I was recently gifted the generations EP. Played it for a while. Was disappointed by the lack of new stuff and the increased lag, but I'd hate to lose all the progress I've made on my main family. Can I uninstall the EP and keep playing the save file or do I have to go back to my back up?

You can always save the family in the bin. I would save one version with the house, and one without just in case.
