My graphic settings are on high I guess I just don't have as good a graphics card as everyone else. If my scores are going to be effected by this can you let me know because I can't see the point in continuing in the contest if I'm going to lose marks for something I can't control. I spent hours on my application so I don't want to do the same with round 1 for it be worthless. Thanks, Vintage |

Round 1 - Carolyn Green
![]() For this design, I maintained a city loft feel by using exposed brick, metal framed windows, and a modern color palate (this loft is all about contrasts--dark woods or black accents, cream or white, and one bright color per room). But by using clean lines and just the right amount of clutter, the loft is still inviting and personal. Floorplan
As you can see, I added walls to create separate spaces, but kept the open floorplan of a loft by using extra-wide arches to connect each room. ![]() Floorplan front ![]() Let's take a quick tour through the house. When you walk in the door: Just a little place to hang up your coat, toss your keys, etc. To the right is the door to the bathroom. You can see the exposed brick theme is prominent from the get-go. ![]() As you make your way to the living room: One of the perks of having the wall additions is keeping the music area and study slightly more private than it would have been before. You can see the green paintings on the right give a taste of the living room color palatte. ![]() Livingroom: I LOVE the fireplace in this room. (Not pictured) on the right are two bookshelves, and to the left is a chess table and door to the bedroom. ![]() Dining area as seen from the living room: Dining area has lots of seats for entertaining. The sideboard can act as a buffet. I didn't put any window treatments here--if this loft were several stories off the ground in a city, there'd be a great view to take advantage of. ![]() Kitchen as seen from the dining area: Pretty simple, classic floorplan here. I went with a grey-blue and bone white to keep it feeling clean, but a warmer dark brown wood to make it feel homey. ![]() And let's take a look at the two separated rooms in the loft. Here are two shots of the bathroom: ![]() ![]() And the bedroom (where I finally got to let my romantic nature run free, mwuahaha!): ![]() Confession Questions Total Spent on Loft: $80,567 1) What was it like to design within a budget? Since this budget was enormous--especially considering my most recent client who had me working under a very tight budget--this project felt much easier than I'm used to! It was great fun, and very freeing. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? Nothing had to be sacrificed to fit in the budget. I felt like I was throwing money away left and right, and when I was finished I still had over 400k left to spend. 3) What's your favorite element of the room? Hmm, that's a tough one. I think I like the way the exposed brick and interesting X windows tie the rooms together, and keep that city loft feel throughout, without being sterile. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? Well, I'm doing my best to not worry about the competition, and just focus on my own performance. But I get the impression I'm not allowed to side-step these confession questions! So if I absolutely had to pick someone... I guess I'd say Billi Thurston. And here I am, sitting down to play a game of chess after all that hard work!

(Nicked from Vampire, style-wise. Thanks, Vampire!) Mina Carter Wow. This really does scream 'fun, funky, boho', but it has quite a few very modern lines. I like that about it. One question: what was that third room? It seemed like a bedroom, but it was cut off, so I couldn't tell. Otherwise, it's awesome! Armana Demetri I like your style, it IS modern and classy. I also think that your office is a little bare and lacks some personality, which you DON'T seem to lack any of. If I were to score this application, it would have scored: Celeste Moranni The atrium looks a lot like an unused floor that you decided to dub the atrium to impress clients. It's very empty, perhaps on purpose. But it lacks a focal point. The column work is gorgeous, however. I think you should have darkened the wall a bit to make it really pop. Your room appears a bit cluttered, but that's the sign of a brilliant mind! Ginger Davis What's with the giraffe in your office? Just have to ask! It's an interesting focal point, and probably a great conversation starter! The room you designed and showed us is very open and breezy looking, almost like a seaside home. My one gripe is that you're not facing us in your own bedroom. Gerbera Svorsky I can hardly see your office. It looks like it'd be a great design, if only I could see it! Your bedroom seems ... plain, somehow, for someone who describes herself as eclectic. Nothing really jumps out at me. Billi Thurston The growth chart in the child's room quite literally clashed. Your bedroom is beautiful - where did you get the bedding? I also loved the window treatment! Carolyn Green Very clean, very beautiful designs. I do love how you used the doll houses as models! The dining room is very airy and beachy. Audrey DeBarbarak I love the room you designed for your friend! So vintagely beautiful! And original. Beate Broberg Your angles make it really hard to see the rooms. And your bedroom shot wasn't of your bedroom, it was of you and your cats. Please remember that this is about the rooms, not the designer! Jaimee Liddell Turn your graphics up all the way before you start Round One. Your stuff looks fuzzy when they're not. ![]() Chloe Chanelle Your style seems almost blah to me. The room for Nina was dark and less than child friendly. Your bedroom was very blah as well - accessories! The only thing that seperates us from the animals is our ability to use them! Adz Burnett Very boho! Very very boho! I love your office area - so informal and sweet. I think your living room is a little dark. The wall mural in your bedroom makes that space! Janelle Scott You've done a fantastic job with your office areas! I also love the lounge area. The plants make that room really stand out. All your rooms seem almost cluttered, though. Maybe too busy? (I will be at a graduation all day tomorrow, I was with a friend and working today. I will check in, but only to pop in and say hello if there's any happenings!) |

