View Full Version : Tutorial for Neia's Online Create-a-Career Tool

Simmiller
28th Apr 2018, 12:15 AM
This tutorial is for how to create a career for Sims 4 using Neia's online Create-a-Career tool in Windows.

:mod: 25MAR2020 -- Neia has updated the tool! I have added a solution to step 14 if using the cmd instructions does not result in your .py file being imported to the _pycache_ folder. However, my sims aren't going to work, so I have contacted Neia on the CAC tool forum, and am awaiting help.
:mod: 7FEB2020 -- Neia is off taking care of her new baby! The tool's server is currently full, and she hasn't had time to update it yet. We shall all wait patiently, as we know that new moms are very busy and real life takes priority, of course :)
:mod: 7JUL19 -- Updated Python steps to match Neia's - Also, checking on possible PTO conflicting with other mods that may not have been updated yet - keep an eye on the forum!
:mod: 29JUN19 -- Neia has updated the Create-a-Career tool for the June/2019 update!
:mod: 26APR19 -- Neia has updated the Create-a-Career tool for the April/2019 update!
:mod: 19APR19 -- While we wait for the updated Create-a-Career tool, there is a workaround for fixing careers that anyone can do that are missing text because of the most recent update, regardless of whether or not you are a creator, with the use of Sims 4 Studio (http://sims4studio.com/) by midnitetech posted HERE. (https://midnitetech.tumblr.com/post/184246280767/41619-patch-update) Thank you to MTS member Dero (http://www.modthesims.info/m/10140315) for bringing that to my attention!
:mod: 10APR19 -- Neia has updated the tool so instead of Python 3.3, you now use Python 3.7. I am (finally) including a link to the latest version, and updating the text. You will still see .pyo and Python33 in the images until I have a chance to replace them with .pyc and Python37.
:mod: 14JAN19 -- .pyo will now show up as .pyc when completing the Python portion of the steps, beginning at step 15.
:mod: 19DEC18 -- If you have noticed your text files missing after re-exporting your careers, I have put a solution as STEP 12b.
:mod: 6DEC18 The Create-a-Career Online Tool has been updated for the current Game Version, and Neia is working on adding the skills from Get Famous.

I will not be explaining how to make screenshots, uniforms, or Chance Cards, and I am assuming you know how to manage .zip files.

:alarm: Any questions regarding why things are done a certain way, about the tool itself, or any technical issues should be directed to the creator, Neia, at the Create-a-Career forum. (http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/921946/create-a-career-looking-for-beta-testers)

What you will need:

Neia's online Create-a-Career tool. Register for free here (http://www.simneia.fr).
s4pe (http://sims4group.github.io/) To download s4pe after clicking the link, click on Download s4pe, then s4pe.0.3.c.exe. This will get you the program and you can install it from your downloads folder.
Python 3.7 (https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-373/)Download the appropriate file for your system. Create your own installation folder prior to installing Python37. I recommend C://Python37 for convenience. To do this, go into your C drive folder, right click on an empty spot and click New > folder and name it Python37. When the Python37 installation wizard pops up, click the default installation. The Python installer should detect the C://Python37 folder you created.

For the purposes of this tutorial, some picture references have been made to the Airline Employee Career by Simmiller (http://db.modthesims.info/download.php?t=610544) found on Mod the Sims.

USING THE CREATE-A-CAREER TOOL

1. Once you have registered, log in to Create-a-Career and click CREATE at the top of the screen.

2. Click the "Create a new career" button.

PIC 1
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765135

3. Name your career, and click Save. What you name it here will be reflected in the name of your .package file at the end.

This brings you to the "EDIT YOUR CAREER" page.

NOTE: At any time from here onward, you can scroll to the bottom of the main career page and click "Save" to save your progress. You may leave the site any time afterward, and return to your saved progress.

PIC 2
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765136

4. Again, name your career. This will be what shows in the game.
-If you are making a multi-track career, the name should be a clear indicator of the main theme of your career if you plan on uploading it for others.

The "Status" section is for your personal use only with 3 choices: Work in progress, In testing, and Working. Update this as desired using the dropdown menu.

Tracks, Levels and Branches

The Main Track reflects the name of your career.
When you "Add a level" in the main track you are creating the different levels of the main career for yourself or other players to progress through.
Ultimately, once you have finished the editing process, these are all that is required to create a functioning career for the game.

Under "New track" you are given the option to "Add a track."
You use this when you want to have multiple career choices within your main career.
These become Branches. You then add levels to these branches to complete in game.

