Sunset Valley Home Makeover Contest

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/56123_140427123148Screenshot-11.jpg

Qualifications to Host:

Judged in “Groundwork: A TS3 Foundation Challenge”, participant in “Build a Business”.

Concept:
Similar to The Sims 2 counterpart, four families are moving to Sunset Valley that need their home decorated for them within their limited budget.

Rules:

Each round you need to post at least ten pictures of the home you redecorated. You may take no more than fifteen however, and please keep all but your first picture underneath the “spoiler tag.” It’s also required that you include a shot of the lot value somewhere in one of your pictures; this can be cut and pasted, if you wish.
• This is a Sims 3 contest only
• Only free custom content. Content that you paid for from the official "Sims 3 Store" may be used, however.
• Pictures should be large and clear within MTS guidelines.
• Photoshopping is prohibited. This is a decorating focused challenged, not a photography one.
• Exterior or interior walls may not be changed. However, adding or removing half walls or stages is permitted.
• Doors and windows can be replaced but not moved or deleted. For example, if you have a one tile window, it can only be replaced by a different one tile window in the same spot. Same applies to doors.
• The same applies to stairs; they can be replaced but not moved or deleted. They may be added, however.
• Adding and removing fencing is permitted.
• Pools can be added or removed. Remember, there is a budget and adding pools can be very expensive.
• Only the texture and slope/height of the roof may be changed.
• Editing the terrain is permitted. You may also add plants and rocks. Reasonably sized ponds may be added, as well.
• Driveways may be added, garages are may not.
• You can add a fireplace, but moving or deleting an existing one is prohibited.
• No changes may be made to foundation
• Columns may be replaced with a different one, but not deleted. They may be added, however.

Requirements:
• All skill levels are welcome, including beginners.
• Commitment; please don’t sign up for Round 1 if you know you won’t be able to follow through until the end. There are limited spots available, please leave them to those that really want them.
• A basic knowledge of taking good in-game photos.

Timeline:

Each round is two weeks. The next round will start within 48 hours of the end of the last one. Judges are expected to have their scores within 72 hours of the end of the round.
Submissions will be accepted until the next round ends; you will be docked 1 point for each day you’re late.

Judges:

Although we have three judges, I'll still accept an emergency judge at any point just to be safe.

Scoring:

Total Score: 20 points X 3 judges = 60 points (65 with bonus room)
• Decorating - 10 points: Is everything decorated well, overall? Does the color palette make sense? Does the overall design flow nicely?
• Suitable for family – 5 points: Does this fit what the family asked for? Is there enough space for everyone? Does it represent their style well?
• Furniture Placement – 5 points: Can Sims walk through this home well? Is it livable for a Sim family? Is the furniture placed nicely?

Bonus Room – 5 points: If you can accommodate the “bonus room” you will receive five extra points on the total score.

Budget - One point will be taken off the total score for every $1,000 over budget.

The budget total is whatever the original "Unfurnished" price is, plus whatever money is allotted to them.

For example:

Taking Round 1, which unfurnished is $17,869 plus the Smith's family budget of $55,000 means that the end furnished value can be no more than $72,869.

I hope that makes sense.

You also will be docked 1 point for each place a rule is broken. These include:

• Changing walls
• Deleting or moving fireplaces
• Adding, moving, or deleting doors, windows, or foundation
• Changing anything other than the roof’s texture or height/slope

The Families:

The Smith Family – Budget – $55,000 John and Jenny are convinced that their soulmates and couldn’t be closer together. As newlyweds they don’t need much space as it will only be the two of them. They love the idea of a traditional, cozy home.

Bonus room: Jenny has been feeling kind of nauseous lately, could she be pregnant? Create a nursery for a baby for the bonus room.

The Martinez Family - Budget - $75,000 - The Martinez are a big family! Juan and Maria have two kids and with another one on the way, they’re certainly going to need a new house. They have a teenage son as well as a nine year old daughter. The Martinez family would like a taste of home in their house, so they have requested a Spanish themed home.

Bonus room: Turns out that Maria is having twins! Accommodate a twin sized nursery.

The Adams Family – Budget - $65,000 – The Adams are a pale couple with an… “alternative” teenage daughter. They love everything dark and gothic, so make sure to include that theme in their home.

Bonus room: Are the Adams vampires? Include a dark lair that could include… a coffin, perhaps?

The Anderson-Miller Family – Budget – $70,000 Dirk and John are an unlikely couple but they’re certainly in love, they even adopted their darling daughter Kelly two years ago. Dirk loves sports and the gym while John would prefer to snuggle up with a good book. One thing that they can agree on though, is that they love modern architecture almost as much as they love their toddler daughter.

Bonus room: Create a library/den for John to escape his hectic life, and find some tranquility in his favorite literature.

Contestants:

Since the judges can only score so much there will be limited space. I'll accept up to 25 contestants.

How to apply:

Download the Round 1 file and choose a family. Decorate to your hearts content. Then, when you're done, post between ten and fifteen of your best pictures here under spoiler tags. Make sure at least one is an overhead shot or "bird's eye view."

Other notes:

The Round files will always be up to the latest patch, 1.67 I believe.

On installing library files, a blurb from heaven in the "Trading Spaces - TS2/TS3" contest forum.

TS3 Library Files:
Library files are a great way of sharing your lot. When you save a lot to the bin, the game creates a package file in your Library folder. Of course, it gives it a really random name of a string of letters and numbers so make sure to check your Library folder after saving it (sort by date created to make things easier) and rename the file right away so you remember which one it is! You can share this lot, just like you would a sims3pack. The downloader would just install the lot by placing the file in their Library folder, rather than installing a sims3pack through the launcher. These files are great for a couple of reasons: 1) no launcher (for sure!), 2) less chance of rogue CC attaching and 3) for library files, patch level doesn't matter. So, someone at patch 1.67 could give me a lot that I, at patch 1.63, could install without an issue. If anyone is concerned or wary of joining this contest due to not being fully patched, library files should allow you to join just fine!

I'd like to ask that everyone competing on the TS3 side include your library file, instead of or along with the sims3pack from here on out. If you've already uploaded a shell, please just hang on to that library file, on the off chance that your partner might need them. This will make getting participants a little easier. I've personally refused to patch to 1.67 (RIMP (rest in modding peace) twallan) and I would hate to be restricted from participating, if I had the time, just because of my patch level.

BlakeS5678, I've downloaded the file and opened the zipped file as usual and put in my Sims 3 library, but it doesn't show up when I go into game  I'm not sure why as the file shows in the library when I look in my documents?

(*silently cheers about first post*)

Hm, I'm not sure why that would happen. Try restarting the game perhaps? In any case, would it be possible for you to create a new Sunset Valley world? You can find the lot that way and it'll work just the same. I really hope your problem is quickly resolved. :) Always feel free to ask me more questions.

Edit: Oh, and on another note, I'm still looking for judges. I don't bite, I promise! ;)

I just remembered is budget the cost of the house and furniture or just furniture

Edit: Put that in the original post for clarification.

Yes, that would be fine.

Edited: Added that to the first post, thanks for pointing that out. :)

I've actually never participated in anything on this site, but, this is so interesting. And seeing as I've been wanting to expand my decorating abilitys in TS3, I'll give this a go!

Could you clarify how the family selection works? Do we stick with the same family throughout the contest?

:) (And if this was already covered in the OP and I just missed it, then apologies for being an idiot :p)

Oh fun! I don't mind losing horribly, so I might give this a whirl.

One quick question though: I know that modifying the placement of existing columns and stairs is prohibited, but is placing additional stairs and columns allowed?

Could you clarify how the family selection works? Do we stick with the same family throughout the contest?

:) (And if this was already covered in the OP and I just missed it, then apologies for being an idiot :p)

You choose a different family each round. Each round you'll be given a different house to redecorate, so at the end you'll have redecorated four different homes for four different families. :)

One quick question though: I know that modifying the placement of existing columns and stairs is prohibited, but is placing additional stairs and columns allowed?

Hm. This is always tough for me as I want to find a balance with creativity and difficulty in this challenge. I'm going to be lenient and say yes on this one though, as long as you don't delete the ones that were originally there. :)

Hello everyone! I want to ask - how about fences? Can we build it or not? ( sorry for my English) :)

You can do whatever you want with fences. You may delete, change, add, and lick them. ;)

Can I be a judge? I already judged in Design This - An Interior Design Contest. Some of the pictures of my decorating abilities under the spoiler

Of course. I'd love to have you. :D Especially since you have experience with a similar contest.

I think you'll find HP's thread here (http://modthesims.info/t/330419) to be very helpful.

The spoiler tag is (spoiler) Put picture text here (/spoiler). Except you use [ ] instead of parenthesis.

*Of course you can change the furniture. How else could you redecorate? :anime:

*No, you may not add an additional room as editing walls is not permitted. Well, technically you could, but you would be docked points for breaking the rules.

If there's any space left, I'd like to try this - I've not done any decorating challenges before, and would really like to give it a go over the summer, while I have time. Just a quick question - I take it that if you get through Round 1, you then go on to decorate another family's home for Round 2, etc etc?

I'm not sure why that's occurring unless you're putting the house on a larger lot than what's necessary. If you have a Sunset Valley save you can use the "El Urban Sprawl" that is already placed.

I just have one question (and it's because english isn't my first language): it's allowed to recolour the walls? Or when you say "you may not change the walls" you mean "no moving, adding, deleting, and recolouring walls"?

Well, here we go...

http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/9/1/1/8/5/9/MTS_cutsocks-1439007-FFfront.jpg

This is an exciting and dramatic make-over for the Anderson-Miller family. I felt this home had a great deal of potential to fit in with their like of a more modern design scheme. Architecturally, El Urban Sprawl had a few issues, some major, some just inconvenient. Most noticeable was the drab facade, broken up only by two measly windows and a skimpy porch--all oppressed by a way-too-simple roof. Then the home is rather small, on a large, underutilized lot...

