Design This - An Interior Design Contest

Thanks to MissRoxor and Buckley for the photos used in the banners

Qualifications to Judge
- Participated in Heaven’s Storyteller Contests (Original through round 3, Hero Edition through all 5 rounds)
- Participated in all 5 rounds of Qbuilderz’ Building Blocks Foundation Contest
- Judged for lipglosschaos’ Miss World 2011 Contest

Concept:
5 rounds. 5 rooms. For each round I will be giving you a single room floor plan on a 10 x 10 lot and the ask you to design the room for me under the specific requirements for the round.

On top of that each room will come with a preset little challenge of my choosing. It might be preset wall coverings, a necessary base game item of my choosing, or whatever else I can come up with. Make it pretty, make it work, and keep it all under budget.

Rules:
- TS3 only: I do not have TS2 and therefore cannot recreate the rooms for any TS2 contestants. I really am sorry.
- No CC or store content allowed: Every round will have a budget, and to be honest it would be very easy to cheat even accidentally. I also need to be able to double check your budget if a judge thinks there’s something off with your screenshot. I’m hoping to never actually have to do that, but the ability needs to be there and I don’t have every single piece of store CC in order to allow it.
- CC patterns are allowed since they don’t actually effect the cost of your lot. Please abide by the MTS standard of no pay CC and credit to the pattern creator.
- All EPs and SPs are allowed.
- No photo edits. Resizing only.
- No altering room structure
- No post editing. Spelling and grammar won’t be scored since this is a decorating contest, but there will be absolutely no substituting or changing of photos once you’ve pressed that first submit button. If you’ve made a mistake uploading the photos or imbedding them into your post I’ll allow you to edit and fix them but only after you’ve notified me. This is so judges can begin the judging process early if its more convenient to them.
- All in game cheats (such as moveobjects on) are allowed.
- I don’t see this being an issue, but the number of contestants will be capped at 20, first come first serve with no reserved spots. Even if I really really love you.

Requirements:
You’ll benefit from prior experience in decorating and a good understanding of CAST, but I really hope to have a few beginners enter as well. Before joining Qbuilderz’ foundations contest I felt embarrassed by building, but I learned so much thanks to him and his judges that I can now call myself a creator. I hope to be able to give the same confidence to new designers as well. No one is born knowing exactly what kind of plant will accent that couch and what colour the vase should be CASTed, that takes practice and here you’ve got five whole rounds of practice.

Timeline:
Each round will take place over 10 days, with the application round (Round 1) lasting two weeks (14 days) in order to achieve the minimum of ten contestants. Extensions will only be awarded under extreme prejudice and a stern look. I understand accidents and emergencies happen, but please think about how much time you’ll need for this contest before committing.

Judges:
If you wish to judge, please state so below. Please keep in mind I expect judging and comments to be finished within three days of the round ending so contestants can use the judges comments to improve. Again, exceptions can be made under dire circumstances (Hey, I’m a student too and I know what a pain in the ass finals can be) but please consider how long it will take to judge between 10 - 20 individual rooms every ten days before committing.

Your Judges:
- lauratje86 (http://www.modthesims.info/m/2249187)
- Elexis (http://www.modthesims.info/m/499665)
- malibibic (http://www.modthesims.info/m/7052820)

Your emergency Judges:
- ReyaD

Scoring Expectations:
- Layout - 10 points. Does the room layout make sense both realistically and regarding sims? Would it be playable?
- Requirements - 10 points. Easy points! If you have every item on the required list than you get all 10 points. However for each missing item thats a whole point off. If the list includes 5 deco items and you have zero, thats 5 points out of 10 possible. If you’re missing more than ten items you’ll get zero for this section.
- Rules - 10 points. Have you obeyed the posted budget? Do you have all required photos? Have the walls been moved?
- Colour Scheme - 10 points. How do the colours look? How do they feel? Do they complement each other well or clash horribly? And don’t forget the walls! If the furniture doesn’t work with the walls you won’t be scored well.
- Use of “The Fun Part” - 10 points. Basically whatever my mind can come up with.

For a perfect score of 50. Each round score will be the average of the three judges individual scores.

Round 1 Scores now up! Click here. (http://www.modthesims.info/showpost.php?p=3992357&postcount=105)

Like it or not, the living room is a very important place. This is where you relax with your family, entertain your guests, and the hardest room to clean following those wild teen parties.

For round 1, I want you to give me the ideal living room for under 10,000 simoleons. The current room price is 1,770 which gives you a budget of 8,230 simoleons.

Your list of required items for the round include:
- Seating for four
- A Coffee Table
- A piece of Entertainment (TV, computer, etc.)
- 5 pieces of deco (curtains and rugs don’t count)
- A rug

The Fun Part:
You are NOT allowed to cast or change the wall paint on that small section, and you must use the obelisk somewhere inside your room.

Entry Format:
Budget: Photo Required. If you have windows, you can use the “print screen” button to take a screenshot. For Macs you press Command-Shift-3.
Required Photos:
- 1 overhead
- Minimum 3, Maximum 5 in game photos. (Does not include the budget and overhead photos.)

Round 2 Scores now up! Click here. (http://www.modthesims.info/showpost.php?p=4000604&postcount=265)

Round 2 ends on Saturday, November 3rd at one second to midnight, Ontario Time. Click this for the timer (http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20121103T235959&p0=250&msg=Round+2+Countdown
)

If the living room is where you spend your free time entertaining, the kitchen is where all the hard work happens before that entertainment begins. I personally have some great memories of baking with my grandmother and putting out the kitchen fires by little sisters seem to spark just by walking into the room.

For round 2, I want you to make me a full kitchen and dining room for under 10,000 simoleons. The current room price is 1,800 which gives you a budget of 8,200 simoleons.

Your list of required items for the round include:
- A stove
- A fridge
- A sink
- At least one uncluttered counter
- Dining table with seating for 4 (or more)
- 8 pieces of deco (Room partition from “The Fun Part” counts as one)

The Fun Part:
You’ll notice when you download the file that I’ve given you a door! A very ugly, basic door. Don’t freak out, you are allowed to CAST it, but you are NOT allowed to move it. The partition can be CAST, moved, flipped around, whatever you want as long as its still in the room by the end.

Entry Format:
Budget: Photo required. If you have windows, you can use the “print screen” button to take a screenshot. For macs you press Command-Shift-3.

Required Photos:
- 1 overhead (gridlines allowed if you want to merge this one with the budget photo. I don’t mind)
- Minimum 3, Maximum 6 in game photos. (So no grid lines. Does not include the budget and overhead photos)

A FEW FINAL NOTES:
After much deliberation I’ve decided to allow the use of OMSP for decorating. OMSP is used as an extra slot to put deco items in places they won’t normally fit, and as the OMSP doesn’t add to the room and can’t even be seen in game I really can’t see a reason to exclude it anymore. One More Slot Please can be downloaded here. (http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=428179)

Windows can be added and casted if you want. GOOD LUCK!

Round 3 Scores now up! Click here (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=4009262#post4009262)

Round 3 ends on Monday, November 12 at one second to midnight, Toronto time. Click this for timer. (http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20121112T235959&p0=250&msg=Design+Contest+-+Round+3)

As a legacy player, the nursery is one room I tend to remake every generation, sometimes multiple times a generations. It’s quickly become one of my favourite rooms in any sims home and since I know most “normal” people hate the nursery and hate sims 3 toddlers I just had to make this a round! Just as a side note this room was originally 7 tiles smaller but then I play tested it again a few nights ago and realized there was no possible way to make everything fit and increased its size.

Budget for round 3 - Nursery is 8000 simoleons.

Your list of required items for the round include:
- Two cribs (Already included)
- Seating for one (Rocking chairs from the Supernatural EP count)
- 5 pieces of deco
- A toybox
- A potty
- Xylophone
- Peg toybox
- Building Blocks Table (with at least -3- accessible sides)
- Highchair

The Fun part:
For this round I have dropped down two un-casted cribs as well as a white picket fence. You CAN Cast the cribs, in fact you can even exchange the cribs for the more expensive base game one, but you MUST have two cribs in the room you submit.

The picket fence cannot be moved, casted or exchanged. You’re stuck with it where it is so good luck with that.

Entry Format
- Budget: Photo required. If you have windows, you can use the “print screen” button to take a screenshot. For macs you press Command-Shift-3.
- Overhead view. (Gridlines allowed if you want to merge this one with the budget photo. I don’t mind. But just recall if you go into the build tab -> Terrain paint you can take a budget + overhead photo without any gridlines!)
- Minimum 4, Maximum 6 in game photos. So no grid lines for these ones. Does not include the budget and overhead photos.

A FEW FINAL NOTES:
If for this round you forgot I said I’d change the minimum number of photos and you still only post 3 in game pics you’re getting points off. Even if all twenty of you do that.

OMSP and tipsy OMSP ARE allowed for decoration purposes. Neither add to the room and can’t even be seen in game so I really can’t see a reason to exclude it anymore. Windows and Rooms can be added, curtains would be considered would be considered -one- piece of deco total no matter how many separate curtains are used.

Round 4 ends on Friday, November 23rd at 1 second to midnight, Toronto time. Click this for the timer (http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20121123T235959&p0=250&msg=Round+4+Countdown).

