I make new families pretty much every time I start the game. Only thing is that I rarely play any of them past generation one :P

As far as keeping further generations from being ugly, my preferred method is simply to use "notownieregen" by J.M. Pescado and to hand-make all townies, so that I don't end up with ugly townies. (NPCs, however, are another matter.)