Some fences fix the porch, and nothing fixes drab better than some Bright and Busy®. More substantial columns in a vibrant hue pop against the new dark, neutral clad walls. The back wall of the porch (slightly expanded into one of the parking spots for better balance) has been treated with a mural of squares fading from dark to light (the Busy) .
http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/9/1/1/8/5/9/MTS_cutsocks-1439008-FFFroof.jpg
While a small home easily be cozy and intimate, the large yard has be drastically transformed with THE POWER OF FENCES!!! Fences define the outdoor areas on the ground and above, used to make elaborate trellis "roofs" that mimic the newly pitched roof of the home, (Light poles simulate columns (custom set to off), as well a matching columns from the front (on those $2000 pedestal thingies to suggest a foundation.) A workout space for Dirk is under the pyramidal trellis. A pool, outdoor dining, and lush landscaping round out the exterior.

http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/9/1/1/8/5/9/MTS_cutsocks-1439011-FFpatio.jpg

As any typical designer would propose, the modifications come in just shy of the max. ( $86,213 of $87,869 (house cost of $17,869 plus the Anderson-Miller's $70,000)
http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/9/1/1/8/5/9/MTS_cutsocks-1439012-FFfloorplan.jpg

The awkward location of the front door left the layout mostly the same. A cozy library/reading area for John was squeezed in past the kitchen, without losing any openness.. The living room, kitchen, and den are sleek and efficient, modern twinged with retro. Accent colors carry from the outside in.

http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/9/1/1/8/5/9/MTS_cutsocks-1439019-FFbath.jpg

The bedrooms break with the scheme of the rest of the house for colors and styles individualized for their occupants.

Dirk, John, and Kelly (or at least my versions thereof) graciously tested El Urban Sprawl Fantastic Fencery! They were included in the photos to better display how the spaces were catered to their needs.

Two Store items, a window and a wall-hanging, were used. The vehicle in the photos was not included in the price.

Oh, yay! The first official entry, I just added you to the table, cutsocks. Seeing as how cutsocks followed all the rules and guidelines down to the 't' (adding your vision of the family isn't necessary, but is certainly a nice touch.) I would encourage others to perhaps use his as a guideline.

*Make sure you have included which family you're doing
*Include a a snippet picture of the furnished/unfurnished value of the home when you've finished.
*Talk about what the original cost was and what the family's budget was to save a lot of time for both me and the judges.

If you'd like you can also talk about what was easy/difficult decorating this home, as well as what you're vision is/what you're going for, so the judges can look for that. Referencing to the family's needs to explain why this is here, or that looks this way certainly can't hurt.

Very well done, cutsocks. I'm impressed. ;)

Can I ask what the download file does? I've d/loaded and installed, but I also can't seem to see any difference in my game like a copy of the lot to use in my library, or a family to give me information on their tastes? I've decorated a lot for the Smith family, but I want to make sure I've got it all right before I put up my entry! :)
And also - is it ok to get other people's opinions from other websites (like Ts3 Creator's Consortium) on my attempt before I post it up? Obviously not if they're judging, but just other simmers? (just wanted to check before I post piccies up there!) And it would be just getting their opinions, and either acting on it or not, by myself.

I'm interested in this challenge, but I might not be able to complete all of the rounds since I'm going to be away from my Sims 3 Computer for most of July. When will the second round be over?

Following the timeline, the entire second and third round will take place in July, leaving the fourth and final round for the beginning of August. The entire contest should completed by my mid-August if everything goes according to plan. If you know that you will most likely not be able to compete in all four rounds, I would like to remind you to be considerate of other contestants as there is a limited amount of room and it's simply not fair to those that are willing to commit to the entirety of the contest.

That being said, we would love to have you as a (non-scored) play along. :)

I think that the reason the lot won't show up in our games is because it's a .package instead of a .sims3pack
I installed it like I should a .package because it isn't a sims3pack so I can't double-click to install it. I went into my game and it wasn't showing up.
This seems interesting! I've been waiting ages for a contest to open and I think this is the one I've been waiting for (even though Sims 3 isn't my preferred game)!

I don't think there is a fix other than to get a new file from Blake. I suppose your best option is to just use the lot in SV. (Make it a separate save and it shouldn't affect your current towns?)

Print screen will be your friend ;) Hit print screen while you have The Sims 3 open and the ctrl+v in Microsoft Paint. Then select only the box where it displays the Furnished/Unfurnished and and copy that with ctrl+c and paste it on top of one of your other pictures with ctrl+v.

Either in the game settings or the faster way: Open the cheat bar (cntl+shift+c) and just enter "fullscreen" without the quotation marks.

Also, @BlakeS5678 There's a 50/50 chance that I'll get approved for my Internship. If that's the case, I'm busy all of July, and wouldn't be able to judge :\

El Urban Sprawl was the perfect place to John and Jenny Smith to start their new lives together. Once it had been redecorated of course!

The newlyweds prefer a style that is contemporary but still feels cosy and homely and so they opted for earthy tones throughout the living space. Of course John wouldn't be content without a nice big sofa and TV to boot! Jenny didn't mind so long as she had her family dining space and a study area for work.http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439221-Screenshot-93.jpg http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439222-Screenshot-94.jpg
Both John and Jenny love gardening so a beautiful kitchen in which to prepare all their freshly grown produce is a must!http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439217-Screenshot-89.jpg
Unfortunately, the house only has a small bathroom so the couple decided to keep it clean and simple with white and grey. They managed to squeeze in both a shower and a bath though as Jenny was adamant that she could not do without either! http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439218-Screenshot-90.jpg
For newlyweds, the bedroom had to be full of romance so what could be better than muted red tones? Will they be expanding their family here in the future? ;)http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439220-Screenshot-92.jpg
Jenny thinks they may be expanding their family sooner than anticipated (even if John has other ideas!) so she decided to turn the second bedroom into a nursery just in case her suspicions were confirmed. http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439219-Screenshot-91.jpg
And finally, with so much unused outdoor space, the couple couldn't resist constructing a beautiful garden area complete with gazebo and of course, a vegetable patch to satisfy those green fingers! This is the perfect space for a romantic meal alone or whiling away the summer evenings with friends. http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439225-Screenshot-88.jpg http://thumbs2.modthesims2.com/img/3/3/8/2/1/8/3/MTS_zenomia-1439224-Screenshot-97.jpg
Ok so I really enjoyed doing this and I'm really pleased with how it turned out. I think it would be the perfect home for young newlyweds on the verge of starting a family and I really like the colour schemes, especially the bedroom! I am also re4ally proud of the garden because i never usually pay much attention to the outdoor space so this is a real achievment for me!

I hope you like it and I look forward to seeing everyone elses! :)[/spoiler]

Stone Bungalow

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57707_140621172332Front%20elevation.jpg

When Dirk Anderson-Miller was headhunted to join the Sunset Valley Llamas at the Stadium and told the job came with a house for his family and himself, he and John were sceptical, having seen Sunset Valley houses too often on "The House Doctor". Luckily for Dirk, John and little Kelly, the Stadium had hired a good interior designer who made sure the property formerly known as El Urban Sprawl, now rebranded as 'Stone Bungalow' would meet their needs well. Unfortunately for the interior designer, Sunset Valley building regulations are currently refusing extensions or anything that 'significantly alters the original house plans', so no extra windows could be added. The house was re clad in stone, giving it the new name and a landscape gardening firm contracted to ensure a crisp modern feel, which they achieved with minimalistic planters on the porch as well as big beds of herbaceous plants.

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57710_140621174751Barbeque%20area%20and%20Dirk%20working%20out.jpg

The car port also benefited from the landscape gardeners adding wall hung planters, with the main features of the back garden being the basketball court, the jacuzzi and exercise equipment, the large sand pit for Kelly and a comfortable seating and barbeque area with loungers positioned just perfectly for watching Kelly play while reading a book.

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57713_140621175657Lounge%20area.jpg

The desk by the front door would be perfect for John's planned career as an author, and the coffee table by the television proved to be just right for Dirk's sports' trophy and the Ode to Middlebury that John had been awarded for his love of literature. Kelly quickly scattered her toys on the sofa but left Daddy Dirk's beloved sports chair alone!

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57714_140621175919Kelly%20in%20the%20highchair.jpg

The open plan kitchen lets John and Dirk keep an eye on Kelly in her highchair while they cook, and the wide wooden planks used on the floor draw the eye across the room, making this narrow house seen wider than it really is.

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57715_140621180152Reading%20nook%201.jpg

Clever placement of screens divided up the hallway to form a reading nook for John, with a stereo for listening to music while Dirk uses the main stereo for working out!

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57716_140621180349Bathroom%20(1).jpg

The simple bathroom had a potty just waiting for Kelly as well as a bath shower combo for daddies to have fun in!

Some of Dirk and John's friends say they spoil Kelly, but just because she has the best furniture they can buy her, doesn't mean they don't teach her 'No means no'!

Jack Bunch and Jocasta Bachelor turned up to greet the Anderson-Millers but found the basketball court more interesting!

Custom contents credits to Lisen for small plants and the cookie rack (part of the coffee set), Danjaley for the toddler chair and cute and cosy bedding, heaven for the official MTS 2014 calendar, and Granthes for OMSP

As I use a test sim on the lot when I build/decorate, I ran into a financial issue ;) - going into live mode to check for routing issues caused depreciation... Luckily, I'd used the family funds cheat after buying the empty house to give the Anderson-Millers $70,000, so know that I didn't use any more money except to buy John's motorbike.

Hey! I have a question. Would adding a basement be considered changing the foundation of the home? I have some really good ideas for certain things, but I want to make sure I don't accidentally break any rules before I go for it. I plan on making the stairway into the basement somewhere in the backyard area, if that would change anything.

Since I don't have Supernatural/whatever the vampire expansion pack is, does that mean that I can't get the bonus points for the Adams or will my lack of a coffin be okay?

"Cute as a little baby unicorn", is how Olaf, the snowman, would describe El Urban Sprawl after the redecorating requested by the Smiths. At the start they still were newlyweds with a baby coming, but this redecorating took so long that the baby has already born and a now is a toddler!

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439273

Well, Jenny and John want a traditional and cozy home, and I've tried to transform El Urban Sprawl in their dream house. On the front porch I've placed a rocking chair, which the parents could lullaby their newborn.
On the entrance of the house, there's a table with some family pics of them, and a cozy living room with a little tv, a vintage stereo (uh, perhaps this is not reallya stereo, since it's vintage), and a shelf in perfect size for Jenny's small book collection. I've used earthy tones in this area to give a "warm" sensation on this room. There's also a shelf above the tv, for showing all the stuff they earned through college years and all of that kind of stuff. Flowers and various plants bring life to this area.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439271

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439277

The kitchen is very compact, but has enough space for all the kitchenware that John needs to cook and create new recipes, since he wants to be promoted quickly in the bistro. It has a good stove, and even a place for the recipe books of John. The dining area is separeted from the kitchen through half-walls.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439270

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439269

The nursery has all a baby (and their parents) need.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439302

In the master bedroom I've also worked with earthy tones (that "warm", heh?). And the bathroom I've worked with a blue and green palette, to give a clean sensation, and has a good shower that won't freeze them.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439298

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439301

Now, the backyard:
Jenny wanted a pool, but John have, uh, he has some bad memories about pools and sea, but with a water slider he has not to worry about. There's a treehouse (for when the baby grow up), a barbecue and a bar. Jenny, as an agronomist, requested a place for cultivating her own plants, and studying alternative fertilizers.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439286

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439287

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439288

And, finally, a plant view of the house (with the prices), and a top view of the whole lot.