Round 4 Scores now up! Click here. (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=4017181#post4017181)

One room that often gets overlooked is the study, a staple in a working family home but often overlooked when creating homes. Heck, I myself am guilty of downloading a lot, smiling at the study and then deleting everything to make room for another bedroom or washroom. Unfortunately for you, not only does this den have quite a few specifics for its “fun part”, its also on a nasty diagonal slant. : ) Good luck, ladies and gents.

Your budget for round 4 is 9000 simoleons. This includes the current cost of the room so your final amount must be 900 simoleons or less

Your list of required items for this round include:
- Seating for Three
- Computer
- Two separate skilling objects (Computer does not count as one)
- 10 deco pieces. (3 are already included in the fun part)

The Fun Part:

The accent wall... also this:

http://i254.photobucket.com/albums/hh87/ReyalinDawn/Screenshot-1035.jpg

You see all those items up there? Yeah you need to keep every single one of those items and incorporate them into the room. You may cast them if you wish, but they must be recognizable to the judges.

List of the items so you can double check: A plant, a yellow flower in a vase, the ugly bookshelf, the globe, and a full length mirror. None of these items can be traded for another in the same category. You’re stuck with ‘em.

As for the accent wall that CAN be changed, casted, done whatever you want with as long as the section of the wall that is currently covered is covered with something that is different than the rest of the room.

Entry Format:
- Budget: Photo required. If you have windows, you can use the “print screen” button to take a screenshot. For macs you press Command-Shift-3.
- Overhead view. (Gridlines allowed if you want to merge this one with the budget photo. I don’t mind. But just recall if you go into the build tab -> Terrain paint you can take a budget + overhead photo without any gridlines!)
- Minimum 4, Maximum 5 in game photos. So no grid lines for these ones. Does not include the budget and overhead photos.

A FEW FINAL NOTES:

Lol. It’s diagonal. If you don’t already know this, you can shift items off the grid if you hold down the alt key. Using the moveobjects off cheat will also be beneficial this round.

IMAGINE THE ROUND 5 BANNER IS HERE

Round 5 Scores now up! Click here! (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?p=4028337#post4028337)

Round 5 ends on Friday Dec 7th and one second to midnight, Toronto time. Click this for the timer. (http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20121207T235959&p0=250&msg=Round+5%21&csz=1)

You all knew this was coming (or at least had a sneaking suspicion. The Master Bedroom, the love nest, the home inside your home. The master bedroom should be your safe and sound sanctuary (or if you live at home, your parents’ sanctuary). It’s a place that you can make your own and the design choices are to fit what you love, and not a way to impress your friends by putting up art work you can’t understand.

The alternate title for this round is the Haxagonal Hell. : )

Budget for Round 4 - Master Bedroom is 15000 simoleons. Why so high? Because when I tested this round a month ago I kept going over 10k and i was just being dull, not trying to make it look good.

Your list of required items for this round include:
- A double bed
- Two side tables
- A dresser (wardrobe from Supernaturals counts)
- At least 2 windows. (Windows inside the “fun part” bathroom do not count for this requirement)
- 10 pieces of deco (bedroom and bathroom combined)
- Seating for two
- Fireplace OR television (Just cause)

The Fun Part:

An ensuite bathroom. You may use the wall tool to create a separate room for the bathroom INSIDE the hexagon. I cannot express enough the fact that the bathroom must be INSIDE the hexagon room I made for you. You should also probably include a door from the bathroom to the bedroom. Just saying.

Your list of required items for the bathroom include:
- A toilet
- A shower
- A tub (Yes the tub/shower combo can be used to count as both)
- A sink
- A mirror

Entry Format:
- Budget: Photo required. If you have windows, you can use the “print screen” button to take a screenshot. For macs you press Command-Shift-3.
- Overhead view. (Gridlines allowed if you want to merge this one with the budget photo. I don’t mind. But just recall if you go into the build tab -> Terrain paint you can take a budget + overhead photo without any gridlines!)
- Minimum 5, Maximum 8 in game photos. So no grid lines for these ones. Does not include the budget and overhead photos. (This is so you can include photos of the bathroom as well as the bedroom)

A FEW FINAL NOTES:

You can shift items off the grid if you hold down the alt key. Using the moveobjects off cheat will also be beneficial this round.

OMSP and tipsy OMSP ARE allowed for decoration purposes. Neither add to the room and can’t even be seen in game so I really can’t see a reason to exclude it anymore. Just wondering, there's no door...which design wise is nice, but not realistic. Would make it more difficult if we had to work around a door. Not complaining really, just curious if you had considered this. Also, I'm assuming a stereo would count for the entertainment? And do plants count towards the deco?

Yes I have thought about doors and windows but I decided to leave them out (this round) in order to make things easier since this is only the first round. I wanted to give people as much room for creativity as I could in order to attract both new and veteran creators.

Not mentioning the stereo was a conscious choice since using a radio instead of a cheap TV really helps in regards to the budget, but yes, a radio does count as entertainment.

Plants definitely count as decoration. Sorry for the confusion and thank you very much for the questions.

Are cheats like MOO (MoveObjects One) and such allowed?

Moveobjects On, ConstrainFloorElevation (Although how you'd use this one is beyond my understanding seeing as this is a design contest, not a build contest), alt key and any other in game cheats are allowed as I view them to to just be another skill you need to master to be a good designer.

I'll go edit that into the rules. Thanks, Jag!

So it's a maximum of 5 pics, one of them being over head and one being lot value? So 3 extras? Just want to make sure I got it right ;)

Shoot, I'll fix that once I get back home. The minimum/maximum numbers are only in regards to the in-game pics that show off your room. The overhead and lot value can technically be counted as one photo, but even if you use two they will NOT count towards the minimum/maximum numbers I have listed for each round.

I'd be happy to judge, if you're still in need of one :-)

Thanks for offering and yes I do need judges! I'll send you a PM tonight once I get home with some details about the scoring and to see if you have any questions. Thank you so much.

Ok, thanks Reya! (That's kind of what I thought you meant, but I wanted to make sure before I took too many)

I hope it's ok, but I did just a bit more than resize the top view, I cut the lot info and pasted it closer to the room so I didn't have to have so much grass ;) I figured that was kind of like resizing...didn't edit the actual pic really.

Anywho...being stuck with a black wall and the oblisk, the only sensible choice to me was to go gothic victorian :D

LOL jones7659, I just had to! ;) I love interior decorating.. and I couldn't just turn down this opportunity! Also, thanks for clarifying! :bunny:

Alrighty, to the entry:

I did what jones did and pasted the lot values onto the overhead view of the house so I could avoid having the ugly UI in the way of everything. ;) Now, I feel like I should give it a name.. and it shall be called "Coral Seascape" because the colors remind me of the ocean and its serenity, and how it's more of an artist's corner for creativity! :) And I nearly passed the budget limit! *phew* Goodthing I could get all the items I wanted in there under $10,000!

Sorry I couldn't answer your question, SeeMyu, but jones answered it correctly. But just for the benefit of others:

In this round you cannot recolour or remove the black wall covering, and you must use the obelisk but you can recolour or redecorate every other aspect of the room such as the walls, the floors, the ceiling, and anything else in between.

I'm willing to judge if you still need one.

Yes! Thank you very much! I'll add you to the judge list.

I embraced the black wall and went for a modern/contemporary style, which unfortunately made that awful obelisk kind of hard to utilize. You can see it as decor for your pet fish, behind the aquarium. The aquarium is still useable -- I just had to tug it out from the wall slightly. In addition to watching fish swim around, Sims can watch TV, play video games or read books. I followed the trend, and copy/pasted the budget info onto the overhead shot. Total cost furnished is 9,799

My idea for this was old lady type theme. And it looks a little too close to what my grandma's old living room looked like. Just missing the china cabinet. xD

For the living room I decided to go with a semi classical feel. Not quite Victorian but passible with certain elements borrowed from it. Due to the black accent wall, I went with a soft gold and dark brown wooden accent throughout the room even on the radio.

Well, I hope this looks as good as I thought it did. :lovestruc

Wow, there's still at least 10 days to go and we have 7 entries already! I figure now would be a good time to repeat that I AM CAPPING THE CONTEST AT 20 CONTESTANTS.

That means first come first serve. If you start writing a post and there are only 19 contestants, but once you click send you're contestant number 21 then I'm really sorry but you'll be out of luck. You can still of course play along with the rest of the rooms, but you will not be scored.

Thanks again to everyone whose joined so far, and I can't wait to see the upcoming entries.

Possibly a silly question, but are all the rooms going to be completely separate? (As in, if I went for a modern look with the living room, and the round two is a bathroom, will it be considered in the same house or...?)

ReyaD
15th Oct 2012, 9:32 AM
Originally I was going to ask everyone to pick a theme at the beginning of the contest and stick to it throughout the contest but as I developed the contest I realized I wanted this to be about creativity more than the challenge.

So to answer your question, Tamlyn, each room can be considered to be part of a completely different house, in a completely different time period if you so choose.

Well this was fun, and quickly done for me (for a change!)

