The Sims 2 Store will be Closing March 31

Beginning March 31st, The Sims 2 Store will be closing its doors. Any content purchased from The Sims 2 Store will no longer be available after this date. Please download your purchased content and save an archive copy for your future use by March 30th. Your purchase history can be found by logging into your EA account on The Sims 2 Store (http://thesims2store.ea.com ), selecting "My Account", and clicking on "Purchase History" on the Account Details page.

SimPoints will be available for purchase on The Sims 2 Store until March 9th. If you would like to use your SimPoints balance to buy additional content on The Sims 2 Store, you must do so before March 31st.

If you have an EA Account Balance, that balance can be used on other EA sites. Visit http://www.eacashcard.com for information on how to use your EA Account Balance.

If you have a SimPoints balance, you can also use your SimPoints to purchase content on The Sims 3 Store. Your SimPoints balance is associated with your EA Account and will remain available for use on The Sims 3 Store after The Sims 2 Store closes. However, please note that to use The Sims 3 Store you must be a member of The Sims 3 Community (https://www.thesims3.com/register.html). Visit www.TheSims3.com/Store for additional information. Content purchased on The Sims 3 Store is not compatible with The Sims 2 game.

EA didn't say it but since TS3 Store is opened, any countries could buy TS2 Store items because SimPoint system and EA account are the same for both.

TS2 Store close before its third anniversary (Launch in July 2008). [Mod note: removed reference to piracy.]

Another Goodbye TS2... The last official TS2 thing will be the website.

Does this mean you won't be able to buy Sims 2 expansion packs and stuff?

At the risk of possibly talking about a forbidden subject, would this mean that exclusive TS2 Store content could be shared after the closure?

ETA: Just so I'm clear, I meant in the spirit of the "Sims 2 Graveyard" and not piracy.

I don't mind if you call me "MSD" or something for short.
Perhaps someday I'll have leisure time back...

Legally? Not unless EA approved it or issued an official declaration that they were surrendering their IP rights to that content (along the lines of a creative commons release). Their stuff is their stuff, and EA doesn't need to make it available to the public to still own all rights to it.

No way, EA want to kill TS2, so I don't think they'll do something official.

What I'm gleaning from this announcement is what a terrible service for the consumer the Sims store business model is. If I had purchased store content and needed to re-install for some reason and didn't keep a backup of the download...money down the drain.

So, really what this says is BACK UP the files for any store content you purchased. If it's really important to you, don't just back it up on a drive, do a redundant backup to CD or DVD.

And then test the backups to make sure they actually work. I know when I reformatted my computer my backups didn't and I needed to re-download and use the launcher to install them. Maybe I did something wrong (very possible) but if you're worried about losing your store items I would test your backups to make sure they actually work before the store closes.

Do game manufactures never learn? People like the games that they like, sell them what they like. *ugh* Square EAnix figured it out, maybe the should talk to EAaxis.

This really bums me out because I've been wanting to buy stuff from there and haven't got around to it yet. Now I feel like I have to rush it. Does this also mean they are taking down the site? If so, It would probably be a good idea to download and backup patches just in case I have to do re installs. *sigh* I guess they are really trying to push us to move forward to Sims 3.

They will do whatever they can, even by force, to make gamers play TS3. Ha! EAtards are notoriously famous for killing worthy games -- see what they did to SimCity series. Morons!

Getting rid of the Sims 2 Store in no way means that you won't be able to buy Sims 2 EP's and SP's-after all they did just release Fun with Pets, University Life, and Best of Business this past summer. Those three and EP's/SP's like Seasons Glamour Life, Happy Holiday Stuff, Bon Voyage and Apartment Life will still be available in the EA Store and places like Walmart, Target etc.

EA makes money off of the EP's and SP's because players are still buying the Sims 2. Granted that they are still producing new copies of Sims 1 Complete Collection more than ten years after TS1 was released, I don't think you need to worry about EP/SP production and sales of TS2 stopping anytime soon because EA is still raking in the money from TS2.

EA is the type of gaming company that as long as they can squeeze a single dime from it, they will keep producing it. The Sims 2 Store is being closing because they simply were not making money off of it anymore .
The Sims 2 Store, unlike the Sims 3 Store has pretty much been a failure from the beginning because they mostly offered content available in EP's SP's that gamers already owned rather than all exclusive content like the TS3 Store. Why should they continue to support the dead weight of a retail site where no one want the content or already has the content?

Plus one fact: there are many sites which feature far better CC for free than the Store ever did!
So weep no tears for it's demise, because it was the start of the "light bulb" moment for EA, when they realized that they had been missing the boat by not offering for real money CC that simmers would pay for.
They figured it out for Sims 3 for sure.
Just another way for them to make more money for stuff they think is worth it.

God, this is so depressing. It's so hard to say goodbye to a game you love so much. I mean, I can't play games that are older than 3 years. Maybe I'm crazy, but it feels kind of depressing... Oh, well. Hope there will be seasons and pets for TS3, otherwise I'll never completely give up on TS2. Even if it will be depressing. I just can't.

The Store never got past BETA stage, was an outrage in the community, and never had centre stage like the Sims 3's counterpart. I think we should leave this page and it's kinda obvious that EA wan't to move efforts into a new age.

I'm a freaking poet.

Why do you have to say goodbye to the game because the store will no longer be open?

As long as they don't take the games away I don't care.

In my honest opinion, the official Sims 2 store on the Sims 2 website really sucks anyway....if there's other, perhaps not official, but better TS2 CC sites out there, why really grieve for it?

Does this mean The Sims 2 Store Edition will stop working? Just curious... I am pretty sure you don't mean that you cannot buy Sims 2 Ep/Sps off eBay but if that's true too please tell me as soon as possible. I'm still missing 2 EPs (My favorite two, too: Seasons and Bon Voyage) and most of the SPs.

TS2 Store Edition will still work.

I like it because it's a "no CD" launcher. I recommend it if you play to several CD required games.
It's still boring the "Please insert the CD" process when all is installed in the PC.

Store Edition is downloaded if you've got an EA account when you get a free item from TS2 Store.

It's only available in English, French and Spanish.

The article in the original link states:

However, I am either an idiot or something else is wrong. How is one supposed to do that? Purchase history gives no option to re-download anything.

My guess is that you go back to the page and you can re-download it there? Then again; that's what that Clever [Mac] App store is set up like, and I sadly doubt EA will have it so simple :/

You have to have the EA Download Manager and Store Edition installed in order to download items. So go download a copy of the EA Download Manager at the EA Site (not Sims 2-EA) once it is installed sign into the download manager. If you have purchased Sims 2 Store items the store edition will appear in the "My Games" panel, download and install Sims 2 Store Edition. After you have done that a notification will appear that you have objects available for download- download them. Theoretically since the Store Edition is available via the download manager items should remain available for download but who knows with EA. I think items import directly to your downloads or your teleport folders. If you have Sims 3 you will already have the download manager installed as it installs automatically with the game.