Vintage - It's just that much harder to see what your designs are. Your graphics card is out of your control, short of buying a new one. So no, it shouldn't affect your scores. Just try and get better angles, kay? We, as judges and host, will not allow something out of your hands to affect your score. ~Chelle |

I agree, I have a rubbish graphics card and no matter how high my settings are my photos will come out blurry! It makes it harder to judge but thats on us not you and its not impossible - you'll get benefit of the doubt points. I liked your application so it shows you put in a lot of effort and please don't be disheartened because of a silly graphics card! |

I just figured you hadn't turned it all the way up, that maybe you forgot. That's why I said anything at all. Your design is really quite good, but your angles aren't. Are you using an in-game camera? |

To Vintage: I hope I didn't offend you in any way, I just wanted to make sure that your pictures werethe best that they could be. I am professional enough to judge on the designs and not how well your graphic card is. That would be kinda judging a real life beauty contest on how expensive or what designer made the clothes. I really hope that you understand and in no way was i saying you were going to fail because of your card. i am sorry again and I can't wait to see your next round! Bites and Kisses Vampire |

I designed an urban loft with my signature funky style completed with modern lines and design using the colors black, white, lime, and tangerine. I designed this loft using a lot of fun colors, patterned wallpapers and comfortable, classy furniture. Built-in bookcases, fireplaces and a state-of-the-art kitchen are the highlights of my design, all surrounded by bright, playful colors. The furniture is comfortable and cozy (the couch in the living room in front of the fireplace just begs to be cuddled up on!), and I used clean lines and patterns to pull everything together. ![]() ![]() The office is colorful and bright room, it makes for a great place to sit and read or work on the computer, because hey, if you have to work, you might as well do it in a fun, funky environment! From the office you can look out into the entryway. ![]() Across from the office is a sectioned off media room. You can relax and watch T.V, challenge you friends to a PS3 match, or just hang out and listen to records in a comfortable, relaxing atmosphere. ![]() The living room is my favorite room in the house! I love how it turned out, from the built-in book-cases to the vintage patterned wallpaper that ties all the colors in. ![]() ![]() The bathroom has a little bit of a romantic air to it, from the claw-footed tub to the almost heart-shaped chandelier hanging over it. There’s also a double shower cordoned off behind the glass-block wall. ![]() The dining room was particularly difficult for me to design, because I wanted it to flow well with the other parts of the house but somehow I just couldn’t get the colors to mesh! I stumbled upon an old piece of wallpaper and knew immediately that it would be perfect! Green really turned out to be the tie-in color in the loft. ![]() For the kitchen I used cool colors to compliment the 50's style, aqua-colored refrigerator I found. ![]() And finally, I used dark woods and a plethora of candles to create a peaceful, relaxing sanctuary in the bedroom. I continued to use fun colors, but I gave the room a bit of an Eastern feel and tried to make it as calming as possible. It turned out beautifully; it’s a great place to go and rest or meditate. ![]() ![]() ![]() Total Spent on Room: $74,124 Confession 1) What was it like to design within a budget? Easy? Hard? Easy sometimes and hard others? The budget was very, very easy for me to work within. It was the largest one I’ve had, and I’m proud to say I stayed comfortably within it. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? The budget posed absolutely no problem for me. I was able to go above and beyond what I’d hoped to do with the loft. Because of the excess of money after my initial design, I was able to go back and upgrade many pieces, and incorporate a few more extravagant pieces. 3) What's your favorite element of the room? I’m really happy with how the whole house flows together. There are definitely different styles used within the loft, but I think they all mesh together nicely. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? I haven’t given it much thought, there are so many talented designers competing here, but if I had to name someone, I’d say Carolyn Green. Judging from the rooms I’ve seen thus far, her style is fantastic and she’s got a real eye for what goes together and what does. Her rooms look very put-together, but still very homey. |