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439290

http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1439289

Well, that wasn't so easy, but not so difficult, although it was very funny for me, that's all I have to say :bunny:
I've used some Store stuff, and some CC too (most of them from MTS, except the bathroom mirror and the tablecloth, these are from TSR).
I want to thank armiel for the Builder's Island (that loads very very fast), cmomoney and lemoncandy for several clutter placed around the house, and granthes for OMSP.

*You don't qualify as a judge for several reasons

Hey! I have a question. Would adding a basement be considered changing the foundation of the home? Nnnn... I'm going to have say no on this one. Adding or deleting basement would definitely be a structural change to the home.

Since I don't have Supernatural/whatever the vampire expansion pack is, does that mean that I can't get the bonus points for the Adams or will my lack of a coffin be okay?

You're still able to have a lair without a coffin, as it wouldn't be fair to give players with that EP an advantage over others, The coffin was merely a suggestion as to what one could put in the lair.

Hi, quick question, are archways fair game? Or do those fall under adding doors? Thanks in advance!

You may replace archways with doors (of the same size) and vice versa, but that's it.

Edit: Johnny_Bravo has just notified me he will not be able to participate as a judge. So, I need another judge to get this contest going!

If you're playing in fullscreen mode, try to switch to window mode, type ctrl+shift+c, then type fullscreen off. That's how I've made to take the mine.

Oh my. I had a ridiculous amount of fun decorating this home! This is my first competition, so please be gentle with me! :)

General shot of the outside of the home:
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-24-1.jpg
And a lovely bird's eye view with the total lot value:
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-29.jpg

Other views of the house are under the cut! :p

The outside of the home includes a small garage and a porch! Not much to do out here for a family who aren't particularly fond of other people, so all that's contained in this area are the necessities - a car, mailbox, and trash can.
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-28.jpg

The first thing anyone sees walking in the door is a lovely dark wood desk and computer! It's a small office space to do light work, with a stack of books available for reference!
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-27.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-10-1.jpg

The kitchen has all the basics a family could need - Stove, fridge, dishwasher, adult beverage shelf, seating, a great view of the tv area... :)
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-7-1.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-9-1.jpg

The bathroom is small, but certainly gets the job done with a nice, high quality shower!
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-17-1.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-16-1.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-26.jpg

The teenager's bedroom is probably my favorite part of the entire house. It's feminine and decorative while still being dark, broody, and functional, just how she wants it.
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-15.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-41.jpg

Next is the parents' bedroom, which is functional and beautiful.
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-19-1.jpg
http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq125/tookachan/Screenshot-18-1.jpg

Last but not least is the back yard! It has an outdoor lounge area with shade cover, grill, picnic table surrounded by greenery, and a nice, big hot tub.

Bit of a rush to get this up as I work FT and only get the weekends to sim.
OK, so I chose the Smith Family. John and Jenny were so happy that they didn't have to buy the Monotone that they overlooked some major flaws with their new home. The lack of windows was a big problem for them both, as coupled with the dreary dark decor, it made the house very dark and uninviting. They love traditional styles but wanted to lighten up the place, create space and lots of storage. Choosing a light colour scheme which reflects Jenny's love of all things vintage, they have fully furnished their home under budget thanks to Ikea and several charity/thrift shops. Jenny has sourced some retro and vintage pieces, given them a lick of paint and used them to furnish the home. The house seems more spacious yet still remains cosy having separate sections for living, eating and cooking - Jenny didn't want to cut back on the kitchen and has even planted her own ingredients in the garden. There is room for an expanding family with a fully decorated nursery with enough room for a baby and an older child.
The outside area has been landscaped to feature a pool, raised eating, bar and lounging areas.
Yes there's lots of CC, most from TSR, a couple of decor bits from B5Studio, plus some Store items.
Here's the outside view:

So, I've never done a contest before, nor have I ever done a lot of architecture stuff so this will be fun!

This is El Urban Sprawl: John & Jenny-d

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2930/14299691967_8cdb8fc7f4_c.jpg

So I started making it on a totally blank map on a 40x40 lot, which in hindsight will download the builder's island instead cause empty flatness makes for bleak scenery. Also the lot's too large but I was already halfway done when I realized.

It uses CC from MTS, TSR, Aroundthesims, and other places, all free. I don't pay for things lol.

In my head-canon both John and Jenny decided they didn't really like the design of the house and chose to re-decorate, however Jenny took the reigns picking a color of seafoam green to tie the whole house together with a light, open feel tot he house with warm wood accents. At least I hope that's what I made, me and Jenny think it's pretty at least :)

Cost total:

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2900/14299494210_178a149011_c.jpg
And just another note, there's something wrong with the gamma of my sims game so the print screen stuff looks like this. nothing I can do.

John and Dirk are indeed an unlikely couple. Athletic Dirk is always on the move while bookworm John prefers quietly relaxing with a good read. They make it work, though, and have recently adopted toddler Kelly and moved to the suburbs. The move included a pay cut for both of them, which meant they had to go with a smaller house than they would have liked, so they took some of their savings to put their own style to it.

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-3.jpg

They gutted the existing furnishings, including the stove and plumbing, and flipped the positions of the kitchen and living room. Luckily the house has a big yard so there's lots of room for entertaining, playtime for Kelly, and golf and soccer practice for Dirk.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-32.jpg

The kitchen's pretty basic as neither is super big on cooking. Modern, clean, and functional is all either of them really hoped for.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-28.jpg

John hoped for his own den to store is multitude of books. It wasn't in the budget, but they did manage to give him a reading nook off the kitchen so he has his own relatively quiet space.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-22.jpg

The living room is somehow open and closed off at the same time.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-21.jpg

They use the hallway to show off family albums and old friends.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-18.jpg

Small bathrooms are tough, but they managed to fit in a shower and tub as well as everything growing Kelly needs.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-15.jpg

Kelly's nursery with a jungle/animal theme.
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-12.jpg

The guys' room - Dirk's uniforms and John's books with cozy dark colors and clean lines.

Outdoor entertainment space, sure hope Sunset Valley is nice most of the year!
http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a398/aemiller97/Sims/Screenshot-29.jpg

This was a super fun, and challenging, challenge. Besides following all the rules which is something I'm not used to, I made myself limit CC. There's exactly one piece (not even shown in the pictures), a basketball and hoop by Severinka, free from TSR I believe. I really wanted to use the functional store hoop, but there just wasn't room. Really looking forward to the other rounds!

The entries look fantastic so far! People are doing things I've never dreamed of.

*Cutsocks --- That outdoor pergola/living area was amazing. I especially loved the roof over it, where you used the fence to create volume and light space. :king:
*Zenomia --- The gazebo was a great touch. My sims would love to live there.
*LucyBorgia --- A full basketball court in the back yard! I've always thought the half courts were odd, I have no idea why I never connected the idea of putting them together. ;)
*Bellakenobi --- Your landscaping looks so comfortable and livable. Can you design my back yard (irl)?
*TookaChan --- I love the shelf above the fridge. I've always thought that space was so odd, and you fixed it perfectly. :D
*SandyMDH --- Your color scheme is so homey and fresh. I also particularly love the outdoor seating area and the pond. :lovestruc
*BulldogFan --- The outdoor fireplace is so attractive! I also loved the way you turned that awkward long hall into a great feature. :report:

I'm amazingly psyched about this contest! I have been an avid ModTheSims fan for years but never (ever) had the guts to upload anything I create or participate in any contests. However, I'm working on my contest entry RIGHT NOW!!!!! (( anticipating a sleepless night here... ))

I am also having difficulty with the package file. I unzipped it with 7zip, and placed it in my Electronic Arts / The Sims 3 / Library / folder, but its not showing either in the Launcher or in-game. I've tried creating a new Sunset Valley world, deleting all my cache files, and opening other worlds, but the families are not loading. :(

I just updated the table, Jaylo and Bulldogfan82. :)

I'm sorry if this has caused any confusion for you, but the "Round 1" is the "El Urban Sprawl" lot for those that don't have a Sunset Valley save, nothing else. Others have created versions of the family for screenshots, which quite honestly I hadn't even thought of doing. If you'd like to create Sims yourself to put in the screenshots, of course you're more than welcome to. Who knows? Maybe one of the contestants would be willing to share the Sims they made. ;)

I would offer to make "official" Sims for this contest, but let's be honest. I'm no Sim-maker. :anime:

So is it okay if I use Sims 3 base game content for wallpapers and carpeting? Also, I have a few décor items that are from the base game, do I need to replace it with CC? That can be easily done but I wanted to ask first.

Um, quite honestly, I prefer homes that are custom content free, as it makes it less of a hassle to download and share, as well as the fact that it's interesting to see how other simmers use the same objects differently. There is no custom content requirement in this contest by any means, in fact, quite the opposite.

The Anderson-Miller Family

Dirk and John met at the university and became a couple almost immediately. Dirk was first impressed by John's mind, and John by Dirk's abs, but they then realized they have a lot in common, as both wanted to start a big family and they love modern style. They've been working hard since and saving up to $70.000, then get married and adopted a lovely 2 year old girl named Kelly.

The real estate market had nothing to offer for a long time, but then they inherited a rough diamond, a window of opportunity: "El Urban Sprawl", with a value of $17,869. With that and his savings they were good to go.

The Martinez Family
Ok first off I just want to say this my first competition, and I just realized the paragraph I typed as a preface to the home, I apologize lol.