NOTE: It is recommended that you NOT use symbols in your track/branch/level names or descriptions. For example, do not use "/" or "*", etc. This has been known to cause errors in game.

By clicking "Edit," you can edit or view any section at any time, as often as you like.
Clicking "Return" brings you back to the main career screen without making changes.
Remember to click "Save" then "Return" when editing.

FOR SINGLE TRACK CAREERS:

5. To the right of Main track, click "Edit" to upload the screenshot picture and custom icon for your career. Click "Save," then "Return" when you're done.

PIC 3

You will find most, if not all, of the game's icons here:
The Sims 4 Ultimate Game Icon Pack by TheSimKid (http://db.modthesims.info/download.php?t=549037 )
Jungle Adventure Icons by Simmiller (http://db.modthesims.info/download.php?t=608148 )
Icon Archives on Sims Community by Jovan Jovic (http://simscommunity.info/tag/icons/)

6. Directly under Main track, click "Add a level." Name the level, click "Save," then "Return."

7. To the right of each level you create, click "Edit" to enter all the required information. Clicking "Delete" removes the level completely and permanently.

PIC 4
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765138

Title - you can change the title of this level here.

Ideal Mood - Choose from the dropdown menu. This can be the same or different for each level. Please be aware that EA took out the ideal mood function from the non-active careers in game. Even though this still shows as editable in the Create-a-Career tool, only active careers like Doctor, Scientist, and Detective now have ideal moods that actually function in game.

Base Performance - How much the performance bar will progress through a work day, starts around 60 and ends around 10 in game, depending on the level. Lower levels in the game progress quickly, so the Base Performance number is higher, to indicate a faster speed. As players progress through the levels, the Base Performance number should be smaller to make the levels last longer.

Missed Work Penalty - How much the performance bar will drop if a Sim misses work, default at 15. If you increase this number, the performance bar will drop more quickly.

PTO per day - How many days of PTO (paid time off) are gained for each work day. For example, it starts around 0.2 and ends around 0.33 in game, depending on the level.

Simoleons per hour - How many Simoleons your Sim will earn per hour at this level.

Duration - Number of hours worked per day.

Start hour - This is based on a 24 hour clock, and you enter only the hour, no minutes. For example, 8:00 AM is entered as 8, while 2:00 PM is entered as 14.

24 HOUR CLOCK
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765150

Place a check mark in the days you want your Sim to work.

NOTE: Before you choose Objectives, click "Save." The rest of the information you have entered will otherwise be lost.

Objectives - This is where you will choose what, if any, skill levels are required in order to progress to the next level in your career. Click "Add an objective," and choose from the dropdown menu, for each skill you wish to add.

Click "Save" at any point to save your progress. Click "Return" to return to the main career screen.

Do this for each level of your career.

FOR MULTIPLE TRACK CAREERS:

8. To create multiple career choices within your career, under New track, click "Add a track." This will show up on your career page as a Branch, below the Main track. See PIC 5 for an example of multiple branches within a career. From here, to the right of each branch name, you can click "Edit" to add the branch icons and screenshots, or "Delete" to remove the branch.

PIC 5
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765139

Follow Step 7 for every level within each Branch of your career.

IN GAME TEXT

Not everyone has their career(s) translated into all available texts. The more you are able to provide to players, however, the more players are able to play your career(s), should you choose to upload to the internet.

9. On the main career page, you will see a section called Texts. See PIC 2 for reference. Each language is represented by 2 letters. For example, English is shown as US. Click the language of your choice. You will be taken to a page where you will enter all the text you want to see in the game.

NOTE: This will NOT translate languages for you.

At the top, you will see two entries called Location and PTO tooltip.
Location is where your Sim will be working. A company name, for example, is appropriate here.
PTO tooltip is where you put the heading you want to see when taking paid time off. "Take Vacation Day" or something similar is recommended.

In the example shown in PIC 6, you see "Track 4 - Airport Customer Service Agent." In this case, Track 4 would be shown on the main career page of the Create-a-Career tool as a Branch, and represents what you will see if you are editing a multi-track career. Otherwise, you only see Track 1 and the title of your career.

PIC 6
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765140

Title - Title of this career or branch.

Title (gender neutral) - Title of this career or branch.

Description - A detailed description of this career or branch.

Hereafter, you enter the information for the title and description of each level of your career and/or branch.

Click "Save" at any time to save any entries you have made. Click "Return" to return to the main career page.

