Have you given up anything for lent?

I've given up text speak (and the use of "lol.")

I've never used it in texts, but now my instant messaging will be proper speech, too!

Have you given up anything interesting for lent? (this year or any others!) and have you stuck to it?

I am trying to stick to not saying "Oh My God", for lots of reasons; I *will* stick to it.. Honestly!
Its more about breaking out of the Habit, and finding an alternative

I'm not a Christian, but 'was' and like the challenge.

I think I've desided to give up on 'after dinner' snacks.
Today is the only exeption, my grandma made Portugeese donuts :D
My only reason of picking that is to possibly help nudge closer to my (small) weight loss goal.

Last year and the year before I gave up red meat (making me semi-vegetarian for 40 days). I sucessfully pulled it off both times and completely became semi-veg. :D

So long, my luckless romance
My back is turned on you
I should've known you'd bring me heartache

I seriously only heard about "lent" this year and what I think is that's the most pointless thing ever, so basically your suposed to give up something you liek doing? no way

slipknot93, the point is to get limit something that detracts from what's really important in our lives. Whether it be to better the communication with God, people around you, or yourself. It's kinda like fasting from whatever you choose.

I'm giving up french fries. Junk food has become too much of a norm for me (and I eat fries everyday now at school. Not healthy mind or body). I really plan on sticking to it but sometimes I forget Not this year.

Hmm. . .

Well, I am going to give up sloppiness. My locker is a sty, and I found what I think is a brown vanilla pudding behind my Society and History book. It is very distracting to find something in your locker that you can't remember putting in.

I am going to give up eating so little. I had a small bucket of chips (those small packets of chips that say "hot chips", some of you may know what I am talking about.) and I was full for the rest of the day, and at camp, I would eat a small piece of meat and a potato. It isn't healthy, and it has become too normal, so I am going to eat more. :P

This allows me to see into the minds of people! That's right, I can actually see what they're thinking!
So long as what they're thinking is exactly what I think they're thinking.

I have a friend whose little brothers (they're fifteen and twelve) have been giving up beer ever since they were old enough to understand the concept of Lent. It's not that they actually drink beer- they just don't see that Lent is giving up something important to you . They tried to give up homework once, but that didn't fly.

Do I dare disturb the universe?

I gave up religion for Lent once, and never went back.

No, that's not a troll post. Religion, with it's constant hatred of anything different, detracts from my life's goal, which is happiness.

I will try and stop smoking, I really need to. I will also try and stop being rude to people who cross my path(meaning"walking in a shop or eating out.ect)
Im really rude when my mood hits the bottom.
But i will try this year to be smoke free and friendly to everybody.
Q. Who came up with Lent?

What the heck is "lent"? That sounds like the dryer stuff but spelled differently.

Copy and pasted from Wikipedia, because it explains stuff better than I can:

Lent, in some Christian denominations, is the forty-day-long liturgical season of fasting and prayer before Easter. The forty days represent the time Jesus spent in the desert, where according to the Bible he endured temptation by Satan. Different churches calculate the forty days differently.

The purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer—through prayer, penitence, almsgiving and self-denial—for the annual commemoration during Holy Week of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus, which recalls the events linked to the Passion of Christ and culminates in Easter, the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ.

So a lot of people give up something they like for lent (Booze, chocolate etc) as a form of fasting/penance/whatever you wanna call it.

Slipknot93, it isn't pointless for Christians. It's a sacrfice, to cleanse oneself.
I am giving up television except for American Idol. And I am also giving up sweets, I do that every year.

And good job Pux - 80's I could never give up red meat! :p
