The concept is simple: You seperate the online from the harddrive. Meaning two of everything. You have your story line for the none-multiplayer and when you want to play online you make a new sim and interact with whoever is online. You could still have a job, the only downside is you wont have reaccuring relationships..

Hard to describe, I mean I got the theory in my head so let me just ask:

Why can't EA games make the sims multiplayer/online based ALONG WITH the none internet.

They made SimsOnline...and it was horrible.

My soul still aches from the failure of that game.

How would online mode be any real difference from the game as it is now, besides characters being named even dumber things than they are as it is (yay, I'm gonna go have my sim talk to SexyTwilightVamp0498) - sims don't "chat" to each other with meaningful text, they speak simlish with thought bubbles. The sims could be controlled by other simmers, but would it really matter? I guess there could be an ingame chat function as well, but why not just... chat?

TS3 does sort of have some MMOish concepts and I guess the exploration/house building/skill building aspects would lend well to an online type game, but since there'd be so little difference between computer-played sims and human-played sims, I just don't see the point.

It's a good concept, but when you really look at it, I don't think it would work that well. Imagine a nice big blank neighbourhood where people from all around the world could put their houses and raise their sims, and the whole neighbourhood functions when you're not there making decisions from it. Oh but wait, don't half of us hate that part of TS3 anyway?

Haha sure if they made it, I'd try it, but really I think sims should stick to offline rather than online. There are too many GOOD mmos out there to compete with

It's been done before. As above posters said it didn't really work out online.

To this day Sims Online is the only Sims game I have never bothered to install.

I'd have to agree with everybody else, it really wouldn't work. Like HP said, sims names would get annoying, maybe even obscene. And the houses/lots people might be able to build, ergh, the neighbourhood would look a mess. No, I'd deffinitely stick to offline.

I guess, if they implemented some sort of seperate online style game, something like Runescape with a sim you create, maybe it could work. But I don't know about that. The original game would never work.

I for one played Sims Online it was horrible, I played for about a year right when it was first released. They knew they had a failure on their hands and I think they were trying to revamp it right before they dumped it in '07, something about renaming it also. So yeah I have a copy of Sims Online collecting dust.

It just didnt have the same feel imo as Sims. I think with TS3 and it being an open neighborhood it gives that feel of basically things going on around you like you would in an MMO.

I got Sims Online and didn't even bother playing, it cost extra money to actually play in besides the initial cost (I got it as a gift because it came in some pack) :P

I wouldn't mind just having a simple 2-4 player LAN multiplayer mode where a few people could share a neighborhood over an Ethernet connection and have their Sims interact in real time.

Meh.

That's a great idea! It seems that EA won't make an online game because of the failure of the sims online, however the sims have progressed so much since then. The open neighborhood and 3D graphics would set for an interesting an exciting online game.

I played Sims online for two weeks, It wasn't great. But I was hoping that Sims3 would have a online option. Maybe like have a neighborhood that for each player could visit or something like that.

Considering that the usual reaction people have to sims not under their control is to wall them up and kill them, this is probaby not a healthy thing you want to have happen to your sims.

Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I cannot accept, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of those I had to kill because they pissed me off.

All I am going to say with regards to this is that why release one game which has the functunality of 2?

They can make more money by selling a SIM3 style online game and we, the addicts, will still buy it on top of all the other sims games we own!

MMOish game would require servers and upkeep of those. Complicated and risky business, with monthly fees for the players.

Non-MMO could be simpler, but possibly inconvenient to play if you need same players for each session and how would it be done, really?

A lurking translator who goes stealthily converting text strings into finnish when he feels like doing that, which is very rarely.

They can't even release TS3 without major bugs. How bad would an online version be?

The idea of my sim interacting with sims that are not AI really excite me, but I have no idea how would be the best way to do that. I heard The Sims Online turned out to be a huge 3D chat room. Anybody here is into Second Life? It's kinda boring... '=(

It'd be cool, but TSO was a huge failure so I think that kind of turned EA away from the idea. I like the LAN idea though, brings back team fortress classic memories. ^^;

I never played the sims online as I heard it was terrible so simply didn't bother. I did at one point come across second life though and I can imagine that if sims 3 went online it would end up like that. Filled with the cyber sex obsessed and obscene, those sort of people are like flies to crap with that sort of thing. I am happy there is no sims 3 online (as if you hadn't guessed :P).

Agreed. I don't know much about Second Life, but wouldn't an online Sims game be similar to that? It is, afterall, 3D human-looking characters in a virtual world. There would be no purpose for Sims-style autonomy because each character is controlled by a real person. If you were to make it a Sims game with the fixed number of Sims interactions, people might find that too limiting for an MMO game. Granted, I've only tried SL once years ago and never tried any other MMO games so I don't really know what they're like. I'm just not sure a Sims game will buy you much over something that already exists (and costs nothing) like SL.

I do think there would be some utility to a smaller-scale LAN multiplayer mode though. Just about every household these days has PC's on a home network. It would add another dimension to gameplay to be able to share the same neighborhood. I think being able to enjoy a game with a handful of other people in close proximity is part of what has made the Wii so popular.

Meh.
