Garron woke up early that morning, vengeful. He checked to see that his parents weren't awake, and then began to throw clothes and toys into his backpack. May as well, they don't care what I think, may as well just pack... His thoughts were interrupted as he heard the door open behind him.



"Garron? What's going on, hon?" It was his mom, Lillith, rubbing sleep from her eyes.
"We're moving, right? You didn't want to tell me about it, but I know. Jeez, Mom, the least you could have done was tell me..." Garron was horrified to find himself close to tears. She knelt next to him, hugged him. "Garron, I'm sorry. We only decided last night, honey, we were going to tell you this morning."



She dried his eyes. That was what Garron loved most about his mother, her tenderness. Well, that was when she wasn't working or sleeping.
"We're going to go out to breakfast, okay? You, me, and your dad. And we're going to talk this move over. Come on, get dressed. We'll be waiting."
Garron wiped his face and obeyed as she left the room.



At the resteraunt, Garron ordered an omelette, the cheapest thing on the menu. His parents did too, and they all acted enthusiastic about their food. Garron had wanted pancakes, but why strain the budget even further?
"Okay, kid, here's what your mom and I decided." said Garron's father, Dirk. "We want to move to another town. There's an opening for a teacher's aide there that I've been offered, and it could turn into a full on teaching job. And we'll be away from your grandparents, which will be good for all of us."



Garron sighed, pushed at the remains of his eggs. They looked nasty.
"But," his mother continued where his father left off, "It's not set in stone yet. We're still looking for a house, and we don't want to make such a big decision without you." Her voice softened as she said, "We know we haven't always been there for you, honey. And we want to change that. But if we move, we might not be around for a little while longer."

"So...I get to decide?" Garron asked, incredulous. His parents nodded, and his dad added, "Well, you get a say in it. We're going to decide this as a family. Okay?" Garron gave a weak little grin. He was overcome for a moment, then recovered himself.
"Do I have to choose right now?" He asked. Lillith laughed.
"No, hon, we've got some time. Think about it, okay? We don't want to rush into anything."

I'll probabaly have mine up tonight, I've got 2 days off after tonight ^.^.

You know how people say "sleep on it"? Well... I slept on it. The next morning I was calmer, and thought that if they really wanted to move again, it meant that it was important. And Mom crying meant it was really really important. My parents are not the stupid type... well at least they're the less stupid I've ever seen. They wouldn't want to move if it wasn't for a good cause. I only wished they would be honest with me and explain to me why we had been living like migratory birds our whole lives. Well at least my whole life. Always aiming for the sun and always being deceived by winter. Thus, I wanted to prove to them that I was a big girl and that I could understand, so I started packing.


I had become a professionnal at folding clothes neatly and fixing up my suitcases in an organized way. I had gone through half my stuff when I felt a lump in my throat and decided to rest for a few minutes. I had started day-dreaming on my bed when I heard my parents walk in the room. I got up and looked at them. They looked quite surprised. Yeah, they didn't know I had heard them.
"I'm almost done! I still have some clothes to put away. But Daddy, I don't want to leave Pokey behind like we did with my teddy bear last year! Can't I take him? Please? I'll find some room for him I promise!"
They both looked at me with an affectionate expression on their faces


"Oh Lindsay... Come on, leave everything now, we're taking you to eat your favorite meal in the whole world.", Daddy said.
"We're going to Roadster???"
"Yes we are!", answered Mom
"To eat pancakes??????"
"Yes my darling, come on let's go!"
I screamed with delight. Roadster's diner had the best pancakes in the entire universe!


The smell of my chocolate pancakes soothed me for a while.
"Honey, we figured you know about us moving again..."
I didn't answer, just waited for explanations.
"Look... we think you've grown, and now there are things we can tell you that we couldn't before. You were too young to understand..."
"It's Mr. Romano isn't it? He has something to do with Daddy, doesn't he?"
"Don't call him Mr. Romano... he doesn't deserve any respect from anyone. Especially not you.", Dad mumbled.


Mom put her hand on his and continued.
"Yes honey... he's a very very bad man, and has been very very mean to your dad. And we just want nothing to do with him, that's why we keep moving when he finds out where we are."
"But can't you call the police?"
"It's a little more complicated than that Lindsay, darling", said my dad, trying to smile, but his tone was full of sorrow.
"So we have to keep running away from him? But that means we can never decide of anything!"


"Well, we think we can... Lindsay, we don't want to scare you, but this man can harm us. But if you really want to stay here, maybe we could try to work something out."
"You're actually asking for my opinion?"
"Yes Lindsay. Even if you thought it didn't mean anything to us, your thoughts matter to us very much. And we've acted until now for your best interest, have no doubt about that. We just think you're big enough now to tell us what you have on your mind."
That's all I needed to know. That they cared about my feelings: "Whatever you think is best... but I'm sad of leaving. I am happy here..."I knew hearing this from me hurt them. But it was the truth.

I sat down in my room and glared at the door, waiting for my stupid parents to walk in. Everything was packed up, and I was ready to go. I heard them walk up the stairs, and I started to shake. No repeat performances, idiot, I told myself, blinking back the tears in my eyes. “Mae?” My mother stuck her head into my room and opened her mouth as if to say something, but stopped. Good. Now she knew what I felt like.




“...Mae? What is all of this?” She asked quietly, almost like she was trying not to cry. Good for her.
“Well, let’s get going. We’re moving again, aren’t we?” Even I could feel the holes I was burning into her with my stare. “Feels pretty good to know you’ve screwed me over once again, huh, mom?”
And then, before I could put in another word, she started to laugh. SHE STARTED TO LAUGH!




My dad must have heard her, because within moments, he was in my room, laughing it up as well. “I hate you both!” I screamed at them. “It’s real hilarious that your daughter’s life is over, right?! HAHA!” They tried to restrain their laughter.
“Mae, it’s just...” my mom started to say.
“Mae, go get dressed. We’re going to the diner,” my dad finished for her, acting a bit more serious now.




We had pancakes at the diner, and in between bites my parents tried to “explain the situation” to me like “mature adults.”
“Mae, you have to understand that we have no control over this. We’ve been a little...well, low on funds lately, and your grandmother has hooked me up with a really great job,” my dad said.
“Why couldn’t she get you a job here?” I snarled.
“Kid, it’s not that simple.”




“Look, Mae, it’s not all bad. The neighborhood there has tons of other families with kids your age. We went to check it out last month and I KNOW you’ll love it,” my mom said.
“Gimme a break. The other kids will probably just be a bunch of prissie girly-girls like the last time we moved. I’m happy HERE! PLEASE,” I pleaded.
My parents exchanged glances and sighed.




“What if we let YOU decide when to move?” my mom asked. My dad started to protest but she stopped him.
“Fine,” I said. They let out relieved sighs. “Never.”
“Mae!” my dad yelled. “You’re really being difficult! We’re trying to compromise here, but you’re acting like a spoiled brat!” I pushed away my plate of pancakes and ran out of there as fast as I could.

sadly I'm going to have to bow out, I've been ill lately and should be resting. Plus the fact that I can't figure out how to resize pictures so they fit within the rules . I've tried everything and the quality just keeps getting worse..I am sorry I really wanted to do this contest too...
