I've got a friend who really would like to know if it was possible to have buyable fireflies.

So yeah is there a way i can extract them from the game?

Sort of... The butter/fire flies are a social object which just have a placeholder for the actual insects. I think that if you created a buyable object which spawned the "Social - Catch Flies" object then deleted itself though, you'd probably be able to make some of the flies appear on your lot. You might even be able to make the social itself show up in the catalogue, I've never actually tried...
