An inhabited lot or an owned lot moving to the lot bin will corrupt the game, but if I just move an inhabited lot in the 'hood, from road A to road B, without moving it to the lot bin, will that also make my 'hood corrupt?

No, that is quite all right. The game allows you, with that handy shift button. Make them all budge up to leave more room for others.

Just make sure you're not moving a beach lot, bacause doing so can crash your game!

It's not very clear, it depends on many things, but after about 800 sims, things can start going wrong. Sims vanishing, babies wanting to marry dogs, and weird stuff like that... Blame it on EAxis!

But then you can say you will never create that much sims, but the game does on its own. Most of those sims are useless NPCs, townies, downtownies... Open the "Characters" folder from your current neighborhood and you might be surprised by how many sims you have

To avoid creation of too many useless sims, you should totally download the Anti-Redudancy mod by Pescado! You can find the link here, as well as a long tutorial on how to create a totally clean neighborhood http://sims.wikia.com/wiki/Tutorial...an_neighborhood

I thought the limit of 800 character files was around NL, and the numbers have been revised upwards by a factor of ten since then (so you're looking more towards 8,000 to 10,000 character files before oddities emerge).

Fake edit: From Pescado in 2007 (emphasis mine):

Quote:
Before NL, number-of-characters was a serious problem that could be reached around 800-1000 entries. Furthermore, critical fixes which resolved the inefficiencies of the code could extend this out more. Post-NL, the iteration-max was increased to about 10x its former size, so it's reasonable to expect that iteration limits which were formerly hit at 800-1000 entries will expand by the same order of magnitude. It is unlikely that sheer "number of characters" alone will blow anything up, but it remains desirable to avoid the accumulation of cruft created by unnecessary spawning of useless characters and garbage tailings created by moving occupied lots, as these leave behind undesirable debris which can still jam your neighborhood's functioning.

Is this real, or a joke? How do you step on a butterfly? I've seen them flying around my sim's house. Can they land on the ground? Should I not let my sims catch butterflies anymore? Should I keep sims inside if there are butterflies around?

It was more or less an extended hyperbole. That, and an allusion to A Sound of Thunder.

So yes, a joke.

Certainly doesn't hurt to ask...we all know that EAxis tends to give people buttons that should REALLY not be pushed! At least in the Sims games.