Juan and Maria Martinez, married at 18, had initially struggled when entering the real world. Juan, came from a very poor Spanish family that struggled to keep food on the table, but their value of family kept them strong, and trying to find the American Dream, however Juan's mother made it certain that even if they were to find the American Dream they would never forget where they had come from. Maria came from a rather higher class family, although not technically rich, they were well-off, however money was nothing but a number in the Gomez household, as family is what kept them together, and Maria's father was in the Spanish Mafia. Maria had met Juan at a school, and knew she had found her future husband, however Maria's father did not approve of the relationship and had forbidden Maria to ever seen Juan again. Ignoring her father, Maria sneaked out every night, to meetup with Juan, however one night, Juan said he couldn't deal with their relationship being so secretive and he had wanted to take it to the next level. Maria had agreed, and on her 18th birthday, Maria and Juan decided that this was their time, and had ran-away, they were married and living in the outskirts of Bridgeport, attempting their way into the big city. It wasn't until Maria had gotten pregnant with their first child, Jose, that they had realized that the city was not meant for them, however money would not allow them. Juan and Maria made a determination to save up and move out of Bridgeport. After 6 years Maria and Juan had successfully saved up 50,000 dollars, however, Maria had once again fallen pregnant with Selena, and many of the funds went towards the pregnancy. Juan and Maria then sat down and made it a set in stone plan, that by Jose's 16th birthday, the family of four, would be up and out of Bridgeport and be living elsewhere. Ten years had passed and Maria and Juan had successfully managed to save up 75,000 dollars worth towards a new home. They looked for countless hours and days, for the perfect house with the perfect representation of family and culture until they had found "El Urban Sprawl" in Sunset Valley for a meer 17,689 dollars. It was in the perfect part of town, and was exactly what the family needed, from it's Spanish influence to the included pool. However, it would be a year or two before they could move in so they could do some much needed renovations. After a year of renovations Juan, Maria, Jose, and Selena had found themselves not only a new home, but news of two members soon to be joining the family. Juan and Maria quickly ordered for a twin-sized nursery to be built in the house with easy access to everything else. After years of hard work and determination, The Martinez found themselves a home for generations to come.

A wacky family photo, for a family-loving family, with the new casa in the background.

This was a true challenge, I had to google, and find so much inspiration to build this house! Spanish architecture was hard to portray with such limited abilities, but the interior wasn't as hard, I guess. I just hope I got it right. Thanks for the challenge Blake!

Here we have another refurbishment for the Smith family. Mr John Smith, an art teacher, and Mrs Jenny Smith, a housewife and keen gardener, have been married for a couple of years, and having just discovered that they're expecting, have decided to move from their 1 bedroom flat into a 2 bedroom house. Jenny has always longed for a garden, and they share a love of good food, fine art and classical music, so they want the house to reflect this. They also requested a fun nursery that will last their child for a few years, and a vegetable patch for Jenny to work on.

Here is the front view of the house

Mamathulu, what I do is upload my screenshots to www.modyourpanties.com which says
MTS provides free image hosting for users of the modthesims.info forums. Images uploaded via this page will only work on those forums - hotlinking on any other site will not work. Images must be .jpg, .gif, or .png images sized 750 kilobytes or less. Privacy is not guaranteed, and files will occasionally be deleted to make room for others.
by dragging them one at a time into the upload section, then copying the link address given. I then come back to my advanced reply box here at MTS and type [ img ] (without the spaces between the square brackets and img) and paste the link address, then type [ / img ] (again without the spaces) to close the image.

I've used photobucket in the past as well, which is quicker for uploading as you can drag a load of screenshots to upload in one go, but unless you pay for it (which I don't), you can go over your allowance of views for a month and then all your pictures are not viewable till the next month. I had this happen in a competition last year, so now it's mod your panties all the way.

Sorry, just yet another few questions! Can we make use of the roof space, as long as we don't create any full walls, or anything that juts out beyond the roof confines? And can we add decking?

*If you can somehow manage to make use of the roof space while still following the rules, I don't see why not.

*No, adding decking would count as changing foundation.

Thank you for fixing your entry, by the way. It looks perfect now. :)

Before is too late I have a doubt. I know we are not supposed to add or delete deck or foundations, but in my case I added some floating floors (just like at the front entrance) and a half wall to mimic a foundation/deck in the backyard. Is it ok or should I redo it?

I want my contest to be a challenge, but I also want it to be fun. I'm just going to call what you did a "creative workaround" as technically it didn't break any rules. You're off the hook. Don't worry about redoing it, I'll make sure you aren't docked any points for it. ;)

Yes, unfortunately I would have to dock you for that. You can fix it if you want to, I don't think it would look all that bad in the twins nursery. It would just give them more privacy, if anything.

John and Jenny Smith lived in a tiny house since they got married, but after knowing that Jenny was expecting a baby girl they decided to use some of their savings to buy a house suitable for all the necessities of the new family.

John and Jenny were soulmates. When they learned that they were going to be having a baby, they were overjoyed. However, their house was unfit to begin a family, so they packed up and moved. John allowed Jenny to do most of the decorating, she was overjoyed to do so. The only place she had trouble with was the nursery, since they didn't know if they were having a boy or girl, so Jenny just made it as fun and bright as she could.

Ey, first time I will actually do something on this site instead of finding amazing downloads. I always wanted to do something like this!

Quick question, do we have to make a house for every family, so use a family only once for all 4 rounds, or can we use each family more than once? So kinda like use the Adams family twice and use the Martinez twice. Maybe you answered this, and I didn't see a post for it. :|

Also... Can we also replace two single tiled windows that are next to each other into a two tiled window?

After debating on whether to join or not join the contest, I decided to give it a go & get out of my comfort zone of being shy & virtually non-existent on the internet. Anyway, I decided on the Smith Family.
The Famliy:
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57992_140625122441-R1-1.jpg
John Smith, a scientist for the local science facility, met Jenny one day. Jenny was an aspiring art student at the local university. They hit it off right away, & were soon married, after they graduated college. John & Jenny Smith then decided to move to a quaint, suburban area in their childhood hometown. Jenny was raised in a typical closed floor plan home & was eager to remodel the open floor plan home they moved into. John let her have control, since she looked so happy to remodel the house into something reminiscent of her childhood home. In the end, they were very happy with the outcome of their semi-open floor plan home. And soon enough, Jenny suspected she was pregnant & gave birth to a precious baby girl named Caroline, who has her mama's eyes & her daddy's hair. Caroline is now a toddler.

No custom content was used, only 1 store item was used(the baby monitor) in the nursery. I think it was mainly base game content that I used, but I can't be sure. The pastel colors seemed to be "traditional", so I went with that theme in the house.

John and Jenny Smith (and their soon-to-be-spawned baby) were glad to have a photographer come into their home and take pictures of their recent remodel. They may have forgot to hide the food and clean up the bedroom, but the photographer (a mysterious man who only goes by the letters 'JP') said it "added to the ambiance".

I imaged the Smiths as a 'fresh out of collage thenallofasudden we're married' type couple, mixed with a little be of lovebirds and a pinch of hipster.

Okay, here we go! I am decorating Round One's "El" Urban Sprawl house for John and Jenny Smith (and Ali, their unborn baby, but we'll get to that).

This is the house from the top-down view. To avoid obstruction, the price and whatnot is in the bottom-left corner. None of the existing walls/foundation have been changed. Fences and a half wall in the kitchen, however, were added.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57966_140625104545TopDown%20View.JPG
This is my gorgeous little lot from the front, minus the lot specs this time. The stupid lot behind the Smiths' had a tree and a light, so I had to go in and delete them for better pictures, which took like ten minutes, god, this lot placement is unfortunate.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57967_140625105858Round1Front.JPG
This house comes in color themes by room (yeah, yeah, lame, but I think I managed to pull it off). The bathroom is yellow.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57969_140625113910Bathroom.JPG
John and Jenny's bedroom is blue (the living room is, too, but I ran out of colors, damnit!).
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57971_140625114441Bedroom.JPG
The hallway is red and features only a table, carpet, and a window.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57972_140625114709Hallway.JPG
Their kitchen is a sort of a lighter brown, with a nice red wall to compliment the hallway.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57973_140625114927Kitchen.JPG
Their dining/living room is in blue and (when blue didn't seem appropriate) a white/brown wood. Near the door there are some artists' supplies and a bit of a reading cove. Here you'll also see the ever-so-dashing John and pregnant(!) Jenny.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57974_140625115157LivingRoom.JPG
The backyard in all its glory. It features a pool, a playpen for the little one, a firepit (not for the little one) and a pond.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57988_140625115642BackyardWhole.JPG
Closer in on the pool and playpen. Both are fenced in, for safety, of course. Various toddler toys are in the pen, while . . . there's not much except a pool in the pool area. Notice the gorgeous curved pool corners (I recently learned how to use them, pretty darn cool).
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57989_140625120013PoolPlaypen.JPG
This time zoomed in on the fire pit and pond. There isn't much to show except some nice hills and some pond lilies.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/57990_140625120350FirepitPond.JPG
Bonus Room!
Jenny's having a daughter! They've already decided on a name: Ali. There's only one problem: the room. What's with all the green? (This one might be a long one) Well, Jenny's insane, to put it simply. She's convinced she's having a son and there's no turning back. She's decorated everything her daughter could ever want in green and she's bought It's a boy! banners. Their friend Louise Hancock, a world renowned surgeon, has checked several times, and the outcome is always the same: it's a girl, it's a girl, it's a girl. But Ali's room still suggests one thing: it's a boy, it's a boy, it's a boy.

When I went & checked, they showed up on my ipod for some reason, but not my computer. Thank you for telling me! Ah, I wasn't clear enough. Sorry about that.

I know you can only use one family, but I was asking if you don't have to use all families for all four rounds. So like use the Martinez for round one, use the Jones for round two, and so on. I was wondering if you can repeat a family if possible.

I'm pretty sure what Blake meant is you can only use each family once. So by the time you get to the last round, you won't even have a choice, will only have one family left.

John and Jenny had been together for a while, and they knew an apartment in Bridgeport won't suffice. Moving to Sunset Valley means traditional styles and friendly neighborhoods for their upcoming baby. An affordable and cozy house was found for them to live. I used a ton of Store content. The only CC I used was roof patterns and object patterns.

I also have to be honest, my looks of "cozy" is much different from other perspectives. I was raised with a family that has modern tastes, with a bit of comfortable bits like family photos, rugs, pillows, and anything cozy. Basically, I make lots of things modern and this is practically cozier than what I normally make.