OVERVIEW - It is highly recommended to refer to the Overview section on the main career page regularly to ensure the proper flow of your career.
For example, if you want to check that your objectives have skill levels that progress in the correct order, click on the Objectives tab.
The name of the career and or branch is shown on the far left. Levels proceed in order from left to right, but are not indicated by name or number.

PIC 7
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765141

EXPORT:

Before you export your career, click "Save."

10. Click "Export" when you are ready to prepare your career file to be usable in game. Click "Export" again on the next screen.

When the instruction screen pops up, click the Download button ABOVE the instructions. There will be a zip file created, usually in your Downloads folder.

PIC 8
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765142

You are now leaving the Create-a-Career tool!

11. Make a file on your computer where you will work on your career, and move the .zip file from your Downloads folder there, and extract it. There will usually be 3 files extracted: a folder named "package," Neia_Careers_Commons.package, and a .py file. Neia has stated that the Commons.package file does not always come in your zip file depending on what type of career you make and the skills required to advance levels.

PIC Inside Zip file from Create-a-Career Tool
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765151

12a. Open s4pe and make a new file. Import all the files from the "package" folder. Save this file as your career package. ie Simmiller_Careers_AirlineEmployee.package

PIC 9
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765143

This next step is only for those who have re-exported their careers created prior to the 19JUN/18 update and whose text files have been lost as a result. If you have made a new career, please skip to step 13.

12b. There are several ways to input text into your career. The first 2 are long and tedious. The 3rd is the method I used and ended up being fairly quick and painless.
1-You can go back and re-enter all of the information into the Create-a-Career tool by either directly typing it all again, or by copy/paste from your old career files, and re-export again. Or,
2-You can use Sims4Studio and also either re-type or copy/paste the info. Or,
3-Open your old career .package file with S4PE, and export all the STBL files somewhere easily found. To do this select all the STBL files, then click Resource, Export > To file. I made a folder in each of my career folders called "STBL FILES FOR SEASONS," and saved the STBL files from the old .package files there. You don't have to do this, but it does help to make your files are neat and organized. Close the old .package file. Open your new .package file in S4PE that you created in step 12a. Select all the STBL files and delete them. Then, click Resource, Import > From file. At this point a popup appears for you to select what files you want to import from your PC. This is where it's handy to have a separate folder for your old text (STBL) files. Go to that location, select all the STBL files, and click Open. Save your .package file in S4PE and continue on to step 13.

Close s4pe.

This next part is how to complete the Python portion of creating your career. It is required in order for your Sims to be able to use the Paid Time Off function on the phone. You don't have to have any knowledge of Python to do this! Please simply follow the steps, and you should be good to go :)

13. Copy and paste the .py file you extracted directly in your C://Python37 (or wherever you have Python on your computer) location.

PIC 10
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765144

14. In the search bar on the Taskbar of your computer's desktop screen (right next to the start button, or found by clicking the start button) type: "cmd" and enter. Do not use quotation marks in this or any other type instructions that follow.
In the black box type: "import YourUserName_Careers_CareerName.py" (example import Simmiller_Careers_AirlineEmployee.py) and enter. This is the exact name of the .py file from step 13 that you put in C://Python37 (or wherever you have Python on your computer).

NOTE: You may see an error response in the cmd box after completing this step. You can ignore this error if the correct file shows, as described in step 15.

:!: If using cmd to run Python results in the .py file not being imported into your _pycache_ folder, close the cmd window and go directly into your Python folder, where you have it installed. Click on the Python.exe file, then import your .py file.

PIC 11
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765145

You can now close the black cmd box.

15. Go into your Python location on your computer (ie. C://Python37) where you put your .py file, and go into the folder _pycache_. There should now be a .pyc file in there. Pre-December 2019 this was a .pyo file. If not, go back and redo the actions in steps 13 and 14, paying particular attention to the :!: at the end of Step 14.

In the following pics, 12, 13, and 14, .pyo should now show you a .pyc file.

PIC 12
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765146

Copy and paste that file to your career location file on your computer. Rename it to remove .cpython-37

PIC 13
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765147

Make a new .zip file with the name you want your ts4script file to be. Put the .pyo and .py files into that .zip.
Change the file type from .zip to .ts4script

PIC 14
http://thumbs.modthesims.info/getimage.php?file=1765148

NOTE: If you don't see the .zip in the name of your file do this from The Windows Club (http://www.thewindowsclub.com/show-file-extensions-in-windows):

Open Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization. Now, click on Folder Options or File Explorer Option, as it is now called > View tab. In this tab, under Advance Settings, you will see the option Hide extensions for known file types. Uncheck this option and click on Apply and OK.

