Custom object mod: how to make it so the sim uses my phone handset?

I originally posted this in Object Creation, but I feel like this might be more suited to modding, since it definitely looks like it involves... modding... something. It's not an issue of bone assignments or anything meshing related, it looks like. See, I'm working on a custom wall phone, but there's an issue when it comes testing it out in-game. I can get the phone to disappear satisfactorily, but I cannot get the phone to appear in the sim's hand. Instead, the sim simply uses the original phone handheld that my phone was cloned from. I feel like there should be some kind of value somewhere that I need to edit to redirect the sim to use a different mesh, but I've been poking around at the contents of the file for several days now and just can't figure it out! Does anyone have any clue?