And wow did this place look bland at the start. I hated how the windows were placed and how there is only one window on a wall. Also, just little dimension edits of this house would have been so much better, like the front door part of the house. Other than that, it went pretty well. I was shocked to see that the place looks much better. I always go for certain houses to remodel because I know how everything goes and how the end result is always good, but I never try new houses. This really is going to help me out in the future. Plus, my houses that I remodeled are in my bin for future use. ;)

I'm having trouble getting the show spoiler button to show up! Help!

Try it out like this:

(spoiler) with [ ]

Information, information, links and stuff...

(/spoiler) with [ ]

I also recommend editing one post to have everything, then deleting the other ones so you don't spam. Make sure the spoiler tag has a space between other words.

Enjoy! I chose the Adams family! This was super fun I really enjoyed decorating. Bu geting the spoiler thing was very frustrating but I am very glad I finally had it to show up! I hope you enjoy my entry I hope to see others! I also tried to stick to dark reds and wood for this house I also wanted to do grays also. I tried to make the landscaping seem different by adding the dead trees and the brambles. I can't wait until round 2!

Please stop spamming this thread over and over again, it's unnecessary. Please edit your first post and delete the other three.

*Please edit your picture so that they're inline, I already gave detailed instructions on how to do that here. (http://modthesims.info/showpost.php?p=4421834&postcount=116)

*KDrwenski has explained to you how to use the spoiler tag, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I'm the "owner" of the thread and I can't. Only a mod has the powers to do that, but you should be able to delete your own messages regardless.

You still don't have your spoilers right. Reply to my post to see how it's done:

Whatever you want hidden goes between the spoiler codes.

You should be able to delete your posts, but I can do that as well. Please EDIT the last post you have made to make any more changes. Do NOT make more posts instead.

Just tell me what I need to do please.

When you "reply" to a post, you can see every code the poster used to make his or her post.

If you hit the reply button to any of our posts with the spoiler tag, you will see the code we used.

Make sure you use brakets [ ] ...not parenthesis ( ).

1. Write the word SPOILER in between two brackets.
2. Put all of the images and words you want in the spoiler after that.
3. THEN put the word SPOILER in between brackets again. BUT this time put a forward slash inside the brackets, in front of the word SPOILER.

Yes, you can still enter as long as there are spots left. You'll have to hurry though, it appears there are only three more. ;)

I also went with the Smith family, but decided to turn the other room into a "man cave" instead of a nursery. I wanted this to look like it could be both in the country, or in a more urban setting. I tried to keep it simple on the outside and light on the inside.

I can't use prt sc to get a shot of the furnished and unfurnished values. I've always done that before and it's worked but for some reason it just keeps coming up black when I paste it to both photoshop and paint... I have no idea what's going on and it's 1am and I'm exhausted. Anyone have any ideas?

I chose to use the Smith family for Round 1 of this challenge.
I was able to complete Round 1 $52 under budget with a final Furnished Worth of $72,817.
I was also able to furnish the Smith's bonus room of a nursery.
No CC or store content was used.

I hope that I've made it in time to enter my home! I had a very busy week (my basement flooded), but I finally got the Smith home completed.

Interior View : Build Mode
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Price-2_zps54d8c2f6.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Price-2_zps54d8c2f6.jpg.html)

John and Jenny recently moved to Sunset Valley when Doo Peas Corporation offered John a position fresh out of college. The young couple met while at university, but it took a very generous relocation package to convince the young couple to leave their hometown of Aurora Skies.

Jenny jumped up and down in excitement the first time she saw the ranch home at 60 Maywood Lane, delighted at the potential of the property. Six months later, John twirled his bride around for a loving kiss as they moved in. "My beautiful, artistic wife, you are a genius" he whispered, before carrying her over the threshold.

Front Porch - Made for Romance
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Exterior2_zpsd1133b3c.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Exterior2_zpsd1133b3c.jpg.html)

The well-lit front porch, previously bare and empty, boasted an array of living plants, a comfortable sofa perfect for cuddling, and a cozy porch swing. Jenny also created and planted beds flowering brightly with her favorite shades of pink. The carport now held their bicycles ready to take them both to work, or just out for an evening ride in Sunset Valley's beautiful hills or along its coastline.

Adult-ready Backyard (with tons of ways to relax)
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Yard-2_zpsdf2c3a7e.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Yard-2_zpsdf2c3a7e.jpg.html)
John took point on design of the back yard. "I need a place to grill and entertain" he'd said. Now, grilling for his wife, he couldn't help but smile as she toasted marsh mellows on the fire pit. Just behind her he could see the large garden, irrigated and ready for Jenny to apply her green thumb's magic.

Child-ready Backyard (with tons of room to just run around!)
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Yard-1_zpsf553a890.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Yard-1_zpsf553a890.jpg.html)

The back yard was enormous, and they'd considered putting in a swimming pool. Their priorities changed when John got a promotion and they decided it was time to start a family. Instead of tearing down the large tree in the back yard, John built a fort fit for a prince or princess, and the couple added a swingset and SimGnubb game. Careful not to go overboard, John and Jenny remembered to leave plenty of room for running around. "Maybe we can get a dog sometime.." Jenny said as they stood, arm in arm, looking at their work, smiling up at John. Her husband simply nodded and smiled down at her.

Front Hall and Living Room
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Living-Birdseye_zps4ba6a961.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Living-Birdseye_zps4ba6a961.jpg.html)

Jenny loves the front hall. There's plenty of room to remove shoes and coats without tracking in mud, and the leather-covered seat allows them and their guests to do so in style. The large mirror draws light in, and the bold wallpaper makes her smile every time she opens the door. The warm colors set the tone for the rest of the house, though everything else draws far more on natural materials and shades. The beautiful trees of Sunset Valley inspired Jenny as she picked a color palate.

There was no separation between the hall and living area, so John installed floor-to-ceiling wood blinds. Jenny gets shivers at the lovely coziness of their living room, featuring tall bookshelves flanking an elegant fireplace. She decided to eschew a large sofa in favor of a more intimate seating arrangement with two comfortable chairs and a loveseat (perfectly facing the fireplace for romantic nights). Just behind the loveseat is John's fishtank, his pride and joy.

Living Room Detail

Kitchen and Hallway
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Kitchen-1_zps054a1cfc.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Kitchen-1_zps054a1cfc.jpg.html)

Being an expert chef, the kitchen was a major priority for Jenny. Although small, she adores the efficiency of the space. At first, John argued for a traditional table, but Jenny was able to convince him that they would eat the majority of their meals in the beautiful back-yard. To keep the space open, instead, they installed a large island with seating between the kitchen and living areas.

In the hallway, John installed nectar racks on either side of their custom-built buffet cabinet, giving Jenny a place to store and display her heirloom dishes while John looked forward to building his own nectar collection.

The Bedrooms (Overhead)
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Bedrooms-Birdseye_zpsb7534b20.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Bedrooms-Birdseye_zpsb7534b20.jpg.html)

The two bedrooms of the home were tiny, but Jenny assured John that meant they'd have more opportunity for intimacy. She opted for warm, rich hues in the "master" bedroom, keeping in mind John's love of heavy, ornate furniture as she decorated.

Master Bedroom
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Master-1_zps2f27d901.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Master-1_zps2f27d901.jpg.html)

Although Jenny was positive their first child would be a boy, John cautioned against decorating solely in blue. Jenny compromised with a deep teal main color and splashes of bright orange for whimsy. All the furniture was hand-crafted by a master-craftsman of local wood, and the fabrics all-organic. Some nights, Jenny falls asleep in the rocking chair, dreaming of when she'll hold her first child in her arms.

Bathroom 1
http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee1/tomteboda/MTS%202014/Bathroom-2_zps9043ada4.jpg (http://s235.photobucket.com/user/tomteboda/media/MTS%202014/Bathroom-2_zps9043ada4.jpg.html)

Bathroom 2

The moment she laid eyes on the bathroom, Jenny knew this would be her toughest job. Taking the same theme from the rest of the house, she replaced everything with natural materials; a wood bathtub with copper accents, a sink featuring local sandstone and wood, and a matching toilet. She also had plumbing added for a washing machine. Although she would have dearly loved a stackable unit, none were available. "I can hang clothes out to dry, I don't mind," she told John when their contractor told the pair fitting a dryer in would be impossible.

John and Jenny can't wait for the future in Sunset Valley, and already this town, and this lovely home, feel like the perfect home to start their future in.

Some more comments for the creators (the first several are on page 4 of this forum)

Kasandro -- Your home feels very masculine without being cliche. The vibrant colors of the nursery made me smile, and putting a twin bed in there was a fantastic idea.

TMBrandon -- Wow, brave to choose the Martinez family for a 2 bedroom home! You did a great job making the space seem open and spacious. I loved your bathroom shelves next to the shower... I'm totally going to have to incorporate that idea in the future. The boy/girl shared room feels harmonious yet individualized to the children. And that deck.. I cannot get over it, its so inviting!

TSYokawe -- +10 for the Japanese theme. It was a great idea with terrific execution. Every detail seems perfect to me.

MSNikki82 -- You aded a lot of curb appeal to your home with those lovely craftsman pillars. The corner bathroom vanity used a tight space very well.

Mamathulu -- Somehow you managed to make the bathroom look spacious. Excellent job! I also particularly adore your backyard garden; it looks natural, and I expect the butterflies will love it!

XPHantomHive -- The black cabinetry looks classy and modern at the same time, and I love your round pool.

Kadience -- Your backyard is a delightful place. With that great lighting, I bet the family uses it day and night.

Tiffisio -- You had me at "a local scientist". I love your entryway seating area, its a great use of space. Great use of some eclectic art.

Japalion9 -- Your placement and shape of the kitchen is really unique! I love your backyard pond, there's no lack of interesting things to look at there. Also, the front-driveway basketball hoop was a great addition.

Cherry4567 -- The line of bushes in the carport really added a "wow" punch to the front of the house. I like how you fenced in the kid's play area.

KDrwenski -- I love redecorating Sunset Valley homes! Even though I have all the worlds, I return to Sunset Valley all the time. You're right about awkward layouts though, particularly with the windows in this house. I usually bump the hall wall out to match the depth of the bathroom and turn that into an etertainment area, move the front door into what is currently the kitchen, and expand the size of the current entry to make that into a kitchen. This no-wall-no-window-no-foundation-changing rule had me creatively re-imagining all of that.
The nursery was the most charming part of your house. I love how you chose purple and pink and didn't overwhelm with girly colors while making a distinctly feminine room! Also, well done with the breakfast bar :) I swear I didn't steal your idea!

