), save the mapping and export the finished mapping to Milkshape (didn't try finishing in 3DS and immediately importing to Sime yet and didn't work with the mesh tool so far but your changes can be done only in the 3d-editor and UVmapping prog) to export all the subsets together to the tslocator_gmdc.obj which has to be reimported into SimPE (replace every subset is ok, check if the new subset is added to bounded mesh (marked?!) and import. Then perform the steps to get the package know the new subset and try it out if bounds are mixed up (still don't expect this). Err, you say you aren't familiar with SimPE but you can do make glass/ perform the required steps in the TXMT for the glass and the changes from IB's tutorial? So just do it and check it out :D I mean changing the target slots (even container/routing, depending on your changes) would only be necessary if your clone doesn't fit the running animation anymore at all but it seems to me that you want to start at the end; try if the joints in the GMDC preview are correctly located, usually they shouldn't change even if you delete substs as long as you don't change the SLOT or CRES *confused*, maybe I misunderstood you at all?! |