TEST

16. Put your career.package file, the .ts4script file you made, and Neia.Careers.Commons (if you don't already have it, and if it comes with your exported Create-a-Career file) into your mods folder, and test it in play.

Once you know it's working and your icons and pictures show in game when choosing your career, if you want to share it online, make a new .zip file and call it whatever you want your career file to be. You put 2 or 3 files in there as required: Neia_Careers_Commons (if it came in your zip file from Neia's tool), Your career.package file, and the .ts4script file you made. You can now share it!

My Python won't work ?? I downloaded the XZ from this site : https://www.python.org/downloads/release/python-337/ : I put it in the C:// directory I unzipped it and attempted to install by clicking on it, but nothing happens. The computer doesn't know what to do with the program. So- thinking it had to be installed in CMD with the use of .exe in the instructions, I tried that, and it just says "inoperable command" D: I've been working on this custom career for over 3 months now. I have created custom uniforms and everything to go with it. It would really stink if I had to trash it, but at this point, I'm losing hope!

:help: Please? Anyone ?

Hi @stephibaby ! I haven't been on this tutorial for a bit, so sorry! You seem to be downloading python from the wrong place. Click on the direct link I provided at the top of the tutorial, and follow the instructions there as well. You should have no problem then! :)

Please let me know how it goes for you, or if you've solved your issue in the meantime. Best of luck!

Thank you so much! I was very lost and needed to make an animal care career because the one here was FUBAR. I haven't modded since TS2 so this seemed daunting. It really wasn't with your tutorial!

Hello, I apologize for my English, I'm French.
I created some career thanks to this tutorial, but I have a problem adding some fillers.
The name and description of the girl does not position it in the right place. They should find this on the first icon and not the last one.
would anyone have a solution? (I followed all the tutorial without skipping step and it is that with the sector that it poses a problem)

In any career text such as track names, level titles, or descriptions, using characters other than letters, for example numbers or symbols like "/" or "*", can sometimes cause problems, so remove those from your text. Also, go back into the career tool and double check that your images are all in the right place, just as a precaution. Remember to save every time you make changes. If you are still getting a glitch after you re-export the career, I recommend contacting Neia on her forum thread (http://forums.thesims.com/en_US/discussion/921946/create-a-career-looking-for-beta-testers) to see if she can help as there may be something more specific wrong.

Hey Simmiller, I'm having a problem importing the file. I made it to step 14 and get the following message:
TypeError: source code string cannot contain null bytes

This is my first time ever using Python and I don't know squat about coding. I have gone through the process a dozen times now and I'm getting the same errors, I have re-exported from the career creator tool, saved the file Python with 3 different names, reinstalled everything...I am at a loss.

This is a quick question that I've tried googling but I'm struggling with. Which text codes stand for which language? I understand that US is English, and JP is probably Japanese and KR Korean, but I'm wondering what each code means within this program as I'm getting mixed results from searching online. Thanks!

1.Import all files in package folder, and save as - into python33 folder,
then i took the .py file that was in the download zip from Neia and placed it into python, i cmd and copied/pasted the full name of the file with .py into cmd ( before i did the little c:python etc the person said to do and it worked )

This was such a great tutorial until Python had hiccups. The second line in the .py file (I looked at it in IDLE) calls to "import services", but Python it doesn't seem to find it returning:

File "C:\Users\maris\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python37\Marish01_Careers_SillyTestCareerk.py", line 2, in <module>
import services
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'services'
>>>

I tried this in 3.3 and 3.7. I'll put on my thinking cap and try to imagine what that file would be, where it's at and why it's needed. My Python exposure is extremely limited, but there is bound to be some of my experience that will help out. But if there's a quick answer by all means share!

I am not sure I am completely understanding but I think you have a path issue. When you first open command prompt (cmd) enter set path=C:\Users\maris\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python37
Python 3.7.0 will not recognize the -O so just enter python to start the program and you're ready to proceed with your import command which in your case would be: import Marish01_Careers_SillyTestCareerk.py
This is going to generate an error message. Disregard it. Your new file will be in the _pycache_ folder and you're all set to go forward with the instructions as printed in the rest of the tutorial.

http://i68.tinypic.com/3476ubk.jpg

Side note to Simmiller: Excellent tutorial and I found it very helpful and easy to follow. Python 3.3 has some very serious security issues which may or may not pose a risk simply by having it installed. I opted for 3.7.0 and some trial and error but I've created and tested a career and everything looks good! I also reinstalled Python directly to C:\ to make that path a bit easier to navigate.

