I've recently gotten back into The Sims again after hearing about Late Night. I bought it, installed it, and was excited to play.

However, the game runs fine for maybe 15-20 minutes, then it starts going slower and slower and my laptop starts getting hotter and hotter, to the point where my laptop gets so hot that it just shuts down.

Any ideas how to fix this? I've got a feeling it has a lot to do with CPU usage. Right now I just play racing before the computer shuts down. I barely even have time to create a 4 person family.

  • General - Check Temps
In some cases, game bugs/crashes/general computer issues can be caused by your computer overheating. To ascertain whether or not overheating is a cause of your problem, please follow these steps:

Firstly, download and install HWMonitor. Run the program - you should see lots of numbers; if you don't know what any of them mean, don't worry - you don't have to. :)

With HWMonitor running, use your computer normally for twenty or thirty minutes - no games, just browsing the web, using IM, playing minesweeper etc - and at the end of the twenty or thirty minutes, take a screenshot of the HWMonitor window and save it.

Then do the same again, keeping HWMonitor open, while you play Sims for twenty to thirty minutes. If your game is crashing before the thirty minutes is up, just play until it crashes. If your computer is freezing, shutting down, or restarting itself, play for as long as you think you can before the freeze/shutdown/reboot, then quit the game. Take another screenshot of the HWMonitor window.

Finally, attach both screenshots to a post in this thread - you can upload them to photobucket or tinypic etc, or you can hit "Go Advanced" in the Quick Reply box and use manage attachments to upload them to MTS.

Alright here's before:

And here's the after. It wasn't that bad today, tbh. It's been much, much worse...but there is the definite increase in temperature

You definitely have a over heating issue. The more you play the more likely you are to do damage to your system.
There are a couple of things I noticed about your specs, other than being on the weak side:
You only have Windows Vista SP1 when SP2 has been out for some time
Same with DirectX, there is a DirectX 11 available
Your Graphics driver is nearly 2 years old.
Since you mention the laptop gets hot enough to shut down, my best advice to you is not to play the game anymore on that system.
See the Game Help:Your Computer is Like a Carwiki Guide.

Well that sucks :/ God knows I don't have the money for a new computer.

Just read about the HP9700 Laptop having a notorious overheating problem because of bad motherboards...great.

You still need to monitor the temps. Once a total system shutdown happens, things may already be unstable.
And it may still happen again or worst comes to worst won't boot next time, if you're lucky enough that it didn't burst into flames as has been reported.

Have a good backup plan, in any case and back up often.
