View Full Version : Does anyone else really dislike the randomly generated names for babies?

The names that come up just aren't my style at all. I always have to go to the City Hall the change the poor kids names. They all seem very "teen-momish" and never suit the family.

EA has generated some interesting names for some of my sims. Most of the time I just let them be as I have twallans story progression & woohooer mod and a lot of my unactive sims are at it like rabbits.

I do wonder what the developers were on when they came up with the list of names.

I agree. They all seem to have a 'y' in places there should be an 'i' or 'a'. It's always Joslyn, Kaytlyn, Jayden.

Also Guadeloupe? Tuesday?! The fist one, okay is a name rarely, but Tuesday? Really?!

If you're tired of the strange name generation, Twallan has a tuning mod that allows you to choose names that you would like generated within the game.

Tuesday is a cute name! Give it a few days and it'd grow on you. I like naming sims "things" instead of "names". What is a name anyway? It's just a made up word, usually.

Diode, Diskette, and Doorframe are triplets. Their parents are Beadsprite and Awning Traveler. :)

Exactly! At least Tuesday is a name someone went by, even if only as a stage name. What kind of name is River? Or Blanket? Or Rumor?

People select some really stupid nouns for their offspring. And also for themselves... why should Sims get off easy?

You could call him/her Dorie, for extra cuteness! I'm not sure about Beadsprite, though... :)

I just dislike their translations. I play the game in my native language (which isn't english), and the names sounds pretty much like something from Duckburg.

I have Twallan's SP, and most of the time the names are ok, but there are times I use Master Controller and change it. Naming a boy Kelly or Courtney, for example.

She is a free spirit! Do not try to tell her who to be!!!

This is what gets on my nerves more than the random names. I can accept random names because it makes the game somewhat realistic (some people in the real world give their children bizarre names) but giving a gender specific name to the wrong gender   .

To be fair, Kelly started out as a boy name, but evolved into more commonly being a girl name over time. Google tells me that Courtney is an androgynous name that is more commonly used for girls.

Alright! I concede that it's fine to name your child after the days of the week  Thing is though, why Tuesday? It's probably the most nondescript day of the week! You might as well call your child 'mid afternoon'!

Midafternoon is the kind of name I'd use, too...

Maybe Midafter Noon?

There is already a repair woman named Tuesday Sears running around Sunset Valley. What I find interesting is when names from a story I'm reading online shows up in names of the inactives.

Moonbeam Smith. Nah, doesn't do it for me either. Stay away from Moonbeam. Now, Starshine, that is another matter. Starshine Smith. Bet you can't say that fast and drunk.

I bet Starshine can't say it fast and drunk either. Love to see the attempt, though.

I have to agree to a certain extent. I'd rather exchange your over-the-top weird names for my ugly boring normal names in my French game like Diane, Natalie, George, Simone, Susanne, Nancy, Stéphane and all those older generation names. They're just... lifeless. All of the random sims get overly common names in my game =/

This is why I get a pop up notification asking me to name any babies born to my families (Nraas). Otherwise, I like trying to explain away weird or silly names on the townies. To me it's more real, considering people in real life can have fairly odd names. I mean, me, my brother, and my father all have the same first name (mine is just the Spanish derivation that Americans loved to use in the '70s for girls).

What gets me is when my sister's name popped up in-game. My family and I all have relatively unusual names but the game made a townie with the name Alora. She even had red hair, just like my sister.

River Tam - Firefly
River Song - Dr. Who

Rumer Willis - Bruce and Demi's kid

And isn't one of Michael Jackson's kids named Blanket?

"What gets me is when my sister's name popped up in-game. My family and I all have relatively unusual names but the game made a townie with the name Alora. She even had red hair, just like my sister. "

Alora Dannen - Willow

Maybe EA takes names from weird celebrity children names.

My younger sister legally changed her name after my parents got divorced to Mae instead of her previous "English Name" (she's adopted from Korea), so I don't see the fuss about how a name is spelt as long as it's not overdone like Winniefredde (Winifred), Lybee (Libby) or Haethyre (Heather). EA just has gone a bit . . . far. I once, in a previous install, had 3 Israel's prancing around.

Believe it or not but I know two women in real life who are called Wednesday and Friday, respectively. They're not related, but they're both in their fourties and both tell the same story, namely that their parents were hippies and that these were the days they were conveived.

Wouldn't it be easier to just change your name? Neeh people probably won't forget it. Would you forget a girl named Monday?

Well, I often want to forget Mondays.

;op

Seriously, I just named a set of twins in my game Zilya and Zasha. I love unusual names - there were five other people in my class alone in my school who had the same name I did. HATED that. Unusual names = unforgettable and unique to me.

It's all in good fun, whether or not the game developers actually took themselves seriously with these names.

It's just like opening up People magazine and reading that a celebrity named their baby some cracked out name. You have a laugh, shake your head, imagine what that poor child will go through and thank all that is holy that it wasn't you.

Plus, if it reaaaally bugs you, there are ways of fixing it. I never put too much thought to it, really. I tend to get more offended at poorly dressed Sims than anything else. You may have a ridiculous name but at least have a decent sense of style!