So I've followed everything in this guide and I ran into two problems.
One - I get File "C:\Users\pugglerock\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python33\Pugglerock_Careers_Professionalstreamer.py", line 2, in <module>
import services
ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'services'

Two - It won't show up in the actual game itself but will show up in the section about mods, so I'm not entirely sure where I'm going wrong.

EDIT - Nevermind I know where I was going wrong! I was importing the entire file and not just the package folder. All done now and works like a chamr :) Thank you for the guide!

I hope someone can help me. I see some similar posts above but I'm not sure how to fix it based on reading them several times. I must be missing something. I moved my file Moondansr_Careers_Swimming.py to my Python folder C:\Users\dawns\AppData\Local\Programs\Python\Python37-32 and then entered the command C://Users/dawns/AppData/Local/Programs/Python/Python37-32/Python.exe -O in the command prompt window. Followed by import Moondansr_Careers_Swimming.py and got the error about No module named 'service'.

In my __pycache__ folder I have a file now named Moondansr_Careers_Swimming.cpython-37.opt-1.pyc which isn't a .pyo file. I read that it isn't the same thing but no matter what I do that's all I can get. Will this .pyc file work?

Hi, thanks for replying!
The file I get when doing exactly that on my computer is .pyc instead of .pyo
I went forward anyhow and renamed it, adding it to my zip file but it seems odd that I get a .pyc file when all tutorials say it should be .pyo and even show it that way.
Has anyone else had this experience? Is it okay to use the .pyc file that I'm getting?

Hi there! All technical questions should be addressed to the Creator of the tool. You can reach Neia on here (http://www.modthesims.info/member.php?u=9050937) or on the tool forum, which is linked from the tool itself.

I'm sorry I don't have the technical knowledge to answer these kinds of questions, but Neia is usually swift to help out on the forum :) However, I'm fairly certain there is no way to import a career into the tool. You would have to use an XML editor in conjunction with either or both s4pe and Sims4Studio. That is beyond my capabilities at the moment, figuring which codes need to be fixed. It may also have something to do with the ts4script files, so my best advice is instead of updating someone else's career, it would be far easier to recreate it. Remember if you're planning to upload a career that you've recreated an updated version for, that you follow the guidelines for Updates and Remixes. (http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=MTS2:Creator_Guidelines/Updates_and_Remixes_of_Creations)

I can really only answer questions about the procedure of creating a career, and not about the tool itself or the programs used in the process. I am happy to see others helping out, though! My thanks to all of you :)

Hello! Thank you for this tutorial!
I'm wondering if I want to make the same career track but for base game only players AND a separate one for seasons players - can I use the same names on the create-a-career but different skill objectives? Or what's the best way to go about that?

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I made an account specifically to thank you. I followed the instructions and was able to make my own Professional Wrestling Career and it works in the game! I've never been able to mod anything before, so this was really exciting!

Thanks! I'm glad to be of help with the tutorial itself, but I'm afraid I don't have that answer. As this is a technical question, you're better off asking the creator of the tool :)

One answer Neia gave on the forum for her tool was this, but it was back in March, so I don't know if it's still current: "The tool works for both, and Python should work too, but I don't know if you can create .package on a Mac."

I realize that doesn't specifically answer your question, so I still suggest going straight to Neia either on here or the tool forum and asking them ;)

Good luck! And feel free to post here if you get an answer or figure it out, as I'm sure there may be others with the same query :)

Is there any current way to create gender specific titles or descriptions for each career?

Is there any current way to create gender specific titles or descriptions for each career?

Yes, there is. For male you use {M0.text} and female {F0.text} . Those are zeroes, and you use those special brackets using your SHIFT key plus [ or ]. I've never personally used this, so I'm going by others' creations, but it seems to work for them :)

Example:
{M0.Waiter}{F0.Waitress} at Sim's Sandwiches

Good time. I have a problem. I created a career "Footballer". Career begins with the step "Career football" (Tracks - Main track). She goes four supeny, after which, as planned, the player has four options for continuing a career (Tracks - Branch).

0. Football player (4 stage)
(Right to choose)
1. Player - (7 stage)
2. Coach - (7 stage)
3. Manager - (7 stage)
4. Club owner - (7 stage)

As planned, the player starts a football player, and after the fourth step he has the right to choose whom to become.
But, for some reason, a career begins immediately from the “Manager” stage, bypassing the first four stages in a football player’s career.
What could be the problem?

I can only suggest that you double check all your text in the Create-a-Career tool to check that you only have letter, number, and punctuation characters. Anything else sometimes causes careers not to work correctly.