Swim5408 -- The Addams family looks like they're having entirely too much fun at that firepit. The dead trees are a nice touch.

Fenisa -- The design of your gazebo nearly made me sqee! I love its elegant formality.

BeautySimmer9538 -- Your redesign is very clean, Sims would easily move around in your home. I like how you turned the back yard into a private park.

StardustX -- The restaurant menu / chalkboard above the stove was a fantastic idea! I like how your design feels very much like a young couple just starting out might decorate.

OhMindful1 -- Your design aesthetic is very bold! I love the recolor you did on the living room rug in particular, it breathed new life into a far-too-fussy pattern.

Tigerguy -- Putting the table next to a counter like you did was brilliant! I've never done that before, I'll have to try it in the future. Your color scheme is very sophisticated and "together"

I updated the table, and it appears we have more last minute entries than the table will fit. I just added Tiraslin and OhMindful1 to the table.

Unfortunately, StardustX and tigerguy87, although your entries were first, they technically didn't qualify because the "Furnished and Unfurnished box" wasn't included while the other two did. I still put you down as "play-alongs" if you're still interested in continuing the contest without being scored.

With a full table, we're moving out of the application round and moving on to Round 2. Expect the new lot to be posted within 48 hours, and your scores within 72. Have a nice day everyone, I hope you all had fun participating.

How are people getting the "price box" to show up in their photos? Mine all seem to hide the UI, even in build mode.

I knew I should have done my entry last night, but I was soooo tired and couldn't be bothered to resize my photos and upload them. I guess I'll be playing along too. These building/decorating contests fill up so quickly. Obviously we need to have more of them...

I'm pretty sure they're putting their game in "Window" mode instead of fullscreen. That seems to do the trick for whatever reason.

Yes, I put my game in window mode (for the first time ever!) and used 'print screen' to capture the screen, then used paint to crop out the price and paste onto the picture I wanted it on.

I went with the Martinez family and their Spanish influenced style. I had a lot of fun landscaping the outside to give the house a bit more zip. It's surprising how economical landscaping can be, considering what a big difference it makes. The two obvious issues were the incredibly bland front and the neverending hallway of doom. Mutske's faux arches were invaluable in this house. Love those things and use them in most of my builds, as they are a great way to break up a wall when a window isn't possible. Not sure that I love the hallway or the kitchen, but overall I'm happy with the result.

I just added you to the table, aeval99.
Thank you!

Now I finally have time to go through the other entries (I've only peeked to see the format etc.) I love seeing what people do with the same space.

@Kasandro ~ I love what you did with the hallway. That is such a difficult space and yet somehow you turned it into a feature. Great angle for that photo. Bravo!

@TMBrandon ~ Spectacular kitchen and bath. Love the shelving in both rooms and the shower is to die for. Really love the shot taken from the front entryway. Great colour scheme throughout...nice and airy.

@tsyokawe ~ Love the theme and the execution. The ceilings add a whole new dimension and the gazebo is a great addition.

@msnikki82 ~ Corner counter in the bathroom...why didn't I think of that? Awesome nautical theme in the bedroom. Is that net in the game?

@KDwrenski ~ What a lovely space you've created for your Sims in the backyard. I'd like that for my own house.

@Fenisia ~ Love it, just love everything! So classy and elegant and yet not stuffy. I adore the outdoor spaces. Brilliant!

@Tiraslin ~ Fantastic use of the blinds as a room divider. I kept having to go back and look at the photos again because I couldn't recognize which room was which. Really like the stone in the kitchen too; gives it a lot of depth. Nice use of the fish tank.

@devilsue ~ Wow! Just wow! So much too see and to look at. Love the colours, love the lines. So many "spaces" to live in, both inside and out. My favourites are the bathroom and the kitchen...and well, pretty much everything. Another design where I couldn't recognize which room was which.

A lot of great entries. I really enjoy watching people grow during these contests, from the beginners to the experienced, everyone seems to flourish with each round and challenge themselves with something new.

I really wish I had noticed the contest sooner and started earlier. To save time I ended up going with something that was a rehash of something I had done before. Can't wait to get my hands on the second round and push myself out of my comfort zone.

Hello! Just wanted to ask whether you will be judging the play-alongs if you have time. Sorry, but I would really to enter this contest! I won't really mind if you just put me as a play-along though, but still it would be cool to take part...

Anyway! Here is my entry. I could not decide between the Adams' and Smiths, but after seeing how many people were doing the Smiths I thought it would be a better idea to do the Adams (I also like making gothic houses). Some rooms - namely the bathroom - ended up looking like prison cells but other than that I think it came out okay! :D

Decorating is pretty out of my comfort zone (especially landscaping gah) but I saw this challenge and went for it! I decided to do the Smith family. Recently, I reinstalled my game so I have very little build/buy CC so most of what I used is store content or baufive stuff (http://www.b-5studio.com/). I kept the layout of the house mostly the same since I felt like it flowed somewhat decently. Hated that long hallway though. :|

Lastly, the nursery! Obviously it leans towards girly, but in case the Smiths have a boy, the only thing that'll really need to be changed is the bedding!

It was at this point that I realized I forgot to take pictures of the backyard before exiting my game, and I had made some major changes to it. Being as lazy as I am and realizing that I won't get scored, I decided not to try and go back and fix the work I had done.

I just updated the first post. Round 2 has officially begun and will end on July 12th at midnight. Good luck everyone and have fun! ;)

Some other notes:

*Expect Round 1 scores within a few days

*You may delete, edit, and change the pond in the backyard however you'd like

*Do whatever you like with plants and trees

*There's some shale/rock material in the backyard. You can cover that up easily with a different kind of grass. If you apply a different kind of grass paint on type of it and hold, slowly but surely it will disappear, I promise.

Just a fool question: we have to redecorate the Round 2 house (and all the next rounds) for the same family (and same budget, and same bonus room) we had chosen for Round 1? I just want to be sure of that...

I seriously was glad for the Supernatural pack because it made everything so easy with it. Also, I had never done anything like that when I comes to the landscape. There are so many plants! I think it took up about $8,000. House was easy for me, just the window placing was strange. Dimension edits would have been nice, too. I was about to do the Martinez on this house when I saw "2ba", but the bathrooms are too small for a nursery. Also just realized, the Adams are walking distance from the graveyard. Woot.

The windows in the front are singles, but they still are in the places of the original windows. I just didn't see others fit and I didn't appreciate the varying heights. It looks so wonky like that, so I went simple with University windows that look just right for an old Craftsman house.

Additional thoughts: I intended the backyard to be basically "haunted" and left there, untreated, and so the Adams can have their own peace and not have to be disturbed. Just be secluded in peace. :anime: There are times when there can be empty spots, and I like to think of it as an opportunity for the household to add their own things in there once they settle in.

Wow, lots of talking. EDIT: And lots of editing. Lets get started.

And the lair. It's small, but it works nicely. Enough room to sit on the stone hard "bed", and plants are in the back to decorate and fill in the space. I also tried putting curtains on that one window, but it won't let me. :(

EDIT!

A cold bathroom, just like their feelings.

Quite a fast worker. Like I said, this house was quite easy for me. Who knows, maybe the last 2 can be a bigger challenge. :)

My goal is for each house to be a tad harder than the last, or a least harder in different ways.

For example: The first house was a small home so the main challenges were working around the god-awful floorplan and filling up that giant backyard.

The last home will be a larger home so the main challenge will then be budget constraints.

Does that make sense? :giggler:

Yeah, I can tell there was more challenge in each round. Budget was a bit there, but I just needed to delete a computer and I was in budget.

Also, I was hoping to have renovations for Plus Plus, the house to the right, but I am guessing we renovate empty homes?

What's the address of the round 2 house? (I'm afraid the lot won't show up because it hasn't in the past, and I like to have them all on a 'Remodeling SV' save)

It's supposed to be 28 Sim Lane. ;) It's next to the Sekemoto family and "Mosquito Cove".

I found a glitch in the house - there's an area on the bottom floor where there's a door I want to replace with an arch but I can't because it intersects the stairs. If I move the door over one I can replace it but not otherwise. Would this be allowed?

Edit: Resolved, but you'll have to use moveobjects on to replace it, which sucks.

This would be a case where I would suggest using "moveobjects on" to delete the door and replace it. Otherwise, you would have to be docked a point for moving the door.

Edit: You ninja'd me! :anime:

It's an unfortunate EA thing. They have a few other things like that- irreplaceable stairs (which can't be fixed D:) and the freaking streetlights! What, again, are the rules on stairs? Just no removal?

You can add them, and replace them, you just can't delete the ones that are already there.

Ok, my entry round scores have been sent in. Do the play-a-longs want scores because I didn't do those. 25 was enough for today!

EDIT: Just saw which house is the round 2, god how I hate that house! The first thing I do in every SV is bulldoze that to oblivion.

EDIT2: I have one slight observation to make. If you have a $70,000 budget, and only use $40,000 you better make sure that you've dotted every i and crossed every t, and thrown in a couple extra just in case!

EDIT3: Thanks to LoonyLoonyLacey for the b5studio link. I couldn't remember where the Grant Park objects came from when I started to re-instal my CC. Now I have it all back! Yay!

After this contest is over, I'll enter a Sims 3 version of "House of Ages" into the queue for contests http://www.modthesims.info/showthread.php?t=338156 since I think there is finally enough content to do it. Well, there has been for a while, but I kinda got...pi**ed off at contests for a long while there. Also, my last two contests were closed due to lack of interest.

(Yes, I'd be willing to do a Sims 2 version if those players are interested, they'd have to re-create based off a Sims 3 version, as I no longer have my Sims 2 game.)

(I wouldn't do a combined Sims 2/Sims3 as I feel the content/graphics really don't lend to being able to judging them equally.)

Okay so here's what my round 1 entry would have been if the contest wasn't restricted to 25 contestants. I chose the Smith's family and for some reason I pictured Jenny as a flea market master.