My intent for this design was to create a fresh, homey space that focused on rich earth tones and a whimsical mix of wood. I didn't want the loft to feel sterile, but I did try to incorporate subtle contemporary features with my classic vintage pieces. Aerial ![]() Frontal ![]() Kitchen The light mustard paint, used throughout the loft, and touches of burgundy and green give the kitchen an earth-inspired cozy feel, while the exposed white masonry, neutral cabinets and counters, and stainless steel finishes balance the design with a splash of contemporary. ![]() Dining Room I wanted the dining room to feel a little more intimate in the open space. By using deeper shades of the kitchen's colors and heavier wood, I created a rich and inviting space ideal for sharing a special meal. ![]() Living Room Since the living room is the first room people see when they walk in, I really wanted it to pop. I used fresher colors to create a relaxing aura and make it a great place to come home to. The twin vintage sofas coordinate beautifully with the floral wallpaper and also contrast the modern form of the tan contemporary couch. ![]() T.V. Area The TV room is situated conveniently behind the living room and out of the reach of annoying glares. I used subtly darker tones of those in the living room to invent a cozier feeling. Plus+ Surround sound and plasma screen TV! ![]() Bathroom The bathroom, being the only one in the loft, needs to accommodate many things. It includes a shower, tub, toilet, laundry and drier facilities, and plenty of wiggle room. The cheery pink and green make it impossible to dislike doing laundry. ![]() Bedroom I really wanted the focus of the bedroom to be on the texture and color of the furniture, so I put up some whitewashed wood paneling and used neutral window treatments. The same analogous color scheme was proposed, with bright pinks, greens, and blues. ![]() Finishing Touches ![]() Confessional ![]() 1) What was it like to design within a budget? Easy? Hard? Easy sometimes and hard others? Budget? I would hardly call $500,000.00 difficult to work with. I really felt like I could go anywhere, so It was a great weight lifted off of my shoulders. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? Definitely. I wanted to mix contemporary and vintage, and with this price point, I was able to afford some higher-end retro pieces to go along with the glitzy modern stuff. Nothing had to be sacrificed. 3) What's your favorite element of the room? I love the white masonry. I think it adds a timelessness to the loft that brings together the contrasting modern and mid-century styles. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? Wow, everyone here is amazing. It's extremely hard to pinpoint one specific designer. I'm going to say Mina Carter, because of her funky flair. She is the type of person I aspire to be, not to mention she has amazing talent and a great eye for color. |

![]() Overhead: ![]() Frontal: ![]() Walking into the home, there is a small entryway leading to the living area. The fire pit makes an interesting focal point in this area designed for entertaining and socializing with company. ![]() The living room also holds the television and stereo of course, which is visible from the various seating areas around the fire pit as well. ![]() Walking through the living area leads you into the kitchen, with a clear retro design. Red and white with plenty of polk-a-dots really creates a 1950s flashback, though modern touches have been added as well. ![]() The dining area is clearly separated from the kitchen by its raised design, though the retro style is carried over making these two rooms blend wonderfully. The chairs were salvaged from a fading diner and given new life in this residential dining area. A booth, salvaged from the same diner as the chairs, provides ample seating near the large window, which has great ocean views. A shelf runs the length of dining room, separating it from the living area and serving as a perfect spot for buffet style dining, or just keeping fruits and vegetables on hand. ![]() You can enter the bedroom through a door from the living room, just outside the kitchen. The bedroom has a clearly feminine appeal, and features bright colors that catch the eye and rejuvenate the body. ![]() ![]() The bathroom is located just off the entry way of the home. This room has touches of masculinity with the brown theme. However, femininity is maintained through the use of sheer curtains and candles to soften the room a bit. This blending of masculine and feminine makes it comfortable for guests of all genders but also fitting for the woman of the house. ![]() ![]() Confessional ![]() Total Spent on Room: §58,565 1) What was it like to design within a budget? Easy? Hard? Easy sometimes and hard others? Easy. The budget was so large, I didn't come close to touching it. Of course it helps that I'm a bargain shopper! Yard sales and thrift stores are your friend. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget constraints? It's pretty much in tact, though while visualizing, I saw a brighter living room and bathroom. Once I was in the house though, those plans didn't really work for me. The changes in my vision had nothing to do with budget. 3) What's your favorite element of the room? My favorite element of the room would have to be the retro inspiration of the kitchen and dining. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? Wow, everyone is tough competition, but if I had to pick one person I guess I'd say Carolyn Green. Her creations are so perfect and seem to flow so well. I love her style and would definitely hire her if I weren't my own designer! |