I decided to go a little Victorian, a little Mission-ish. At one time, I imagine this would have been considered "contemporary".

Anyway, here's the money shot (so to speak):

Required item, the obelisk, acting like a backdrop:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fnNYJTyeBlM/UHzjEYrtksI/AAAAAAAAF90/OePkhKXgbk0/s800/Screenshot-179.jpg

Rug, paintings, even room for a desk! Also, I decided the black wall was where the entrance to the living room would be, so I left it alone. On the overview, you can see there's plenty of walking space behind the couch because of that:

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-S8UAbM0KkWo/UHzjFVxkcUI/AAAAAAAAF98/xGKl8FvDf_0/s800/Screenshot-180.jpg

I read the tutorial, it gets a little muddled but I'll give my best shot.

I went with a color scheme to make the obelisk blend in a little better, because the trouble I was finding was that it stood out like a sore thumb no matter what I tried. I used it as a focal point and a mock window. And threw another large ungainly plant in the room to balance it. Also added aditional accent walls to distract from the large black wall. The Newpaper Print Rug is the Fun Element.

I have discovered how dependent I am on the store objects I own. I constantly grabbed something, put it in, blinked, checked and realised (then cried).

I went for a black/white/red colour theme tied to the roses, with natural greens to complement (and also pull it back to the roses).

That was the theory at any rate.

I think I know the answer to this, but are we allowed to add windows to the room?

Also, what about mods that don't affect the value of the property at all? Like the stencil remover mod and the curtain height adjuster mod?

ReyaD
18th Oct 2012, 12:33 AM
A good rule of thumb is if ___ is not in the room, you can add it. If ___ is already in the room you may not remove it. Doors and windows can def be added (This round).

Stencil remover and hight adjuster are allowed as they do not add value to the lot or help you cheat costs.

Reya, can we add on to the building, but not actually show it? For example, I want to put an arch way in the room as if it were connected to something. But, I don't want just a big gaping hole. So is it okay to just build a teeny one by one tile room to in case the arch way?

I decided to give this a go. :) I'm a bit nervous, as all the other entries are just lovely.

For round 1, I was picturing an artsy, bubbly, girly girl type living here. The room is fully play tested, and everything routes just fine. The coffee table is in the corner between the two chairs.

What happened is that I need to go out of town for a week and help perform an audit at one of our other locations. I won't have the time to do the judging on Tuesday and Wednesday as I originally planned. Sent you a PM Reya, basically saying the same thing. Good luck to all of you in the contest!

Thanks laura, it means a lot to me that you don't think I'm crazy. I was a little worried about how people would react to my no edits rule, but I wanted to be as fair to the judges as I could be considering how quickly after the round ends I'd like the scores.

I just looked in my library folder and I think my brain had a minor explosion. I understand there are some programs out there that can let me see what file is what, but as I'm on a mac I believe its safe to say none of those programs will work for me. So I'm afraid I won't be able to give you the library file for it.

I'm really sorry. I'll send you a PM to see if there are any other options but its likely you won't finish in time for the contest so I'll answer your second questions now.

If anyone wants to play along for fun I really can't stop you, nor would I want to. If you want to share your photos with us I just ask that you put the following before your post: "NOT IN CONTEST. PLEASE DON'T JUDGE." So the judges don't wind up doing more work than they need to.

All right this is beginning to get out of hand. You are not understanding what I wrote on day ONE of the contest. You're being insulting, you’re undermining my position as the contest host, and its really hurting my feelings. I started Design This as a fun competition for mod the sims contestants and while I believe I’ve explained this already I will repeat it once more.

Here. It's at the very bottom of the RULES portion of post one:

"- I don’t see this being an issue, but the number of contestants will be capped at 20, first come first serve with no reserved spots. Even if I really really love you."

It's been there since the beginning, and I've also been running down a countdown throughout the competition as people entered and we began filling up the final 10. In fact only a few posts above your own I clearly (and in BOLD font announced the contest as filled.

In your PM to me you say this isn't fair and you're completely off the mark. What you're doing isn't fair and it isn't nice. I've already had to go through telling my closest friend on MTS that it was too late while she was taking the photos for her entry! Now THAT just about left me in tears because I understood how hard she'd been working on her entry and how hurt she was to be excluded. But rules are rules and if I had let her into the competition then THAT would not have been fair to the contestants who carefully read the rules and got their entries in on time.

The timer is irrelevant in your argument. It was there as a "if we do not get 20, this is the deadline" countdown. If I did not make that clear in post one than I'm sorry, but there was plenty of warning basically everywhere else.

To my submission. I have probably too many deco items. Being from a land of little sun, light is important. I'm going for warmth here, as winter approaches.

Just thought of a question; do we get penalised for having MORE than the number of deco items specified? Or is that number a minimum?

Obviously only Reya can really answer this question, but I sent her my scores for the last round yesterday and I didn't penalise people for having more than the 5 required pieces of deco (or more than 4 seats, or more than 1 entertainment item etc). I assumed (and still assume!) that the requirements are a minimum rather than an exact required total :-)

ReyaD
25th Oct 2012, 6:04 PM
Entry Format:
Budget: Photo required. If you have windows, you can use the “print screen” button to take a screenshot. For macs you press Command-Shift-3.

Required Photos:
- 1 overhead (gridlines allowed if you want to merge this one with the budget photo. I don’t mind)
- Minimum 4, Maximum 6 in game photos. (So no grid lines. Does not include the budget and overhead photos)

It's come to my attention that people didn't notice that requirement change. So I'm pointing it out now. Instead of letting the first two entrants edit their entries (and risk having entries 3 and 4 with the same mistake) I'm going to change the minimum number of photos back down to three.

In the following rounds the number of photos required WILL change and if you're above or below you WILL be docked points.

volvenom, your entry is being added now.

Menaceman44 Laura is correct, there's no point deduction for going above and beyond the item requirements. Go wild!

Gothic is really not my style so I don’t have criticism, since I don’t know much about gothic. Layout is good, columns and curtain are very creative. Maybe obelisk red is not going very well with dark red on the walls.

I think that you did an excellent job with this lot. The room looks like it would work well as a living room and the Victorian Gothic theme makes a lot of sense when it comes to incorporating the obelisk and the black wall. Adding a second obelisk was a brave choice but I think you pulled it off! I do think that the patterned wallpaper is a little overpowering and perhaps something simpler would have worked better. Maybe you could’ve used it for a feature wall instead.

I really love how you handled the gothc style, and the way you incorporated pillars into the room was spot on. However I found the wallpaper to be really busy. Maybe next time try something a little less busy for the walls.

It's a very interesting and unique choice for the room design. You've incorporated the black wall with some stone columns, which made it look like it belongs there. The walls are a little dark and the floor CAST'ing choice looks a little off, but in general it's a very nice style

The theme was living room and this is more artist corner then living room. Anyway, I think even it is artist room you could scale down number of pictures on the wall. (there is only seating for two so requirements are 9 points)

I like the colour scheme that you used for your room but I would’ve liked to have seen more turquoise, other than on the walls. Unfortunately you were missing seating for two – you have a loveseat but were meant to have seating for four. Using the obelisk as a centrepiece was a bold idea but I’m afraid it doesn’t work for me – it makes the layout of the room very awkward as it is so close to the loveseat and to me it feels very out of place there.

Using the obelisk as part of an interior pond centerpiece was really unique and i applaud you for that. However placing it in the very middle of the room made the room feel smaller than it already is and makes the playability of it seem awkward. Not to mention the lack of two required seats. Even so the decorative element of the room is great, and I love the easel in the corner.

Very lovely and fresh looking design. I love how you positioned the sofa and rug, the room looks very realistic and cozy. It looks like you forgot to add another 2 seats for the seating for 4 requirement, so the point was taken from there. Otherwise it's a splendid room design with an artistic touch to it

Very good, modern, I like the colors you choose. Two things, maybe its just me but in the living room it is natural that you have coffee table in the front of seating, without it, it look a little empty. By the shape mirror fits perfectly in the room, but style of mirror is not modern like the rest of the furniture. Try not to mix styles next time.

I love your use of colour – the purple and lime accents go well with the black and white and I like the way that they are reflected in the paintings as well as the sofa/rug. Unfortunately they really don’t go with the obelisk, so you tried to hide it behind the fish tank. I can’t imagine anyone having something like that behind an aquarium in real life and it was obviously only there because it had to be rather than because it added to the room, so you missed out on points in the layout and Fun Stuff categories from me because of that.

Great job minding the budget, and can I just say hat the way you incorporated your colours was fantastic! I’m so in love with your rug it’s not even funny. I do however wish you’d incorporated the obelisk more. I like the idea of using it as a backdrop to the fishtank, but the way you incorporated it makes it look more like you were just trying to hide it. The use of the black wall was spot on, and i love the contrast between the white and black for your wall colours. Great job.

