In order to better solve your problem, please go through the following as listed below:
  • General - Do the Game Problem FAQ
You appear to have not gone through our main Game Help:Game Problemwiki FAQ. Please go through and do the steps on this FAQ, including any others that it links to (for example the Game Help:Game Problem-Problem Custom Contentwiki FAQ).

Usually, in the vast majority of cases, actually going through and doing the steps (doing, not just reading) fixes issues - sometimes you may be asked to remove custom content, or to patch - please rest assured that all of our FAQs have been tested by our staff and volunteers and we wouldn't suggest you do something unless it's been known to fix particular issues.

On occasion you might be asked to do a long FAQ - please make sure you do all the steps and don't just skip over them. You'll often find that these long FAQs have all the details you need. If nothing in the above FAQs fixes your problem you may post again detailing exactly which you have done and which steps failed.

ok i've done all those steps previous to posting here.

Installed, reinstalled game, updated drivers, updated Sims 2 and my expansion packs. I've tried setting to compatibility modes to with no luck.

My game freezes after the initial loading preview screen and crashes back to desktop with a white box and a large X in it, no writing or error message just a large X.

I'm not sure what has happened

What about testing with fresh user files?

Well i've completely removed Sims 2 from my pc and reinstalled and tested each game after installation and i've found that it works untill i come to playing Open for business or Pets. So i think maybe one of them could be corrupt.

Oh and yes my graphics card is the NVidia Geforce 8400

That doesn't answer the question - have you cut and paste your My Docs/The Sims 2 folder to your desktop, and run the game (with an EP installed that usually crashes)?

Do any errors show up in your system event log? I'm wondering if this is an issue with a service or process on your PC, or something.
(Thanks Gareth!)

Hmm, odd. Usually I'd associate this kind of crash with corrupted cache files...
Have you tried updating your graphics drivers?

Is that what you copied from the log file? You may get a more user friendly log if you look through the event viewer- usually you will get more detail of what the error was and a link for more details.

Ahh, now we're getting somewhere. I've seen that error before- "A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process X"- that seems to be that the process is attempting to stop (via disabling the DWM) the aero interface. Usually the advice would be to try another video driver, but since you've tried that then i guess a good thing to try would be to disable the Aero theme before running the game. Set it to Windows Classic or something- perhaps it's using too much 'oomph' for the graphics chip to render Aero and the Sims 2 at once!

I've changed it to Windows classic and it's still crashing to desktop. Is there anything else it could be?

Make sure you have closed all unnecessary tasks down- such as antivirus software, messenger, widgets etc.

Where did you download the latest video drivers from? If you downloaded from Packard Bell, they're not up to date. The newest drivers are dated June 23rd, just last month.

Here they are: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winvis...75.19_whql.html

I don't know if this is going to work or not.. but try this -> right click the Sims2EP4.exe file Program Files\EA Games\The Sims 2 Pets\TSBIN -> properties -> compatibility tab -> disable desktop composition

Have you patched your games? You should have installed 4 separate patches.

Can you screencap your running processes you've left, as found in task manager? Maybe you've missed some.

Try shutting down the two Roxio processes before launching the game- I've seen Sonic software conflict with the piracy protection before now.
