HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM BY REFORMATTING THE HARD DRIVE. WAS A DIFFICULT DECISION TO MAKE, BUT HEY, IT'S THE SIMS!
I was in a sub-hood of my game, when I needed to leave the laptop. When I returned, the laptop had shut down. I rebooted and noted that the computer was installing Windows updates, which explained the automatic shutdown. After all updates were completed, I tried restarting the game, and noticed that the opening cinema-graphics did not play. Then after a blank pause and a flicker, the program jumped to the title screen, loaded about halfway, then stopped. I then saw the message 'The application has crashed. The application will now terminate'. I tried to load the game again with the same results. I have since gone through each step of the game problem page - http://simswiki.info/wiki.php?title=Game_Help:Game_Problem and found no solution. I deleted the game cache files, that didn't work. I couldn't find any help here specifically related to my problem, so I then uninstalled, and reinstalled all 15 game packs - only to find the problem remains. Please help.