A very clever way to hide the obelisk behind the aquarium, you really nailed this requirement The layout made the room look bigger, which is very good and the colour scheme is well executed. I'm really surprised how this luxurious looking room can be under 10k, good job on keeping the budged within the limit. The diagonal wall near the aquarium looks a little empty though

Dont use too much different patterns in one room. Use wall decoration and pictures in the same style as room is. (I think on the blue pictures)

I like the colour scheme here – it is very little old ladyish but there’s nothing wrong with that! I think my grandma would like it. I don’t think that it goes with the black wall and the obelisk though – the colour scheme, objects and layout all go well together with the exception of those things. I think that the room needed more deco/clutter – little old ladies are kind of known for having lots of stuff and you had plenty of money left over to add more items if you’d wanted to!

I LIKE the old lady style. I think it works well with the wall styles you used and the furniture looks great. I think more deco would have really brought the room to life, don’t hesitate to go a little wild with clutter. You can always remove it if you decide its too much. You are however missing a coffee table.

It's a lovely minimalistic design. You managed to keep the budget incredibly low - only little above 5k, great job! The colours are soft and the furniture is well CAST'ed, but the black wall looks a little off compared to the rest of the room.

Try to play a little with colors and use 2 or 3 different ones. I love symmetry, but all room symmetrical is a little too much. Next time try make it less symmetrical and you will see you can get much more interesting creation.

I think that your colour scheme is nice and goes well with the black wall. The obelisk doesn’t look out of place, though I think it would’ve looked better against the wall rather than with a light behind it. It goes fairly well with the rest of the deco but it would’ve been nice if the flowers on it had matched the flowers on the other plants – red would have worked well as an accent colour with your colour scheme. The two identical paintings look odd to me though – who would have two identical paintings in the same room?!

I really adore the simple decor and soft colour scheme. The pink flowers next to the radio bring a bit of light into the room but I think a red colour would have worked better to match the flowers of the obelisk. On that same topic I LOVE what you did to the obelisk, especially when you look at it with the black wall as a background. Gorgeous.

Great choice of wall and furniture colours, I love the luxurious look of the room. The wooden pattern on the floor could be a little more fancy looking, but otherwise the CAST'ing is great. The layout looks a little too symmetrical, so it looks less realistic.

Next time pay attention to the walls and floors. Different wood textures are not always going with each other. Try to play with a cast and see what other combinations you can get.

I like the layout and the colour scheme – I think that the angle between the sofa and the stereo would make for good listening in real life! It looks like it could be used as a real room, which is good. The obelisk does look out of place though, tucked away in a corner like that, and it’s a shame that it’s not integrated in to the room more. I also think that a round rug would have made more sense given the room’s layout – it would’ve really pulled the seating are together.

Can I just say that the diagonal rug has stolen my heart? It’s little details like that that just make me so happy. I really like your walls but I wish you’d done something different with the floors or matched it closer to the wall panelling style. It just looks a little off.

Very cozy and elegant room design. The colours are dark, but mixed with wooden patterns they add more coziness to the atmosphere. The diagonal rug placement is also a nice touch. The walls look a little empty, another painting or a torch light would be nice to add.

If you use black and white you can use more then one color for the accents. I think it would look better if you move coffee table one tile from seating, I'm not sure is it playable now.

I love your colour scheme – having one accent colour works well and it’s very consistent. I think that having the walls and the carpet in white makes them blend together too much though – perhaps some pattern on the walls or a black or grey carpet would’ve helped. The layout makes sense and the obelisk and black wall fit well in the room, though that big rose thing behind the obelisk seems to me to be an unnecessary distraction from the obelisk itself.

The roses are just perfect! I love how you used it to make the obelisk seem planned and using the red throughout the room just brings everything together. Everything matches perfectly and I really have no critiques.

I really like the roses deco part, it made the obelisk look like a planned detail of the main design. You also used a great colour scheme - monochromatic with one bright colour in it, this works wonders with all modern designs. The furniture and CAST'ing looks clean and neat, everything is matched together perfectly. Great job!

You should try to use more light in your rooms. I would suggest using more patterns/colors in the rooms. It is a little unrealistic to have curtain with the same color as the walls.

I was unsure about the column thing around the TV when I saw it on the overhead but on your other pictures I like it and I think it works well. The obelisk makes a good backdrop. I like your colours, but I wasn’t keen on the wallpaper – too busy and too bright for the room in my opinion. I think that the layout works well and makes sense – it looks like a very habitable room.

When I saw the first overhead photo with the columns I was worried it would look terrible but your other photos proved me wrong and I’m so glad they did. I love the colours you picked and the room feels really natural and nice. I’d love to spend time there. However (and I know I’m being really nitpicky here) your lights make me giggle... the cartoon reindeer just doesn’t suit the room.

The whole room looks very well composed, the colour scheme is great and the furniture matches the style. All the little decorations make it look very cozy and realistic I'm not sure about the layout, it looks like some of the objects are placed very close together, which can result in sims getting stuck. Despite that, it's an amazing entry!

Try to take your pictures in live mode. it is a little hard to see your creativity through grid lines.

I like the layout and the colours used in this room. Adding extra accent walls and a second big plant worked well and make the room look more sensible that if it’d just had the one black wall and the obelisk. Great idea! I’m not a fan of the big painting as I don’t think it matches the colour scheme as well as it could – would’ve been nice to see something with some red in it to help pull the room together.

So glad you figured out how to post pictures. I really love the colours you picked for the room and I am SO in love with your seat patterns. The mirrors and paintings you picked look awesome- actually scratch that. ALL the deco looks awesome and I really like how you pulled in the other plants. The obelisk and dark wall look great. Awesome job.

I love the style you chose for the room, it looks like a nice modern lounge for sims to relax The bottle shack is a nice touch too. The menus and notifications hide the portion of the room in all the pictures, so it was hard to see all the details. Besides that - great job!

I like the room layout and think fountain with obelisk is very creative, but I would suggest not use much different patterns with bright colors in the same room. I think obelisk red color and pink carpet clash. Try use colors that go with other colors in the room.

I like the way you incorporated the obelisk here, though I’m not sure fountains make complete sense in a living room! It’s quirky, but I quite like it. I don’t like the wallpaper and the rug though – one or the other would’ve been fine, but the different colours and patterns don’t work well together for me. The wallpaper is also very busy given that it covers such a large area. There doesn’t seem to be much of a colour scheme in the room as a whole, apart from the wallpaper and coffee table, which makes the room seem rather fragmented.

I find the wall pattern to be a bit busy, and it just seems off, even though it matches your coffee table. I love the idea of using the blue but I’m not sure the gold works with it. Using the fountains inside was a really unique idea but I don’t know that it makes sense for the inside of a living room.

What an interesting style - the unusual choice of colours makes it look very unique. I love the little fountains you've incorporated with the obelisk and another black wall is a nice way to make the ""fun part"" work for your room. The lighting could be a little brighter and the walls could be less empty, but in general, it's a very strong and interesting entry

It is nice, pretty and modern. i actually don’t have any criticism here. Good work.

I like the colour scheme and the layout of your room. The green of the plants does seem unnaturally bright, but other than that I thought that your colours worked well and really pulled the room together. I am also uncertain about the rug – I think it’s unnecessarily distracting and takes away attention from other objects. The obelisk and black wall work really well in this room – good job! Oh, and on a random note, for which I did not detract points as it’s just a random thought I had and I feel daft thinking it, does anyone else think that the vase on the coffee table looked kind of ghostly and a bit creepy?

I love how you used the red to pull the room together but I think using red wood for the TV just didn’t work. I’m not sure if you can change the pattern of the TV from wood, but otherwise I would recommend using a more modern looking TV to fit the room, even if it were smaller than the one you have now. I am however madly in love with the use of the bonsai tree. That’s just awesome.

The layout looks great, in terms of sims moving around - it's also well thought through. I like the colour scheme, the red always works well with black and white. The double colored walls is a nice idea, but the cracked paint pattern doesn't mix well with the polished modern look. The red on the carpet is a little too bright, but other than that - great job

Very creative with the windows and doors, and pretty too. Layout is very good, like it is a real living room. Only one thing - try to use more lights in your rooms. you could use lights from buy debug.

I like the layout, apart from the dining chair which looks out of place to me. The colour scheme seems very dark and a bit gloomy and the wallpaper is very busy. The obelisk seems a bit out of place like it’s just been shoved out of the way in a corner – it doesn’t feel like an important part of the room. The black wall fits in alright, but only because the whole room seems quite dark.

I find the wall pattern to be really busy, especially when you look at the couch. The obelisk looks like it was just thrown in there but the coffee table as an ottoman was a brilliant stroke of creative genius. I never would have thought of that.

Wow, you actually added doors and windows and the room looks so realistic! And the coffee table as faux ottoman is a brilliant idea, very creative. The colour scheme is nice, the patterns are neat and the furniture matches the room's style. The lighting could use some work, it's a little too dark in there. Other than that the room is awesome.

Try to use more different colors. I think you should work on a taking photos. Don’t take pictures through flowers or other items.

I like the layout of your room – it looks very playable and makes sense as a cosy real living room as well. I’m not keen on the colour scheme though - all that brown and yellow would be hard on the eyes if you were actually in that room, I think. Your repetition with the black wall works well and helps tie the room together (and it works with your choice of colour scheme) and the obelisk makes sense where it is, though I would’ve liked to have seen it as more of a feature piece in the room.

From what I could see of the room I really like the colours you picked and i think the layout looks very natural and real. However next time please don’t take obstructed photos. They’re creative but they don’t let us enjoy the room.

