I scrapped my almost-3-years running project after I get bored to see it is not finished and looks really bad compared to other people's creation. But I don't want to stop building a world, because philosophically I am a builder :P

So I planned to make a new world, called:

Nusa

This fictional world will be themed to look like Indonesian town by combining the environment and architecture from:
  • Batavia, Jakarta Old Town
  • Surakarta, Javanesse style town
  • Bali, sandy beach islands
  • Minang, mountainous ricefields

The world will be divided into those four styles. I even already planned the story

So I have chosen the map to build. I used real-world elevation data of "Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat", a province in Indonesia. I painted the terrain using Photoshop, and below is the result:

I would like to get some feedback regarding the terrain, as I am not a good terrain sculptor and painter

And now let's pray that I will complete this world!

from what i can see, the grass is okay, its a little splotchy in places, but considering you haven't started with trees or lots or roads yet, it should be an easy fix.. Also, your sand could be blended a lot more into the grass, maybe some dirt or deader grass between. Your mountains are VERY green as well, maybe some rock paint there.

Your sculpting is great, you chose the place well, though I'm just a little curious how you're going to divide the whole area up, with all those hills in the way

I didn't see you there. Hello. *runs* | Visit my CFF World thread

If you turn off the fog it will be easier to see. Making roads in hilly terrain isn't that hard. You just have to click numerous times on smooth ... or what it's in english, on the terrain or on the road tool. You can also make something fun out of it, like valleys.

So I made a little progress in the world making. I tried to repaint the world. Not sure if the mountain is not that green anymore :p

I also removed the fog so you can clearly see the terrain

I am currently working on the first town, based on Batavia old town. It will be a walled city with houses closely adjacent to another. I read that making a narrow alley is not a good idea. How bad it could be by creating a narrow alley in a world?

Ooh, a familiar name!

I'm looking forward on what you can come up with this - the base work is excellent already!

The mountain paint looks a bit shaky, you can see how the paint makes a grid pattern in a distant view. Maybe add another rocky paint to add some highlight/shadows?

The last picture is lovely, I love how you have used so many different trees creating a very lively looking little forest. For paint on the beach, I would say that you should mix the sand and grass together a bit more/blend them, and then you have this very dark grass under the foresty bit, which kinda makes sense in a way, cause of all the trees and shadow, but it also looks a lot less detailed than the rest of the paint job.

Generally, thinking about painting a world in PS - I think it's ok for the areas that are not gonna get so much closer look, but for the areas you do wanna draw attention to, I think handpainting in CAW is the way to go. The paints act totally different when blending them yourself.

Do I spy a railroad station to be in the town? :D

Great job so far!

Yeah sure. Here it is, under construction

On terrain painting, I am a little bit troubled by mix-n-match the opacity and the falloff value for the brush. It is quite hard for me to determine the perfect value. Do you have any tips?

And on the railroad station, I was inspired by Tanjong Pagar railroad station in Singapore. Not-so-Indonesian but still in the theme of old Batavia, which is art-deco. It is smaller than the real BEOS station of Batavia, Jakarta.

Ok, enough playing for now. Tomorrow is still Friday and I need to go to work!!

Looking good :D

For brush settings, I prefer the following (size, opacity, falloff)

5-10/5-10/0 and occasionally 15-25/5-10/0.

I only use bigger settings for applying base coat.

So, I tried to do a little overhaul on the mountain. I agree with all of you that there is something "wrong" with the mountain. I re-sculpt the mountain with cliff tool. Now it looks a little bit better.

And I am building the town center based on Batavia Stadhuis (now Museum Fatahillah, Jakarta)

Is there any way to lower a window height on a wall? I am trying to place windows in small gables in the roof. To make it look good, it should be closer to the floor base.

I don't think there's a way to get the window height to a different level at the wall - except for taking a different window. Some dormer windows found here:

tsr - Missyzims dormer windows

As you can see, she took the EA windows in a modding programm and "put them to the bottom" manually and saved it as a download.

If you're part of tsr, you can use the search and type in "dormer" and find lots of windows / sets for whatever style you need. Didn't find an equivalent from mts, hope you don't mind.

Happy building. ^^

Still struggling with CAW :x

So sad it is on TSR Maybe I will try to look more, or create my own window just like what she did

You're building like a machine :P

The buildings all look great, I especially like all the arched bits. The roof on the last one looks a bit off to me though, maybe change the color and lower the largest bit a little? It's so dark it steals all the attention from the building, that has some very interesting architectural features too.

I changed the pattern of the roof and lower the largest part of the roof now. It is better than previous brown one. I didn't see this WA roof and I chose brown instead to make it the same with other building nearby. :P

LOL. Actually I am on fire filling the lots in this part. After every detail in Old Town part is completed, I moved to other part of the region. And I am happy that I can find the good use of Cornices from Awesims (Inspired from Reyes Country and Clarkson Island) and the curvy-curvy walls :P

I am currently building school building. It is based on the actual Santa Ursula school in Jakarta

I am currently furnishing the school with some furniture. I also planned to make this school haunted by building a tomb inside it.

So, here is the progress so far

Most of the building is unfurnished. I planned to build the exterior and architecture first, then move to furnish each one by one later. This will helps me picture how the town will looks like.

I LOVE your school!

Where did you get the arched columns from, that you used here?:

They look awesome and are terribly needed for a building of mine. (so far I used an archway instead but actual columns would make it even more perfect.) xD

Those are the Ambitions arches (doorways) (or any arches for that matter) if my eye-sight is correct.

ETA
I guess my eye-sight was not in proper condition
and yea, now that I look at it again and closer, are not even close to Ambitions arches... But hey, they were arches! *giggles tiredly*

Those are Showtime Archway named "Spanish Colonial Columned Archway"

I REALLY hate the fact that EA think that Arches == Door Frame! It really annoys me that there is no such thing like arches in TS1 (the perfect one) and TS2. Though actually making arches snaps on the wall is really convenient to build arched corridor like that, all of those "archway" look stupid. That was the story at least until Showtime released. (Well, I just realized this beautiful arches nearly 12 hours ago )

Thanks for the reply. It's good to know how to get that object, tho I really hate EAs policy regarding "archways" / connecting columns. In Sims1 / Sims2 was so much easier. Especially since I don't always want those connected thingies to be at a gridline, but at the HALF of a grid-line. -.-
*slightly frustrated* Not sure whether I'M going to buy an expansion pack just for one friggin feature. :/

I have to admit that I've been quietly watching this thread, as I didn't really feel like having anything helpful to say. Anyway, I love what you're doing, the latest buildings you've added to the Old Town. This is turning out so lovely, a world I'll definitely download.

pinketamine and the rest visitor: Thank you for visiting here. Hope I can complete this world. This will be a veery long journey, though. Because it is just started

I have furnished the school, and now moved on to another lot. I made a coconut farm outside of the Old Town, and build a farm house based on The Residence of Bosscha in Bandung, Indonesia

So here is the progress:

And this is the aerial view of the coconut farm

It is still a rough sketch which focused in the architecture part first. The house located in a hilly lot. Because I haven't do any landscaping, so the house looks plain. I will update it later. :p

How do you think about the farm or the house? I welcome any feedback.

Weekend is approaching. I made a little progress on the farm, so I have completed building, furnishing, and landscaping the farm. Here is the result.

And I am building a new building in the Old Town. The Schouwburg Weltevreden, now known as Jakarta Art Building. It will be a show venue in the Old Town.

Anyway, happy birthday to me. :p