The other thing, and this is far more likely, is that the tool needs to be updated since the latest patch and EP release, so I would caution people to wait for Neia to complete the update before creating new careers :)

Can someone help me? I'd like to know what is the PTO and the Performance pattern of career growth of the game. I wanted her to be like as possible to the default of careers of the game, and make my carrer to stay a "balanced career" like the maxis version.

Ex: My career in WIP is 10 level (with 2 tracks). But which basis of performance does it begin? 60 accurate? And in the tracks because from 60 to 10 would be up to 6, within the tracks how does it work?

Ex: Is's like this?

Level 1 - 60
L2 - 55
L3 - 50
L4 - 45
L5 40
L6 35
L7 30
L8 25
L9 20
L10 15... ?

Thanks.

I don't know if anyone has actually gone in to see what the actual accrual rates are for PTO, tbh, as I can't seem to find it anywhere, myself.
What you have going there looks right, as far as how fast/slow the levels progress, but again, I don't think these rates have been officially published.

One thing you can do for research purposes is go through the career tuning files using Sims4Studio's extract tuning tool. It will be a long process, though, to find the amounts for each career level. If you're really wanting to match the game, that's the best way to find out, as far as I know :turtle:

Thanks @Simmiller for the help... About PTO, Do you have any recommended settings? I wanted to know how to better define it, I'd like to making it balanced (not too much easy, but not difficult) like the careers from sims 4... My work have 10 tracks... The 0.2 PTO start is more easy to get a PTO or more hard? I need the parameters :(... Thanks.

@Hayran

I sent you this response, but I wanted to share it here so that others will have the same information:

So, a setting of 0.2 for PTO means for every day your sim works, they will earn 0.2 days off. So, it will take 5 working days to earn one full day off. A PTO of 0.5 will earn half a day off for every day worked, and a PTO of 1.0 means your sim will earn one full paid day off for every day worked.

I suggest that the PTO reflect the job. So, a high powered, high paying job might earn a lot more time off as time goes by. A very low paying job, with short hours might earn a lot less time off. So, as the Paid Time Off increases, your numbers get bigger.

For example, and please understand I'm not being discriminatory but basing my views on what I've seen in real life, a waitress will earn less time off than a CEO, so their PTO numbers will be lower. You might start with 0.1 and end up at the end of the career cycle earning 0.3, for a waitress. A CEO might start earning 0.25 and finishing with 0.5. It's all your own personal choice, but we do look for it being somewhat realistic, when moderating careers that have been uploaded.

I hope that helps!

It's exactly something I'm looking for, I'd like sim in the lowest position on the career to earn less PTO, and the game system works a little that way. Even because in the game the promotion comes as a reward for hard work with your sim. But about the values I understood, now I do not understand how this PTO be applied:

For exemple the waitress (of bartender career [imagine], used your exemple), stats the cicle with 0.1 right? And I put in the tool for Neia "0.1" in PTO... But how does it end in 0.3? The game define it? And I did not understand how in the PTO works in a CEO [level10] starts high [0.25] and ends low [0.5], should not this increase as well as the waitress? For exemple, waitress level 1 start 0.1 and end 0.3, the senior waitress master [level 5] start 0.5 and end 0.6 and CEO star 0.25 and end 0.50 no?

Well, it's complicated for me understand, maybe, because of the language barrier x:

I want to set up in a way that low level (lv 1 to 6) earns little PTO (example 0.2 5 days working = 1 PTO) and high level (lv 7 to 10) earns half PTO (0.4 = 3 days working = 1 PTO).

thanks for your patience.

@Hayran
You should be able to define each level of your career separately. If you go back into the tutorial, look at Step 7, picture 4. You see "PTO per day" as one of the options. Whatever you fill in here affects only the current level you are editing. You have to do this for each level, the information does not carry over between levels :)

So I don't know where to share this knowledge of mine to make most people see it, but as we know a lot of the custom careers made with this tool are currently broken in terms of being suddenly unpaid.
Well, I dug through the packages of the updated ones and the packages of the broken ones, and I found out how to sorta fix this manually.

You need Sims 4 Studio for this! I'm not gonna explain in-depth how to use that tool. You also need the most up to date version of Neia's Common package. It's downloadable on this page: http://www.simneia.fr/help.html Put it into your Mods folder, deleting the version you already have there beforehand.