I like the layout of this room, it's very simple, but well executed. The windows are a great addition to the whole design, they fill up the diagonal walls and make the room look more realistic. The colour scheme has too much orange and brown in it, one or two additional colors mixed up somewhere in the room would be a nice touch. Besides that, the room looks great

pretty and nice. One thing - don’t use tall items in the front of the windows.

I am not remotely a girly girl but I would happily have this room in my house in real life. I like the layout and the colour scheme – the green/pink/red/brown works well in my opinion and the black wall and the obelisk (plus extra obelisk) don’t look out of place amongst the other plants. I’m not keen on the sunflowers and would’ve rather seen an extension of the pink/red used elsewhere as the yellow looks overly bright and out of place to me and is only used for two objects.

I do NOT consider myself a girly girl but if I walked into this room I would giggle like a kid and never want to leave. The furniture you picked was unique and interesting, the decor looks natural and fun, and i love how you used the obelisks. The only critique I can give is that it doesn’t really say “living room” to me.

Oh, where do I begin? The colour scheme - interesting, soft and well matched. Layout - original and creative. The use of obelisk - very nifty, makes it look like it belongs there. I also love the picture wall behind the writing desk. No need to mention the furniture and decorations you chose for this room, they're fabulous. The only thing I'm not sure is the function of the room, it looks more like a hobby/work room than a living room. Besides that - amazing entry!

Try to use colors that go together. Dont use outdoor items inside (topiaries).

I like the idea behind this, the indoor garden concept, but the layout seems a little awkward to me. Having the sundial in the middle of the room between the seating would make conversation difficult. The colour scheme is nice but doesn’t really work with the black wall. The obelisk looks like it’s in its natural setting here, so that works well, but I don’t think that the topiary hedges work indoors – at least not without being made to look like they’re in some kind of pot or raised flower bed. Also, you don’t have the required overhead photo which made it difficult to get a feel for your layout and check that all the required items were present.

I’m afraid you’re missing a proper overhead photo. Try looking at how other people showed their layouts through the overhead photo and if you still have questions ask in the thread. The room itself through is very cute and I like the furniture you picked. I don’t really like how the green carpet looks with the blue walls. Go for something with more of a contrast.

That's a very interesting idea - to turn the living room into an indoor garden, it's great for nature loving sims. The use of green carpet works as grass and the little greenhouses are a nice touch to the design. The obelisk looks very well incorporate in the main style. The layout and colour scheme are a little chaotic, the wall colour doesn't mix well with red and green, but besides that it's a very interesting and unique room

I see you going for eclectic style. Eclectic is a mixture of every style and it is hard make eclectic room which is looking good. I would suggest you next time not to use so many decorative stuff. There are to much things in front of the walls and area in front of the walls looks unaccessible which is not very realistic.

I love the eclecticness of this and I think that the mix of colours works well (and goes with the black wall) but I’m not keen on the layout of the room. There is unnecessary empty space behind most of the furniture that doesn’t seem to fulfil any particular purpose. I think that the room would make more sense with the furniture back against the walls. The obelisk looks OK behind the stereo but the mirror behind it looks odd and out of place – it can’t be seen properly and just distracts from the obelisk itself in my opinion.

Oh man that looks awesome. I love what you did with the radio, I’ve never seen anyone do that before and I think the obelisk looks great where it is. The wall patterns go together great, but I don’t see a coffee table, and the space behind the bookshelf looks a bit awkward.

I love the electric theme of the room, it has so much detail and creativity in it. An interesting use of WA Egyptian props on the black wall and the use of obelisk is very clever. All the decorations look a little chaotic at first, but they create an interesting atmosphere in the room, almost like ""Alice in Wonderland"" I don't see a coffee table in the room and the empty space behind the sofa and bookcase looks a little weird. Besides that - the room is lovely

Try to use furniture in the same style. It seems that modern style coffee table and end table by the wall clash a little.

The layout of your room is nice and looks very practical, both as a sim house and as a real life house. The colour scheme is pleasant, though perhaps a little bland for my taste, and I don’t think that it makes the most of the black wall, which seems out of place. The obelisk works well as a backdrop to the sofa and fits in well with the rest of the room. I’m not keen on the column/archway thing though, it seems unnecessary and rather out of place.

I really love the use of the black wall as a backdrop for the entertainment section and mirror. I do however wish you’d tied it in more with the room. If you’d just CAST the walling to make even just a black band go along the top of the room I think it would have really increased your score. I love how you handed the obelisk too. It looks really nice as a backdrop behind the couch.

What a lovely room - it looks very realistic and comfortable. The colours are matched nicely, I love how the wood on the furniture fits the wood on the door. The walls are CAST'ed nicely too, making the room look more luxurious. The use of obelisk is very clever. The black wall looks a little out of place, but in general, it's a great room

To me wooden floor with lighter wood squares looks a little unrealistic. All that rugs clash and it is too many of them.

I like the layout, though some of the chairs by the TV seem to be facing slightly the wrong way. The room is very busy and cluttered but I think that it works well in this case. I like the colour scheme (and concept) and I reckon that it would be a nice living room for a forest fairy! You did an excellent job incorporating the black wall and the obelisk – they fit well in their surroundings and don’t look the least bit out of place. I would’ve liked to have seen a bit more colour in the form of more flowers though.

Ah! The carpets look so awesome! I really love how unique everything looks and it is just so friggin cool. You really brought the outside in in a way that works so well and you made the fun elements meld into the room so much I didn’t notice them at first. Sometimes thats a bad thing but not this time. Great job.

Oh wow, that's a lot of rugs in one place The style of the room is very cute and interesting, perfect for the fairies. I love how you matched the brown and green colours, they fit the theme nicely. The windows and doors are also a nice addition to the room. The rugs look a little chaotic and the lighting is very dim, but other than that it's an awesome and interesting room

Dont know what to say about this. maybe the colors are to dark and depressive for the living room. I think it is unrealistic to have the same pattern on the rug and sofa.

The layout of your room seems fairly practical but I’m not keen on the colour scheme. The white on the bottom of the walls doesn’t seem to fit with the rest of the room, and neither do some of the paintings. The black wall fits well with the rest of the room though more plants would’ve helped the obelisk look less out of place.

I really like the walling you picked and the colour scheme, everything looks so natural and I’d feel comfortable in that room. However the statues next to the obelisk (and really, just that whole area) look like they belong in a completely different room.

The overhead picture is a little too dark and too small, making it hard to see the details. I like how you used modern touches with a vampire theme, it makes the room look very interesting. The red obelisk fits the room nicely, making it an interesting part of the decorations. I'm not fond of the pattern and colour choice for the sofa and rug, they look a little weird now. The open arch leading outdoors is also a little awkward, but in general, it's a nice and creative entry

I think that light walls and floors really looks good with black and red furniture. Only one suggestion, you should use more furniture, not only required ones.

The layout of your room is simple but sensible. I like most of the colour scheme but the flooring looks out of place to me – the light grey colour is quite bland, especially with the grey/white walls, and it doesn’t show the room off to its best advantage. I’m also not keen on the blandness of the grey bookcase. The obelisk looks OK behind the sofa and the rug helps pull it into the room, but more plants and/or red flower print objects would’ve been even better. As it is it looks almost like two separate spaces – the obelisk/seating/rug area works well together but doesn’t tie in to the rest of the room. The black wall looks good and fits in well with everything else.

I’m not too convinced on the flooring you picked but it really does work well with the room as a whole. The furniture looks great, and I love how you incorporated the rose pattern into the rug. Good job.

I love the simplicity of the design, it has a slight ""grungy"" feel to it. The colour scheme is minimalistic, but well matched. I like the wooden floor and the metal bookcase, they add some variety to the design.

First I want to say thank you to the judges for the feedback and their time. It is really hard to judge so many different styles and tastes. I really appreciate what you are doing to help us all improve and make this contest work!

So, here is my Round 2 entry, Dining/Kitchen. I finished it before I read the judges comments, but having lived with it for a few days, I think I will keep it. I did still include one shot from outside the window...but that is because I really like looking in to windows at night as we drive down the road. It makes the house look homey to me. So, without further ado...oh, wait, one more ado...I also kept to the same basic color palate as the living room cause I pictured them as parts of one big house.

Oh ok, I just don't undestand why no one told me before. Seeing the other entries I thought we just needed a picture with the value...
But then why was my entry accepted, isn't the overhead picture part of the main rules?

The overhead picture is a little too dark and too small, making it hard to see the details.

Sorry about that. ^^; I don't know why it looks like that, maybe it has something to do with the prt sc button, I used it instead of "C" in game. I'll go try to find it a fix for it.

I totally see what you mean about the sofa now.. <w<

Menaceman44: Great kitchen! Adding your round 2 entry to the chart now.

leriety, I accepted your entry because I missed the fact that you were missing the overhead photo the first time I looked over your entry. But when I did notice we were already filling up fast and I thought it would be fairer to you to dock you points that to kick you and risk the contest filling up while you took another photo.