John Miller & Dirk Anderson met in high school & have been inseparable ever since. After years of being & living together, they decided to buy a house together. Soon after, they adopted Kelly. Since they lived in a big city apartment, complete with the thin as paper walls, raising a child was simply horrific. The loud sounds constantly woke Kelly & the noise from outside annoyed John. Dirk didn't really mind, but he wanted to keep John happy. Though he wouldn't admit it, Kelly's screams at 2 AM were making him irritable at work. Thus, they decided to move to a quiet suburban area of Sunset Valley. They moved there after Dirk's sports agency transferred him to Sunset Valley to be the manager of the newly build sports arena in the town. And with Kelly being a light sleeper, a quiet neighborhood was required.
The family in the living room:
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/58301_140628151924-R2-4.jpg
Well, after the Anderson-Miller's move into the house, they realized that it was not their style at all. So, to make it their style, they tore it apart inside & outside. They thought that the funky pond in back simply had to go, so they had the water drained & filled in so the backyard was safe for Kelly. They couldn't take the idea of Kelly possibly falling in & drowning, so that was the first thing they did. They also had the house sided with white sliding to rid of that terrible brown wood look. The roof was redone as well, to match better with the sliding. The fences & columns were next, as they were replaced with more modern versions to fit the couple's style.
The house as outside renovations were completed:

The floor plan:

http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/58300_140628151918-R2-3.jpg

Once the outside renovations were complete, they proceeded to the inside. After the inside & backyard renovations were completed, they decided that the house now suite their tastes & was ready for showing. Here are the pictures they liked & felt that deserved to be seen.
The living room is seen above, with the family in the picture(1st photo)

The reading nook:
Another view of the nook can be seen from in the kitchen picture.

The ground floor/1st floor bathroom:
They made room for a shower in the 1st floor half-bath, making into a full bath.
http://www.modyourpanties.com/hosting/58304_140628151933-R2-8.jpg
Next we move up to the 2nd story of the house.
The Nursery:
John was initially worried about giving Kelly the bedroom with outdoor access, but Dirk calmed him down by reassuring that the door would be locked when they weren't outside & if they were in the nursery with Kelly, they would keep a close eye on her regarding the door.

The 2nd floor bath:

Finally, we move out to the outside & backyard.
The front porch:
The backdoor landscaping can be seen from the image, as well as the carport & the bikes against the side of the carport.

The backyard:

I used a little custom content, mainly in the wall art(paintings in living room, kitchen, parents bedroom, & the nursery). I also used a custom shelf in the 1st floor bathroom & the toys on the shelf in Kelly's room are custom as well. I attempted to use as much game material as I could, but the game simply doesn't have an adequate selection for modern pictures. The toys are just cute & make sense in a little girls room, & the 1st floor bath needed more storage so I could put clutter & the shelf was handy for that. Plus, it looks good against the window. I think I achieved modern style, as I tried to use the shiny, more high-techy looking stuff throughout the whole house. I used white wood in almost every room in the house. The lamps are the same style as well. So, I achieved a cohesive element I think. The house looks like it flows together & it looks very modern in that regard(in my mind). I know that my preferred style of decoration wouldn't fit for males & I had to make myself use 'manly' feeling things...it was hard. I didn't think that a modern style would be so dang hard to design for! So, no pastels or flowers, or anything girly...just darker colors & more 'electric' feeling type rooms. The ktichen is my favorite room in color scheme because of the gray & teal granite.xD It looks so cool & 'electricy'!
I'm pretty satisfied with it all, it isn't what I normally would do..but I like it!

I love the redecorating/building contests and would love to see more of them. I checked out the page for House of Ages, and while it sounds really interesting, I can see why the response maybe wasn't the best. It seemed long and a bit complicated, to be honest. Perhaps you could cut it down to fewer rounds and streamlined it a tad. Maybe start with a common two bedroom box and then add on rooms with each round or something.

I'd still like to try my hand at it either way. :D

I went with the Anderson-Miller family also. I actually did the entire lot for the Adams family and then changed my mind. I wanted to challenge myself by trying to transform this "cabin" type house into something at least somewhat modern and I'm happy with the results.
I didn't know what I was doing at first, but this ended up being a semi-modern beach house. I turned the upstairs hall into a tiny gym and plopped the lot onto a beach lot in my building world so the pictures would look better. :P

The Round 1 scores are finally done! It took me almost two hours to compile them, but they're finally here! :)

Cutsocks

Decorating:

Judge 1: 10/10 - This truly is Fantastic Fencery, I love how you transformed the outside of the home using fencing and fantastic landscaping as well as putting the entire backyard to use, with a lot of privacy.
Judge 2: 9/10 – Front of the house looks very modern and beautiful. I don’t like mix of light wood, dark wood (chair) and red wood (coffee table in the living room. I think you used too much light wood everywhere (ceiling, walls and kitchen). Back yard is beautiful and what you did with fences. Great job.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 5/5 – You’ve done exactly what this family would have wanted.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what family ask for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 5/5 – While lots of areas were extremely cramped, that was unavoidable due to the layout of the home.
Judge 2: 5/5 – Furniture is placed very nicely, good job.

Judge 3: 17/20 - Wonderful job! I think everything was well done except for three smallish things. I think using a different floor or texture for the outside drive and terrace would have been better; the current one is a bit flat, at least in pictures. Although I love the way the color pops, it just feels a bit too off balance. Lastly, I wish you had extended the library and kitchen areas to the outside wall somehow, that hall feels real long.

+5 Bonus Room – I loved how you fit in the reading area into this home, very creative.

Total score: 61

Zenomia

Decorating:

Judge 1: 9/10 – I really like what you did with the outside of the home. The landscaping is beautiful in both the front and backyard.
Judge 2: 6/10 – The front of the house look too simple. You have too much red in the bedroom. The pond in the garden has weird edges. I like choice of furniture in the living, dining, and kitchen.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 3.5/5 - Although, I really like what you did with the home, it doesn’t come off as very cosy or traditional as it could in some areas, particularly the dining room and bathroom.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what family ask for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 4.5/5 – Really well laid out home. I hate to be nit-picky, but the only thing bothering is the cat’s scratching post, which makes the other side of the couch unusable. I think it would have functioned better in the long hallway were it wouldn’t block anything.
Judge 2: 3/5 – I dont like tv in the midlle of the room. Bathroom is too modern.

Judge 3: 15/20 - Individually, I think you had a lot of cute areas. However, I think some of them would work better placed differently. Swapping the dining/living room, placing the outside eating area by the pond, and not trying to separate them so much with ½ walls/fences. You had quite a bit of budget left over you could have used to add plants to the right hand of the garden, and the sides of the house.

-14 points for adding 14 spaces of foundation

+5 Bonus Room

Total Score: 37

LucyBorgia

Decorating:

Judge 1: 7/10 – I particularly liked what you did with the bedrooms and bathroom, but the dining room, kitchen and living room feels a little all over the place and there doesn’t seem to be one “theme” going here or any other type of consistency.
Judge 2: 7/10 – There are too many patterns in the bedroom and the colors don't look very goodl. I like the basketball court and backyard. Green in the living room look very nice.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 4/5 – Although you gave them everything the family asked for, the kitchen and dining room don’t say modern to me.
Judge 2: 3/5 – Family asked for a modern house; your bathroom and nursery are not very modern, also the kitchen tiles and table looks very old.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 4/5 – While there isn’t anything technically wrong, I feel that the backyard objects could be laid out better.
Judge 2: 4/5 – You have too much stuff and pictures in the walls. It looks messy.

Judge 3: 18/20 Maybe just a little (a lot ) less green inside; and the sides of the home could use some more green. (plants) Other than that, well done!

+5 Bonus Room

Total Score: 52

Bellakenobi

Decorating:

Judge 1: 9/10 – I love what you did with the outside of the home it certainly is cute as a baby unicorn. The interior is certainly warm and cute as well.
Judge 2: 9/10 – Your house looks beautiful. I like furniture and colors you used. I don't like color of the counters, it’s not going very well with the color on the half wall. Everything else look beautiful.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 5/5 – Cozy, warm, traditional and a nice place to raise their baby. This is the perfect home for the Smith family.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 4/5- The dining room looks a squished, and the backyard feels a little too empty in some areas and crowded in others.
Judge 2: 4/5 – I don't like kitchen before dining room, you need to go all around the kitchen to get there, but everything else is placed very nicely

Judge 3: 16/20 - It feels more like “Grandma’s house” than a home for young newlyweds and a small child. Long empty hall, and no plantings on the sides of the home.

+5 Bonus Room

Total Score: 57

TookaChan

Decorating:

Judge 1: 5/10 – The front of the home has no landscaping done at all, whatsoever. The inside of the home seems like a giant clash of Victorian and modern, and doesn’t flow nicely at all.
Judge 2: 4/10 – Front of the house and backyard are too simple and look empty. The colors don’t go very well together, red and blue.

Family Needs:

Judge: 4/5 – The house is certainly dark, but feels more like a bar/club then a family’s home.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 3/5 – The inside is fine, but the outside looks messy and somewhat randomly placed.
Judge 2: 3/5 – The furniture you used is good, but everything in the living room looks empty and simple, without any details.

Judge 3: 15/20 - The functional could use a little “funk”. Some clutter décor on the inside, and plantings to soften the stark lines of the home outside. You can definitely tell an “Adams” lives there though!

Decorating:

Judge 1: 8/10 – I loved what you did with the inside of the home, it like the pastels that make it look so friendly and inviting. Unfortunately, I find the backyard to be just… bizarre. The chess/fountain area doesn’t make any sense and looks extremely odd.
Judge 2: 8/10 – Front of the house, furniture and colors are just beautiful, I like everything inside the house. I don’t like that big chess in the yard and that big empty place there, you should make it a kids playground.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 4/5 – While this home is otherwise perfect for the Smith family, I just can’t get over the feeling that the house is too feminine for a couple with possibly a son or two.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 5/5 – Everything looks well laid out and accessible, good job.
Judge 2: 5/5 – The furniture is placed very nicely, good job

Judge 3: 18/20 - I always know there will be a quality job when I see your name. Your interiors are lovely, and I like the use of levels both inside and out. I just wish there was something for kids to do outside, and some more plants to soften the front.

Decorating:

Judge 1: 7.5/10 - My only complaint about this house could be that the different woods and themes seem to clash, especially in the entry way and dining room. There also appears to be a distinct lack of landscaping.
Judge 2: 8/10 – The front of the house looks empty. You should use some more flowers or bushes. I like the furniture and colors you used inside of the house.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 5/5 – This seems to fit the bill. Couldn’t make it better myself.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 3.5/5 – The pool is too large for a house of their size, plus the hot tub, it all feels very slapped down and takes away from the backyard.
Judge 2: 4/5 – The furniture is placed very nicely, but you don't have tv anywhere, I don't like that.

Additional comments:
Judge 1: I would have liked to see more landscaping in the backyard, especially. It could have done wonders for the home.