These are the steps to make your sims receive their paycheck again:
1. Exit The Sims. Locate the career package in your Mods folder - open the career package in S4S.
2. You should see the XML files.
3. Click at the ones that say Type "Career Level Tuning".
4. Look at the code on the right. Scroll down until you find a line that looks something like this: <T n="simoleons_per_hour">85</T> The number is going to be different for every career level.
5. Indent the line by pressing the TAB key on your keyboard once.
6. Before this line, make a new line and type/paste: <V t="simoleons_per_hour" n="pay_type">
7. After the line, make another new line and type/paste: </V>
8. Check the attached image to make sure your new lines look like it (with a different number, of course).
9. Repeat this for every entry of the Career Level Tuning type. There will be one for every career level of every branch. Yep, I know. Time-consuming. But you love your Sims, don't you?
10. Save the package. Done! Enjoy your reclaimed pay.

Important note: When you go into the screen where you pick your career, it will still show up as "Unpaid". But this is just a visual bug. If you actually choose the career, it will show the correct pay and your Sim will receive it when they go to work.

You're welcome!

I'm sorry, I just realized you asked this question as well, about performance. That number dictates how quickly each level passes, and is applied to each level separately. The numbers here go from larger at the beginning to smaller at the end. The higher numbers indicate a faster speed, so the levels are completed more quickly. The lower numbers mean a slower speed, so they take longer. Your numbers look accurate, though! That is basically how I would do it to have a career move like the ones in the game :)

Thank you @artystanks for the information! It's always good to know how to fix things on our own :)

Usually, you need to use the Create-a-Career tool to re-export your careers, making a new .package and .ts4script file, which will also update your current Neia_Careers_Commons.package file, to get everything hunky dory again. Neia usually updates the tool as well as the Commons file when there's a major update to the game. Doing so should alleviate the need to manually alter the files, and you should see the payment amounts. You have to remember to also remove your old .package and .ts4script files for your new ones to work (another error I personally made which still showed me not getting paid despite all my other efforts  )

However, that being said, I did have to re-put my English text files (STBL) into my .package usings S4S, but only for one of my two careers, but I think that had to do with a previous update erasing text.

But, this is grand information and I hope it helps people who want to go this route!

Thank you, again :lovestruc

Hi!
Sorry for maybe a stupid question.
I tried to follow this, however I am a bit lost on how exactly the branches work.

Correct me if I am wrong, I was under the impression that you could make something like.. 7 levels in the main branch, and then add different career paths/branches with other 3 levels each for the sims to further continue their climbing of the ladder.

Not sure where I went wrong but, I tested my career in game and in the first level it said "next promotion X and Y" which were the branches I was planning them to be able to go into after lvl 7. The sims got promoted but the tooltip had no text. It said "promoted to ", and now as next promotion it gives me what actually should be my level 2...

So basically there's an extra level in between lvl 1 and 2 which is not reflected in the stuff I see in the tool. I don't see that level anywhere, and it looks like it's linked to the branches?

I cheated my way up to lvl 7 and after that I can pick a branch normally and continue which is great. But that "ghost branch" career lvl between 1 and 2 haunts me, lol.

What can I check to remove it?

Thanks! :)

My thoughts are there's a possible conflict with another mod somehow, or maybe adding child as a potential job user is the culprit, and may conflict with a possible required skill you've included that children and/or teens can't develop and require cheating through the levels. Another thing is to double check the format you've used to add child and teen to your XML. Careers automatically come out of the tool being available for young adult/adult/elders, so you have to be careful when adding other ages, making sure all age references are altered, wherever they exist in any of your XML.

I would recommend recreating the career from scratch (you should be able to copy and paste into the fields), and testing it before you add child/teen to the mix. Keep an unaltered version saved to go back to as you try to make it available for the other ages.

Also, be sure not to use characters other than letters in your job level descriptions and titles, if you have, as that can cause problems.

Tbh, there's so many things that can go wrong, it's hard to pinpoint without seeing it, and my abilities with XML are limited. You're definitely best off posting in the forum, though. There are a lot of more knowledgeable people over there :)

There are no stupid questions! Trust me, sometimes it only takes a second set of eyes to see something we may have missed.

Did you change any of the levels by removing them during the creation of your career in the tool? That can sometimes cause issues.

Another possible cause could be if you've used characters other than letters and standard punctuation in your level title or description.

And to be sure, check that you've got the ts4script file installed that you created using the .py file that was exported with your career. I've seen problems like this when people don't have it, or haven't created it correctly, even though it's only supposed to be for the Paid Time Off function.