Two questions:
Are we allowed to use the OMSP Resizer?
Can we use the modular seating to go around a dining table? The reason why I ask is because I'm pretty sure they are functional with a coffee table or no table, but when you put it with a dining table they are unable to eat at it. They can however sit at them.

ReyaD
26th Oct 2012, 7:39 PM
Yes you can use the OMSP resizer. Could you link to it here for everyone else? I tried to find it to link to it but MS3B was being slow and I couldn't find it in my internet history.

I really like the idea of using modular seating, but one of the room requirements is for the room to be playable so not being able to use the dining room table would break that rule. Sorry, but thank you for asking.

Some modular seating can be used with dining tables, especially the ones that came with LN.

So both the ones from LN work?

OMSP Resizer (http://mysims3blog.blogspot.com/2012/07/omsp-resizer-by-buhudain.html) You Must have the OMSP installed for this to work, otherwise your game will crash on start up. Please read the mod description for more info.

I'm having a weird problem, my lot is valued 11000 unfurnished
the flooring is worth 4 per tile and the wall covering 5 so that price unfurnished is impossible
do you know what may cause this?

I'm not 100% sure but I think counter tops, cabinets and sinks count toward the unfurnished cost. In the same way that if you moved into an unfurnished house in the US or UK you'd expect the very basics of a fitted kitchen and plumbing items to be included. Possibly light fixtures too (in game).

I had this problem, too. Suddenly my lot jumped from 8,000 to 12,000 out of nowhere. Even after I deleted every item in the room it was still at $6,000.

Unfortunately, my solution was to demolish the lot and then start over again. However, you might want to first try exiting the lot and then reentering to see if it fixes the glitch.

I also had this issue. Another idea, in addition to daluved1's suggestion, might be to save the lot to your bin, bulldoze the old lot, and re-place the furnished lot in your world. That way you wouldn't have to start from scratch, although I'm not certain whether it's going to work or not. I just bulldozed and started over, but I never could get the initial price down to 1,800. It was always at 2,000 for me.

Good luck! :)

Edit: Are the Invisible lights from BuyDebug allowed?

As long as you're only using them to light the room for photos. You must have SOME other lights in the room that would light the room up otherwise.

As for the jump in price, that's just plain bizarre. I've never seen or heard of anything like that happening before. I really don't know a fix for it.

Am I allowed to use a bay window and put deco objects in it? Or would that be too akin to trying to extend the rooms limits or something? Sorry if it's a silly question :)

I've been lucky. My price jump is only $20 (which is still odd, but means I'm just ignoring it - unless I get to the end and discover I need a $20 item ;)) - so $2000 all up with the Fun Item

First off, for the record, I also had the price jump problem show up. I've had that happen before, and I'm not sure why it happens. I wish I had something else to contribute to that! As a result, my plan changed a little, but I think it ended up just as well.

Now, for my entry. This time, I decided to do something for a child. I know, kids can't actually use stoves and the like, but the idea, decor wise, was a kid's playhouse. It's partially inspired by the Simspsons house (another thread on this forum led me to some research in which I discovered there was a real house in Las Vegas that inspired the decor for the Simspsons house).

Anyway, enough blah blah, here we go!

Strange that so many of us experienced the jump in prices! Mine would even change from one moment to the next. :faceslap:

So, I made a 10x10 lot and put a new fresh copy of the room on it and never had a problem after that. My first kitchen was on a larger lot and I think that is what caused some of my problems. I'm sure it is different for everyone!

(Bay window question no longer relevant).

I said I had only had a small jump, but then I had a big jump and even after demolishing everything on the lot it was still thousands of dollars for the empty land. So I started over, decided my idea was too expensive, started again, got to 9995, decided to finish casting later, went to edit town, it jumped to 7880, went in, still that.

So basically I'm really, really confused about where I am in my budget right now.

ReyaD

Okay this value jumping thing is going a little nuts. I'm forced to assume it was my file that somehow screwed things up so while its too late to change anything for this round (almost half of you have already put up your entry) I'll try to fix things for round 3. I'll use a world separate from my build file and see what other changes I can make to make sure there's nothing wrong with the export file. I really am sorry this is happening everyone but I have no idea what might be causing it!

Basically, I say just try your best, if there's absolutely nothing you can do tell us why you've gone over budget and if anyone thinks you would have gone over budget anyway I'll pop into game, check it, and say yay or nay. I'm a little busy this week but it won't take more than 20 minutes to check realistically.

I've actually checked the price of everything and it was around 6000, so having a value of 11000 is still weird.
I'll see if I have a 10x10 lot, I believe my current one is 20x20, though since its empty it shouldn't affect the price in theory

Okay this value jumping thing is going a little nuts. I'm forced to assume it was my file that somehow screwed things up...

Actually, the jump in build prices for a lot of these builds sounds like a common issue where builders get "overcharged" for modular cabinets and seating if you move them around (which I assume a lot of us are doing in a tiny kitchen build, even accidentally, but which didn't really come into play in the living room.) Basically, if you move a modular cabinet and make a corner, and then move it away from the corner, you get charged double or triple. It can add up quickly, especially if you are using expensive cabinetry. However the overage gets refunded if you pop into 'Edit Town' (i.e., what happened to Tamlyn -- the 7880 is what the actual amount of the stuff in the room is; the 9995 included overcharging for cabinetry.)

Here's a thread that explains it: http://www.carls-sims-3-guide.com/forum/index.php/topic,1669.0.html

Of course, if things are not changing when people pop into 'Edit Town' or demolish and replace fresh (without touching the cabinets again) then this is probably not the issue with those particular builds.

Would that be MY magazine default replacement that simply makes the mesh bigger? :) I had that in my round one submission.

Now that people are mentioning a pricing anomoly it does seem that when I place the lots in my game (happened for round one as well) my starting figure is $20 more than the figure stated. Not a big deal really for me though as I haven't exactly been planning to go dead to the limit.
I also thought something was off with my entry this round before I took the pictures. I took the pictures in a different play session to creating the actual build and I think I ended up with a price difference of about $250 between them. I did move the counters around quite a lot before being happy with where they are.

Also, as a side observation, we do all seem to LOVE the new Supernatural 'fridge and cooker don't we?

Judges Note: Okay, so I still was not able to figure out what is causing this strange issue in my game with my sinks to where, instead of snapping to the counters, they just sink to the ground. I had to use an OMSP to shift it up to the counter, but it's not perfect and looks a little strange. I am really sorry about it, but I am still trying to figure out what's causing this glitch.

Can I ask one thing? I'm just curious, is it normal in your country to have wood or carpet in the kitchen or is just how you like to do your sim's house? It really depends on the type of house and personal taste. I would say that most people have either wood or laminate (linoleum) or tiles. I love the idea you have of trying to make a room look like your old house. Just do what feels right and looks realistic to you!

Reya, for the uncluttered counter requirement, does it have to be completely empty? Or does it satisfy the requirement so long as its useable? I have one item on my "uncluttered counter" space, but I play tested the lot and my Sims were still able to work on it. I can remove the object though if that breaks the rules. :)

And about the sinks.. no, it will not latch on to any counter.. regardless to the way the counter is facing.
Wait, so sinks will snap into a corner counter? I tried it before, but I wasn't able to get it to work. Is there some trick I'm missing? Cause that would be a neat feature if so. :)

In Texas, where I live, you usually see wood, tile, stone, or laminate. I personally love wood floors in the kitchen, and my current house has these lovely old pine boards. My mother's house, a historic tudor built in the '30s, also has wood in the kitchen, but my childhood home (a mid-century modern) had tile. It's a toss up as far as I can tell.

My old house was pretty weird, it was small so our kitchen, dining room and living room were in the same room (that's why I put a sofa in there for my entry) we also had a computer but we couldn't fit a desk so it was placed on a kitchen counter with the keyboard in a drawer. XD

Thanks, Reya! That's good to know. :)

My round 2 entry started out as a rustic, cabin-style kitchen, but it morphed into a kitschy, vintage-y kind of room with a slight '50s flair. The patterns on the curtains and on one of the coats are from Camille's Cath Kidston collection and can be downloaded here (http://www.camillecc.com/2011/04/15/ck-patterns/). Also, I play tested the room, and everything works fine.

Sorry, Buckley but it looks like you'll be losing some points too: "I've given you a door! A very ugly, basic door. Don't freak out, you are allowed to CAST it, but you are NOT allowed to move it."

If anyone spots a rule or requirement I have missed with my entry then PLEASE point it out to me! I'm feeling like a bit of an ogre pointing these things out but I have a sort of OCD tendancy that won't let me stay quiet about them.

Lasira: For this entry I decided to depart from the spartan hotel suite design which didn't favor well and go for a little more custom feel. Not sure which look this lends towards but overall I was pleased with it.

That and changing the look of this challenge 5x and spending more then two days tells me I'm probably not going to get this any better then it is.

The island counters? Yes, Sims can cook on those. I have a Sim that until recently had no empty counters other than island counters and he used them fine.

I tend not to use those because I've never seen one in RL, the premade houses that have those also have normal counters and sims usually take the one closer to the fridge. Good to know though.

