Has anybody played this game before?

This is by far my favourite game ever, I could praise it for months upon months, it's a shame I don't have time right now.

Everything about it, from the detailed and touching character interaction, to the atmospheric and intuitive gameplay are astounding.
I've played this so much, it's hard to put it down, especially with 200 hours of gameplay. (Without all the optional stuff done.

Aye, bought it when it first came out. Played as a ranger, I think, then lost my savegame due to some sort of computer thing just as I was about to finish up Chapter 2 (with all sidequests done). Have played it a few times since then, currently have it installed on my hard drive with a game (playing a wizard) going in Chapter 2 again. Great game, though not my most favorite of the Infinity Engine games (that'd be Planescape: Torment).

Chapter 2 has an immense amount of replay value, chapter 3 is just hardcore though.
Also, I've never played Planescape, maybe I should consider it.

You should. It's a bit more linear (and you're more restricted in what the main character can be) but the story is excellent.

I'll try and find it when term ends, unfortunately I'm such a Baldur's gate II fanboy, it probably won't be my favourite game ever. (Maybe second though, who knows)

Baldur's Gate one changed my late-childhood. It's one of my favorite games ever. Baldur's Gate two is different, but also brilliant. I like them because they aren't all "kill, kill, kill, kill, kill", like Diablo, or Icewind Dale.

Kinda sucks that female characters can only have a romantic story with Anomen, but well, the game is great. I haven't played many other rpg's, though. My tastes advanced more towards science fiction and not fantasy, but they still have an important place in my heart.

I am a Diablo II fan as well, although I don't understand how it will be timeless, once all the builds are played to death, and the online community slowly diminishes it has nothing.

Baldur's gate is different, it's story is unforgettable, and teenagers are picking it up from their parents/Older siblings, and enjoying it, that's why I think it is a timeless classic, It will only truly die when technology replaces beautiful storytelling.

Oh agreed Nissun, Anomen as only choice. Yech. And I dislike paladins too (which made me really unhappy about Casavir in NWN2, aside from the shallowness of that romance plot).

I love western rpgs, whether they be fantasy or sci-fi (love jrpgs too) and I try to play every decent one that comes out. I'm a sucker for a good story, especially if there's also lots of sidequests.

Great game. Good story and I enjoy the party vs party combat.

However, there were some elements of the game which I felt was done better in BG1. First in the BG1 I would send Imoen to steal potions but there was a chance she might encounter a guard. In BG2 I could steal anything and not worry about it.

Secondly, the game leveled the characters too fast and too many powerful loot. So fast that they had to bend the rules for ToB.

I hope developers revisit this style of game. There are just too many FPS style game out there. I have not played Mass Effect but I did not like Knights Of Old Republic.

I see how those could be issues, but they didn't bother me.

The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the coolest characters where all heavily placed on the alignment scale, which meant it was hard to integrate them without being completely evil, or a complete goody two shoes.

I played it through about a dozen times.

I don't know if it's my all-time favourite game though. I like Fallout 2 slightly more, and Planescape: Torment is at least as good as well.

And since I'm listing awesome old RPGs, Arcanum comes in 4 place for sure on my list. ^^

@Kinneer - I liked Mass Effect a lot. On PC it's quite buggy sadly enough, but it's much better than KotOR for sure.

Mass Effect was a lot of fun. I played it through in a non-stop three day or so sitting at my brother's place when it had just come out on the 360 and I was visiting for the vacation period (I don't have a 360). I beat it before he did, hehehe. I don't mind the combat, it's a nice change of pace from faux-turn based. I was a bit disappointed in the sidequests and especially the planets themselves being way too similar. Kotor, I thought, was good fun as well. Certainly not my favorite, but fun.

I also enjoyed NWN2, yes even the Original Campaign, though it's not great and grand it was a fun little romp through a fantasy world. And Mask of the Betrayer is excellent if you ask me, had a lot of fun with that.

And ofcourse I enjoyed Arcanum. I remember getting that when it just came out. There should be more steampunk games, seriously. It also makes me sad Troika is no more

But, on topic, yeah. Character alignment could be an issue in BG2, I think they almost all slanted towards good or evil with very few neutral characters. Coupled with the fact that most evil and good characters don't get along very well and it's a disaster waiting to happen. And really, even if you have a good party, one should, atleast once, put Edwin in your party because he's awesome.

Yeah, the problem is that Edwin and Minsc are the two best characters, and you can't put them together. : - (

I though you can? There is a chance that they might come to a blow but it does not always happens. Minsc and Edwin has some great dialog after Edwin's accident.

I've got them both in my party at the moment and they haven't blown up at eachother yet. But I don't know for sure whether they will always come to blows or only sometimes.

Reading this topic just caused several Minsc quotes to run through my mind.

"Magic is impressive. But now Minsc leads! SWORDS FOR EVERYONE!"

(I'm still pissed that Dynaheir was killed off though.)

I tried Baldur II SOA tonight. And I chose to uninstal it half way through the tutorial.

I should have known. I hate AD&D. I love Diablo II so much I was hoping it would be a little more like that, with the simple running around killing and collecting and leveling up, rather than all the complexity of AD&D rules. Just setting up a character was too tedious a process. For what it's worth, I did the same with Neverwind Nights -- got frustrated and removed it after the tutorial.

I'm very bored right now and could use a new game, but I'm old and picky.

Take a look at Titan's Quest which is perhaps the best Diablo clone on the market although it is worth noting the best Diablo style game to play is still Diablo II... at least until Diablo III arrives.

BG2 IS the bestest game from the decay of Inflaton to nowadays... and unfortunately, even if NWN is developed in 3 dimensions, the story and most of all, the relationships among characters, are nothing compared to BG2. If someone has to suggest a comparable rpg (not like Diablo, that has nothing to do with an rpg) I would be immensely grateful!

Finally, my new gpu!!!!!!!!!!! Have a look at the bathrobe if you don't mind to become envious! :-P

Presidente, thanks for the recommendation for Titan. I'll give that one a shot next.

I started playing Microsoft's old 2003's Freelancer last night. I saw a reference on Wikipedia to nonlinear games that mentioned it. It's comprehensible but not exactly fascinating so far. Titan will be next.

I got re-turned-on to Diablo II a while back after reading the thread about old favorites and reloaded it back on my computer and have been playing it for weeks now. It's still a fantastic game, although the graphics are a little musty. And it runs a lot smoother on my computer than I remember it doing in the good ol' Win98 days.