Judge 3: 14/20 - The individual interior spaces are all quite cute, a few could have used a bit more deco. The exterior needs help.

Decorating:

Judge 1: 8/10 – I really loved the muted black and white color palette in this home, it made it look very sleek and modern. Kelly’s bedroom could’ve used more color variation, however and the front yard could have gone a long way with a little bit of landscaping.
Judge 2: 5/10 – The colors of the nursery are too dark and don't go very well together. The front of the house is too simple, you don't have any flowers/bushes/trees. The backyard is pretty.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 5/5 – Everything looks great, a good mix of sporty and modern elements.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 4/5 – Everything looks fine, but the objects in the backyard feel a little scattered to me.
Judge 2: 3/5 – Your furniture in the living/kitchen is all black and white, it looks too simple, you should add more details.

Judge 3: 13/20 - While I know the layout of this home is a challenge, I feel you’ve made it more challenging than it was originally; both inside and out. I do appreciate you trying to re-assign spaces, but I don’t think it works. I find the living areas too cold, and Kelly’s bedroom too busy. Pictures need to be larger.

Decorating:

Judge 1: 9/10 – I really love what you did with this home, my only issue is Kelly’s room. The purple and green is a little bit too much for the otherwise modern home.
Judge 2: 9/10 – The front of the house is a little empty. The purple wall in Kelly’s bedroom is too bright, you should have used the beige one. Everything else is very nice. Furniture and color are very good. I especially like the chairs you used, beautiful.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 5/5 - Very modern, I’m sure this family would adore this home.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 5/5 – Everything looks great
Judge 2: 4/5 – I dont like the tv in the middle of the room, you should also switch the sofa and the television.

19/20 - I love the Asian flair, and the use of items for other than their intended use (column as chimney, and window blinds to define library space). Well done! I feel you could have stolen some space from the hall to add to the library, and softened the front of the building with plantings.

Family Needs:

Judge 1: 3/5 – While I love your creativity, putting the toddlers in the hall simply isn’t realistic as their bedroom would have to be a hallway when they’re older.
Judge 2: 5/5 – You've done what the family asked for.

Furniture Placement:

Judge 1: 3/5 - Again, putting their children in a hallway isn’t “live-able” for a Sim family. Most of the backyard feels relatively empty.

Judge 3: 17/20 I think you’ve captured the Martinez family and their “look” quite well. I do feel you’ve tried to squeeze them into this home, and they’ll need to be moving again soon. The hall will be a good place for some bowling or bacci on rainy days.

The color palette is extremely bold in some areas which only makes the fact that there isn’t any consistency in the house even more obvious. There is no style in this home, only a lot of clashing. Little to no landscaping has been done on this home. The pond in the backyard looks like a marsh caused by too much rain due to the fact it’s entirely grass.
Judge 2: 2/10 – The living area has too much white and beige. Everything is too simple.

Judge 1: 5/10 – I like the front of the house, it looks very cute and certainly shows a lot of potential. The inside of the house is bizarre honestly, how every room’s color scheme is completely different than the next. The kitchen is red, the bathroom is yellow, the bedroom is purple etc. Try having one consistent theme throughout the entire house. The same goes for the style, there’s too much clash of old and modern.
Judge 2: 2/10 – I don't like colors you used, they don't go well together and make everything look messy. Too many colors everywhere.

Judge 1: 2/5 – The bright neon colors everywhere and clashing modern and country elements make this house seem far from traditional.
Judge 2: 3/5 – They asked for traditional style and you have everything here; a mixture of styles.

Judge 1: 2/5 – There’s several issues with this home, the desk clogs up the otherwise open space, the pool is thrown in their front yard, and the backyard feels extremely empty.
Judge 2: 4/5 – I don't like the placement of the dining table and desk in the middle of the room.

Judge 3: 14/20 - When I think of “It’s a boy” I usually think of blue. To me, green is one of the gender neutral colors. Pictures need to be larger. Thank you judges! I know my house wasn't overly traditional but I just couldn't imagine a young family living in a home like that. I'll be honest it never occurred to me that the bathroom came across as modern. Thanks for the feedback - it's interesting to see different people's opinions! Just to check - by 'gothic' - do you mean architecture and decoration from the late medieval-renaissance period or 'neo-gothic' vampire wannabe - they're quite similar in a lot of ways, but one has more room for interpretation. I think maybe I got a little hooked up on what was meant by 'traditional' (which for me, being from the UK, is 18th-cent to 1900, not 1900-1960!) so I just want to make sure I get the interpretation right! :)

I'd read the posts on my phone and came on the computer to reply to Zenomia, and by the time I got here, you'd brought up the same thing, Mamathulu! That difference in home decor styles across the world :)

Zenomia, I looked at your bathroom again after you'd said that about it as when I first saw your lot, I thought how lovely and cosy it was - I think you and I should have swapped bathroom wall coverings as i think it's the tiles you used that give it a more modern feel? Mine wasn't modern enough  But as you said, I think part of that is our experience of bathrooms in the UK.

Judge 2: 4/5 – You have too much stuff and pictures in the walls. It looks messy.

Thank you for your comments and I'll try harder with the next round :) The reason I used a lot of green in the house was that when I made the family, though John's randomly chosen favourite colour was blue, both Dirk and Kelly had shades of green - I will override my desire to use their favourite colours next times  . I take on board what you said about too much stuff on the walls, I'd found everything I thought they might want and put it in, but didn't go back and edit it out to have more modern minimalism. I think I was thinking too much about the amount of wall clutter my brother in law has in his modern flat than how fans of modern architecture would want it. I did want to have a bar and stools instead of the table and originally had Kelly's highchair next the the bar, but when I went 'live' to check for routing issues, Dirk had a major problem with the bar and stool next to the wall, so I had to change it :( it did fit the vibe of the house better before though.

@LucyBorgia I totally agree with your point about differences in nationality playing a part. I was told my front was too simple but you won't find many UK houses with front gardens, porches and driveways! XD so that makes it very difficult to know what to do with it. And I thought my home was prettt cosy too but there we go! :P

I purposely left the descriptions vague so contestants could interpret things differently. :anime: Do whatever looks the best to you personally. I'm sure the judges will understand that there are several different styles of "goth."

....
*Yes, that would be fine. You can replace two single windows that are next to each other with one double window.

I was going to PM you to ask this, but thought someone else would probably want to know :) - can we equally replace a double tile window with two single tile windows?

Agreed. 'Traditional,' like 'ethnic' has different meanings for different people all over the planet. :|

RE: OhMindful1's entry
Judge 1: 0/5 – This isn't what the Smith family wanted at all. Nothing about this home says “traditional” or “cozy” to me.
Judge 2: 1/5 – Family asked for traditional style but everything in your house is too modern

I don't know why, but I totally thought this was a house for the Anderson-Millers, not the Smiths. (Now, you just need to do the reverse when you do the Anderson-Millers, :P )

BlakeS5678: I misinterpreted the template you gave us. Next round I'll have the score broken down.

That's fine. Everyone's learning here, including me! I would expect a few bumps especially considering this is my first time hosting. ;)

No harm, no foul; we'll both know now for Round 2. :)

Ok, that's cool, I won't fret about it then! :)

Since I missed being a judged entry, I will gladly take constructive criticism/feedback from anyone offering. My husband thought my ceiling was hideous. Yes, no?

THANK YOU so much to all the judges. I'm still insanely excited about this contest, its my very favorite part of Sims 3 to build and rebuild houses. Actually it was my favorite part about Morrowind... there might be a reason I've still never "beaten" that game, and it may or may not be related to the modding.... At any rate....

I gleefully began the remodel of this charming house (with all due respect to its detractors) in sanguine and aubergine shades. Then I kicked myself. I live in a part of the country that is known for its gothic revival architecture and high number of historically-kept homes. Inspired by that (and a love of interior design) I spent a whole night making a lovely gothic revival farmhouse for the Adams family... true to Gothic Revival aesthetic. Which most distinctly does NOT feature dark red, purple, black, grey, or any other goth-culture color. After carefully taking screenshots and playtesting I went back to double-check the instructions and read the following with great dismay:
They love everything dark and gothic

Wait, what, dark??? DARK??? Now my stairs refuse to be remade. *sigh* I'm VERY glad you gave us two weeks to do this. Oddly I've managed to locate the kitchen in 3 different areas. Maybe I'll put it upstairs this time.. (just for variety).

Thank you for the feed back. It is pretty fair. Although, I didn't put red in the nursery. It was a peach pink color, the lighting must have made it look red. And the tv, couldn't figure out how to fit it in the house once I added the fireplace...then I realized I could have taken it out & put a tv in it's place. As for landscaping...It's a skill I need to work on badly. I'm not the best landscaper. In fact, I normally don't landscape at all. But, what's done is done.
I just realized that I didn't put a tv in the round 2 house. I should have...but where would I put it & find the money to do so...? Eh, already submitted it & I can't change it. No harm if they don't have one...I hardly watch tv anyway & they aren't that important to me compared to decoration for the walls. The scores were very interesting to see, lots of different opinions on style presented!

Woah.. I just discovered "mentioning" people in posts. I will try to do this properly now! I'm not going to hide anything in {spoiler} tags though because I'm only going to say nice things. This (should) will be the last of the Round 1 comments from me. I hope I haven't forgotten anyone.

@devil_sue - great use of clutter, especially the shelves in the kitchen. I'm not a clutter fan (personal design aesthetic) but you made it work very well and believably. I love the mint scheme, its such a relaxing color. The long kitchen dining area looks so inviting placed like it is in front of the sliding doors.

@aeval99 - very inviting landscaping. I'd like to pull up a chair and just sit outside there for awhile. Your use of kitchen / living room space looks very good for traffic flow. I love the corner flower stand in what would've been dead space in the bathroom.

@pingpati123 - That gazebo swing is to die for. Which may be why the Adams family needed coffins...

@LoonyLoonyLacey - Your spartan bathroom is almost perfect in its elegant simplicity. Sometimes less is definitely more. I really like the windows you chose for the master bedroom; they're full of character.

@Diwtay - I'd like to hire you to help me with my home garden arrangements, please. Your landscaping has a real sense of cohesion, progression, and taste. I really like how you turned the gardening areas into their own "feature". To me the landscaping was the highlight of your design. You chose furnishings that were well in proportion to the space, making it feel larger than it is. I also really liked how you used the industrialized shelving in the kitchen.