Hi, lereity -- I'm glad someone answered you about the light over the stove. I just wanted to add, about kitchen floors in my country (the US): that from what I know from places I've lived, it really varies by region, and by the age or location of the house. In tropical areas like Florida and parts of California, almost every room in the house will have tile floors like you say is common where you are. In the rest of the country it really varies depending on how old the property is, what style it is, how expensive it is, and whether the owners/builders were trying to recreate a specific historical style, just wanted something easy to clean or had some other consideration in mind... it can really be just about anything, partly because the US has such a varied climate and such varied resources/history depending on where you live.

Anyway, not just in Florida, but in of all the places I've lived outside the US, it seems to me that the hotter the climate, the more likely it is to have stone and tile everywhere. My houses in Yemen, Pakistan and a couple of countries in Africa were all stone and tile, in every room. But in Nepal and Poland and Germany, they were wood in most of the rooms, and stone/tile in rooms that might have water or insects in them, like the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

I think that last combination (of putting wood on the floors in most of the house, but putting tile in the kitchens and bathrooms) is very common in a lot of the housing from the late 20th century in the northern US as well, because it's easy to maintain. But "old-fashioned" hardwood floors are very popular again, even in the kitchen and bathrooms. (They're so popular, in fact, that a bunch of tile companies make tile that looks like hardwood flooring, so you can have a floor that looks like wood but doesn't get damaged by water.)

Anyway, that is just my anecdotal opinion, and probably more than you wanted to hear from me. :)

I will note that part of the reason you're probably seeing so many wooden floors in this contest from those of us in the US -- even though there are so many different styles in the US -- is that the cheapest wooden floors in the Sims 3 are free. :)

No, sionelle, you didn't give too much info! It was perfect! :gjob:

I do want to add that if you use the white carpet for your floors, you can "paint" them in new and different ways. Just be sure that you only use one white carpet tile for each room to recolor specific for that portion of the room. That way you will not be recoloring the whole floor in one shot! (I think I learned this from Flabaliki)

As Menaceman said they are usable. The floor is a pattern. It's in the tile section, and I believe it's custom.

29th Oct 2012, 4:33 PM
The floor I used in my entry is actually a casted carpet, I didn't notice there were free ones. I originally wanted to use a nice default one but it was 20 per tile.

My mom likes to see those tv shows about house decorating and I've actually seen in there the fake wooden floor you mentioned. It's becoming more popular to have wooden floors because it gives a modern look, but most old houses will have tiles. My old house was actually an ex barn. I'd like to have a wooden floor in my house, but mostly because stone feels colder than wood.
One thing architects always want to change about these old houses is that every room has a different floor, still tiles but all different, two rooms in my house have the same floor style in different colors (well, different, one's yellow and the other orange XD).

My sister lives in the UK and told me they have carpet everywhere, even in the kitchen, it's cold up there maybe your theory is right. When she calls home she always say it's rainy, it's grey and cold.

I live in the UK, and as I'm currently sat in my flat being cold and listening to the rain I can't really argue with that! The weather can be nice though, I guess it depends on what you're used to! I've never seen anywhere with carpet in the kitchen, I don't think, but I have seen lots of houses with carpeted bathrooms, which I think is rather unhygienic! My kitchen (and bathroom) has a linoleum floor with a pattern that looks like tiles, the living room, bedrooms and hallways are carpeted. Carpet is much warmer, I think.

I am enjoying looking at everyone's rooms so far! :-)

I'm in Canada, not that that matters much, but as said before, it varies, there's fake wood floors in my mother's kitchen, and where I am now, we have linoleum flooring in the kitchen. Personally, I prefer actual tile (except in the winter when the floors are freezing cold) compared to anything else.

My grandma used to have a carpeted kitchen but I can't say I've seen one since. We also used to have a carpeted bathroom and toilet in our previous house. Was lovely and warm to step on when getting out of the bath or shower but I will agree on the hygiene issue.
The house we live in now is mostly carpeted except for the kitchen and bathroom floors which are tiled.
This is in the UK by the way.

Here up north it's very humid and cold. Kitchen's tend to have stone or tile, Some time in the 80's wall-to-wall carpets was the thing to have, but we don't have housewife's in this country who thinks it's ok to lay on all 4 scrubbing a carpet clean. So they are usually replaced now. These days most people want wood or linolium, because it's warmer in the winter, or tile/stone if they have lots of loose carpets on it. Bathrooms is recommended tile, kitchen too really, but bathrooms shouldn't be anything else than tile.

So, I must ask: do our room set-ups have to be sim-functional?

If not that opens a lot of possibilities then for later rounds.

They must be functional. However I sort of need to stand up for Tamlyn here. I also sometimes use diagonal placement counters in my kitchens and when I play test those houses my sims just automatically use the "unblocked" counters. (I.e: The one where she has the plate of spaghetti).

Admittedly, I only playtest for an in-game day which means maybe one or two meals in my lots that have had those kinds of counters. I've never had any routing issues with them, but if anyone actually has had routing issues from diagonal counters + standard counters as in Tamlyn's design (This does not mean people who think there might be routing issues just from looking at the pictures) please tell me.

leriety
1st Nov 2012, 12:30 AM
was it placed with moveobjects? one counter has objects on it but sims may try to use the other one to cook...
it also looks a little weird because of the drawers cutted in half and one is actually halfway into the stove and I wonder if they can use the oven
another thing that bugs me is why put the smoke detector near the pet bowls, I would have put it on the wall over the sink personally
and I also don't understand why two bins, if the sim was meant to recycle trash I would have placed three of the smaller one in different colors.

I'm not an expert so I may be wrong, hope no one's offended by this :)

kadience

I do that all the time with counters in my game, it's never caused any routing issues for me. My sims just use a different counter.

Tamlyn, great job on doing something different from the other entires. :)

sionelle
1st Nov 2012, 4:01 AM
I use diagonal counters all the time too, so just for fun I rebuilt Tamlyn's basic arrangement, complete with deco items and microwave on the counters. My Sim cooked three meals, put the leftovers away, cleaned the stove, washed the dishes, and cooked three more meals, with no routing problems. Even when the cat jumped on the counter in the middle of cooking the first meal of the second batch of three, she just shifted to putting the completed meals on the dining room table instead of the one remaining empty counter, and went right on to cooking the next meal.

So in my non-judge-like opinion :), I don't think there's a problem with the routing.

Very creative, Tamlyn!

I obviously haven't been on the forums since I posted, but thanks to everyone else for answering. I did test everything, including the stove and counters and all to make sure the setup worked.

leriety, that is both my practical side and my... Australian side(?) kicking in. For me, putting a smoke alarm right next to/above a stove is silly. It'd go off if you boiled water! (However... it's sillier to put it in the bedroom, like it is in my actual house. Wtf?) As for the bins, where I live we have rubbish (which is... you know.. rubbish stuff *vague*) and recycling (bottles, paper, etc). Small bins inside and big bins outside. Not having a bin bin and a recycle bin is strange to me. (My recycling bin is a old wine box, to show how classy I am. My bin bin is bright pink.) Sims don't really do things practically, but some habits are hard to break ;) The cutting can look strange with the drawers, but I chose to accept that flaw in order to set things up like that. Others might not :)

leriety
1st Nov 2012, 2:54 PM
I actually do have separate bins for normal stuff and for recycling in my house (even my school started to do that), what I said was more sims related than realistical. For what I've seen sims don't really use the different bins differently...
We actually have bought a thing almost as tall as the fridge wich has three removable bins inside for paper, plastic and glass/aluminum. The school use a thing that looks like plastic shopping bags but it still serve the purpose. Here is common to have three for recycle. We actually also have a fourth bin for random stuff and a fifth for kitchen scraps, but those are hidden under the sink.

My house does not have smoke alarms so when I do sim's houses I just do what's more practical for playing I suppose. Maybe who did your house was concerned about people not noticing smoke while asleep.

daluved1
1st Nov 2012, 3:28 PM
Well, I can only speak for my game, but the diagonal counters make my sims angry. Awesims uses them a lot in her houses and I ultimately end up having to remove them. But maybe I didn't have enough free counters for them to use or something.

Anyhoos, carry on. I got the answer I needed. :)

I'm enjoying the conversation about flooring, I'm sorry I missed it. I was so busy with my other contest entry, I kind of stayed away from here.

Anyway, there are certain woods that are ok to use even in humid areas of the house, though they tend to be more expensive. Honestly, the use of tile in kitchens and even in bathrooms is relatively recent. Tile used to be pretty expensive (at least in North America, where trees are plentiful, relatively speaking). Bamboo is also gaining popularity all over the house. And think of those saunas" they always have wood in them, as well. Hardwoods are generally fine in the kitchen.

The bathroom requires a little more care, because water really does tend to sit there, plus it's a humid environment. Cedar, teak, some of the harder woods are fine. But as Sionelle pointed out, the new in thing is to have wood-grain tile (http://www.woodgraintile.com/) in those rooms. You should check it out, it looks really good.

Volvenom
3rd Nov 2012, 9:58 AM
I don't like faking it! LOL, just kidding.

Tiles being recent I agree on. Stone and earth may have been used up here though. After all they didn't even have a fixed bath up here in the old days. It all comes down to what age we're talking about :) If you don't have a fixed bath, you can just clean up the mess and the problem is gone.

Waiting for new room.