Aerial Shot ![]() Living Area For the living area, I went with more of a darker design, as this room is for those lazy nights where you can sit back and put your feet up and feel cosy. ![]() Office Nook The office is part of the living area, but it is also set into its own little nook, so it doesn't look out of place. ![]() Kitchen With the kitchen I went with more brighter colours of green, biege and tan. ![]() Dining Area As this room is in line with the kitchen, I went through and used the same colours, but with a splash of white to give this area a clean and crisp look. ![]() Bedroom For the bedroom, Iwent with nice, pinks, purples and dark browns. It gives this room a feminine look to it. ![]() Bathroom For the bathroom, I have used, whites, aquas and greens to furnish this room, with little specks of pink. ![]() Frontal View ![]() Confessional ![]() What was it like to design within a budget? Easy? Hard? Easy sometimes and hard others? It was very easy to design this loft within the budget given. Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? My concept was to have comfort and sophistication in the designing of this loft. Due to the huge budget, it was more than easy to pull it off. What's your favorite element of the room? My favourite element would have to be sunny feel to the kitchen and dining rooms. It gives the feeling of warmth which in my experience in designing is very appealing. Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? Undoubtably Adz Burnette. Her style is just amazing, and she really can turn such a simple and plain floorplan into something just beautiful and classy. Last pic coming soon and Price. |

Easy? Hard? Easy sometimes and hard others? Well, with this budget, it was extremely easy. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? My original concept is never 'in tact'. My design process takes me from a rough idea to something completely different. I might have one chair or a specific paint color from the original concept, but everything else will change. Something might seem like a good idea, but once it is in the space, it will look out-of-place. My style is really a lot of trial and error. 3) What's your favorite element of the room? I love, love, love that all of the rooms are color coordinated. I also enjoyed branching out from my normal minamalist style to try my hand at a more cluttered feel. The space is still clean and modern, but has a few more "home-y" touches. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? While, I think everyone here has great style. I love seeing how others make the same space look so different. However, I would have to say that my personal favorite it Carolyn Green. Her looks are very classic and the perfect balance between clean and cluttered. Edit: Sorry about the mistakes in the pictures, if I have time later I will fix them. |

Overhead ![]() Front ![]() I went for a simple yet sophisticated, beach living look for the living room. ![]() ![]() The bright colours and natural materials used for the kitchen give a bright and breezy coastal feel. ![]() A beautiful windowseat and low decking area separate the kitchen and dining area and adds to the coastal feel of the room. ![]() This dining area makes for a fun, informal area to entertain close friends. ![]() The earthy colours and materials used for the bathroo give a slightly masculine, back to nature feel. ![]() ![]() The bedroom is vibrant and feminine... ![]() And has a built in office area. ![]() Relaxing on the Wii when the loft was finally finished! ![]() Confessional! ![]() (Jaimee's hair and eyes have disappeared from my game and I don't have tie to try and find them again so I've given her new ones, hope that's ok!) Total Spent on Room: 89,951 1) What was it like to design within a budget? The budget was enormous so it was fairly easy. However, I never really find it hard to work to a budget as I find that if you get various expensive pieces then smaller less expensive pieces can complement it. For example in the bedroom the bed cost £7,000 from a bespoke furniture shop but the chair was £50 from a thrift store. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? As i found it easy to work within the budget my concept is still in tact. 3) What's your favorite element of the room? I love the window seat, it can be a place to socialise or to sit and daydream. It's a beautiful spot. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? Everyone's designs are fantastic but if I had to pick one I'd say Carolyn Green, I love the simplicity in the sophisitication of her designs. |

Easy? Hard? Easy sometimes and hard others? I think it was easy, as it was a very big amount of simoleons. So it was very easy. 2) Is your original concept 'in tact'? Or did some elements have to go due to budget contstraints? Well, I would have liked to use some colours on the walls of the livingroom and kitchen, but with all the other colours used in the furniture, it would be to much for my taste, therefor I painted the rooms black, wich I think looks really great instead. I love dark walls =) 3) What's your favorite element of the room? I would say the bathroom because of all the coloured tiles, as I said before, I love dark walls, but also colours, and these tiles fulfills both. 4) Who, in your opinion, is your biggest competition? I think the quality of design is very high in this competition and it is hard to choose one, but I would say Mina Carter because of her bohemian-like style, I really like the room she designed in her application.