I'm not sure what you mean with recent but even my great-grandmother house in the countryside had tiles in every room, and a nice fruit garden... too bad there are apartments there now.
Can it be just my country? I looked online and apparently Italy and Spain are famous for ceramic tiles

It's normal to have a lower temperature inside if the house is made of bricks, my house inside has about 10°C less from outside, but I don't think it depends on the type of flooring

sionelle
3rd Nov 2012, 3:56 PM
Hi, lereity -- it's not just your country. Turkey and the Netherlands (among other places) are also famous for tiles and have used them in building for centuries. The problem in this particular discussion is that it's really hard for any of us to say "this is what it's like in North America" (or even "this is what it's like in the US") because the country and the continent are too big and varied to do that. :) For example, in Mexico and the southwestern US there is a wonderful, longstanding local tradition of beautiful, ornate tilework from the late 1500s onward. That's mostly a result of Spanish colonization, but also partly from a tradition of terracotta work done by the indigenous population before any Europeans ever showed up.

In the northern, mid-Western part of North America, where I'm from, "recent" likely means the rise of tile's popularity in the late 1800s and early 1900s. So that's relatively recent compared to Italian tiles dating back centuries, or Turkish tiles dating back to the 1100s, or Dutch tiles from the 1500s, but it's not like we're talking about the 1970s or something. :)

Prior to the "recent" Victorian period, tile was imported, expensive, and too "fancy" or delicate for flooring in this area. But from about the 1870s onward, tile started to become more popular due to more factories being built that used mass production techniques to make tile cheaper, more durable and more readily available for people, and also because of the increased number of dedicated bathrooms in that time period, as Volvenom pointed out. In Chicago, for example, there are a lot of beautiful old tile walls and floors from around the 1880s. A lot of the city's old wooden buildings were destroyed in a huge fire in 1871 and when they were rebuilt, they were rebuilt with a lot of tile. Chicago is a big manufacturing city with a lot of nearby limestone, and there were plenty of tile producers around.

So in my opinion, I think it all comes back to what's available, what's practical for the room/house/climate, and what's cheap/expensive. Now that tile manufacturing, lumber milling, laminate flooring, stone work, carpeting, brick, etc are all relatively easily available, and relatively similar in price, and now that most homes are airconditioned and/or heated, I think it's just a matter of taste and of practicality versus fashion.

Anyway, I really need to stop rambling on about construction materials, before you all think I am an insufferable bore with no life. (Though it might be true...) :)

my great-granmother was born in 18-something (don't really know the exact year), I guess that can be considered late 1800. I could only meet her a couple times, she was already 90 y.o.

This is really interesting, growing up around tiles sort of made me believe everyone had those. I saw the other type of flooring by watching tv shows about redecoration, I've seen carpeted floors in hotels but I don't think I've seen a wooden one. Wooden floors looks nice and it's also warmer than tile, I'd like to have it in my house but I'm so attached to my tiles that I don't know if I can bring myself to take it out.

It's normal to have a lower temperature inside if the house is made of bricks, my house inside has about 10°C less from outside, but I don't think it depends on the type of flooring

Actually I'm fairly sure it does. Like in Norway many have started using fireplaces of a perticular kind of stone because it stores heat. How heat and air distributes and stores in materials is pretty important. In more southern parts of the world you can live with lower temperatures inside, because heating is expensive and wood is scares. We have lots of heat from waterfalls, advantage of our wet climate, and we have lots of woods. We also wouldn't survive with colder inside than out.

How houses are made is also important. Have seen lots of programs with that Kevin McClouds or what he's called. He makes a big point out of tripple glasing windows.

It's fairly complicated calculations. Some new houses up here hardly need heating at all, because of all the isolation around. If people have tiles around me, it's usually because of underfloor heating.

We could have this discussion for ages.

Ha ha, jones7659, I wish I were an architect!

(Seriously, I often think I should have studied something more creative in college, and I love architecture.) But I did study history, and so that's where most of my vat of "useless knowledge" comes from.

This is a fun discussion -- I wonder what the next room will inspire us to talk about. When big windows became popular/possible? When fireplaces went in and out of vogue? Who invented shag carpet, and what were they smoking at the time? ;)

Hey guuuuuys

ROUND TWO IS NOW OVER! Scores will be up within 48 hours or so (Come on people, judges are humans too). If there are any delays I will keep you all updated. Thanks for joining this wild ride, and I can’t wait to see what you give me for this next round.

First post has been updated (http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=488949&c=1&ht=&page=1&pp=25#startcomment)

And I really do apologize for not having the round up last night, but when I got home I literally passed out on my bed and didn't wake up until about an hour ago. I've set up the next round to end Monday November 12th, at one second to midnight. I've done this so that if the round ends early (say, on the weekend) I have plenty of time to post round 4, and if the round goes until the last day I don't have class until 4 on Tuesday so I can stay up late waiting for post round 4.

Good luck to everyone!

Oh god. XD I hate doing nurseries so much.

Question though. It says you can use print screen to take screenshots, but when I do that it makes everything dark and I think I got points docked for that last time. So.. Is it okay if I *just* screenshot the price? I'll still do a normal overhead price, but just the price will be a separate screenshot.
I think you can fix the dark problem thingy by having it in windowed mode, but my computer freezes when I have it in windowed mode. ^^;

I think a few people did that in round 1, Stardust so I'll allow it. I'm trusting you not to- holy crap I forgot a budget. I shall go edit that in...

"You’re stuck with it where it is so good luck with that."

Thanks. Thanks a lot. :P

BTW, the $8000 includes the cost of the lot, right? And I assume the pre-covered walls must stay the same, or... (I didn't see anything about that, but then maybe I was too busy being ... outraged? LOL)

I don't have my game in English so I need an explanation on this: Peg toybox. I assume the buildingblocks table is the table they use for Lego and drawing?

Oh holy crap, I don't need to keep that ugly wallpaper?

xD I forgot I put wall paper. (I made all the lots at the beginning of round 1) But yes, you may change the wall paper and flooring. Sorry for the misunderstanding!

Building blocks table = Lego and drawing thing.

Pey toy box = The logic game, putting the circle/square/triangle into the right slot.

IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE ORIGINAL ROUND THREE LOT IS MESSED UP. Somehow some other objects or... something managed to latch onto it. I don't know how it happened or what latched onto it or even if its harmful but just in case I've switched out the original lot 3 with a cleaned version. Thanks to Solventpost for pointing it out to me, and I am so sorry it happened.

Yea, it's a sims3pack with no description in Custard.

I downloaded the file before you fixed it, I've already started decorating the room, what problem does it have?

I'm honestly not sure. Sloventpost pointed it out and showed that a few files had attached themselves to the simpack, but I have no idea if they're benevolent or other.

I didn't think the fence was bad at all. I mean, it could have been much worse... At least it's a neutral color. :)

Leriety, the file had a sims3pack attached to it, so if you installed the lot without running it through custard you probably installed an extra sims3pack as well. Now, I'm no expert at this stuff, but I opened it up in s3pe and it appears to be a roof by Pralinesims. You might be able to weed it out and uninstall it through the launcher, but I'm not really sure.

I love nurseries :) I've "finished" it already, but I may still tweak it a bit. And I don't think the fence is that bad either. I just ran with it...;)

Roofs are often default, that's probably why it attached itself to the room, because of the autoroof thing :faceslap: Getting rid of it will not be that easy.

Note to self: Remake final two rooms and make sure to turn auto roof OFF before you rebuild.

I checked my mods and downloads folder and there's nothing strange there, not even in the launcher
I don't know what custard is, I just installed it with the launcher

My nursery isn't even half done, I just picked out the stuff I need in there and I'm trying to figure how to place them...

Ah, but if it is a roof texture or terrain paint it won't show up in the Launcher as there is no catagory for them so the launcher doesn't attempt to show them even if they are installed.
There won't be any seperate file in the Downloads folder either because, if anything had attached itself to the lot, it would be included in the same Sims3pack, not a seperate one.
CUSTARD is a tool created by Delphy to allow players to look inside Sims3pack files before installing them to see what is included and to be able to clear out anything unwanted, such as extra CC that may have piggybacked its way in.

I do actually know of a way to uninstall Sims3pack terrain paints as I worked it out myself when I uninstalled the St Claire world from AweSims and it left 5 behind in my game. I need to write up a tutorial for it so others can do it too if need be.
I have no idea where I am supposed to submit tutorials though.

It was a good idea to use a new game profile then, it's not a big problem for me as I can always delete it when the contest is finished

I started building a house today and the autoroof popped up as a kind of shining light orange/mediterrainean color. Nothing EA, and I have lots of CC roof. I was very careful not to install any of those previously.

Menaceman: I think it installs in the BCor DCC folders somewhere. DCC probably, if you know how to find it there I would like to know please, great.
Buckley: I would like to know how you find a sims3pack with s3pe. I haven't got there yet.

It will go into both the DCBackup and DCCache folders but removing it from the DCBackup folder will not remove it from your game and the DCCache files can only be opened with s3pe and even then, you can't remove individual items that way.
I did it using a convoluted method making use of the TSR Launcher.
I'll try and get it written up this week and made available somewhere.