Finally, my standard recommendation, if all else fails, and you get no better response at the forum, is to recreate the career from scratch. A pain, yes, but you can use copy and paste to fill in the levels and descriptions fields :)

Thank you so much for your reply, I started again and have cleared the on problem but gained another

My adult male can have a normal job and use the swimming class i made as a weekend activity or afterschool
My young adult female can only have one or the other it makes her quit
teen girl can have school scouts and swimming
teen boy can have school scout and swimming
child can have school dance scouts and swimming

ive aged up my female young adult but that dont' help im so confussed ?? anyone have any ideas i would be so greatful
thank you

Did you create a mod for swimming classes? I'm asking because I'm concerned that there may be a conflict. Does this problem occur with any other careers, either from the game or custom? Unfortunately, though, I won't be able to help on this issue because it will be technical, either way. I recommend you bring this up with Neia on the Create-a-Career forum thread. Can anyone confirm if the level descriptions actually show up anywhere in game? I'm making a career with 12-14 branches, each will have 4-6 levels. So I don't want to spend months writing level descriptions if they don't show up in-game.

Just wanted to that this thread helped so much! I was able to make a 3 tier Hero career for my My Hero Academia mods I'm making. If I can figure out how to make chance cards I'd be thrilled, so if anyone has a link or any info that'd be appreciated. Only problem is that if you quit or get fired, you don't have the option to choose a different Hero path if you want to apply again, not sure I can fix that though.

That's awesome! I'm happy to have helped :)

Chance cards have been made by a couple of people out there on the web, but none have as yet been uploaded to MTS. If you go into Sims4Studio's extraction tool, you can find the chance cards that are provided by the game. Modifying them to fit your career is complicated, but we know it can be done. We don't have any tutorials on here, and I don't know of any offsite either, sorry! I've looked at trying my hand at them, too, because it would be awesome, but I'm put off by the time involved in getting it done right, without knowing exactly what I'm doing  You can certainly give it shot, though!

Careers are like that. Once you pick a track, it doesn't seem to want to let you back into the beginning after quitting or getting fired. I'm not sure if that's a game flaw or what. Possibly something to ask Neia on the Create-a-Career forum, or perhaps see if it happens on a Maxis career as well.

Keep on simming!

I bet your Hero career would be interesting to other players. You could give uploading it on MTS a shot, following the Creator Guidelines for Careers (http://www.modthesims.info/wiki.php?title=MTS2:Creator_Guidelines/Sims_4_Careers), of course ;)

Judging by your issues, it looks like I need to take another look at the progression of the Create-a-Career tool, and the Python sequence, because I've not heard of the necessity of accessing the python-lib folder. As for the .py file, that is extracted in step 11, directly from the file you get when you export your career. At least it was, and I'm going to go look on the tool site to see if it's changed :)

You only ever need one Careers_Common.package in your Mods folder, so make sure you have the latest one relative to your Game Version. Each time you export a career from the tool, you'll usually get that file because it can't distinguish if you already have it from a previously exported career.

If you're planning on uploading a career, there are 3 scenarios:

1-No Careers_Commons.package file required as the career only uses the Base game skills.
2-Yes Careers_Commons.package file required and you can include it in the .zip that you upload.
3-Yes Careers_Commons.package file required and you don't have to include it but link to the latest one on Neia's tool site

:)

now I'm off to see about any new updates...thank you for your questions! :bunny:

Edit: the placement of the python files is still the same, with the exception of the Python version you use, which is now 3.7. I'm not sure what happened with your exported files that the .py wasn't in there, but it should be :mod:

Hello!

I responded to your modding discussion post before I saw this

Here's what I wrote:

Without looking at the files, it's hard to determine what could be wrong, but you may be able to sort it out using Sims4Studio.

If you open your .package in S4S, click on the STBL (String Table) for English (or whatever language you're comfortable with), then Edit items over on the right, your in game career text comes up and if there are any blank spots, these could be your problem. I recommend asking on Neia's forum, however, if you haven't already, just in case someone there can give you more technical help. I have noted that some people with similar problems also may have some characters in their career text that the game doesn't like. For example, numbers, special characters like &%$#, etc, can cause problems, so double check that you don't have any of those in there.

Hope this helps!

Yes, it's most likely the update causing issues. Neia's really good about updating the tool, so once that happens, creators will have to update their careers again and then they should work. Thanks for your patience everyone!

The latest patch broke custom text, but there's a workaround (https://midnitetech.tumblr.com/post/184246280767/41619-patch-update) that can be used until the next patch.

No, you cannot. The best you can do for those currently, is to modify the game files using an XML editor like XML Extractor (http://www.modthesims.info/d/563256/xml-extractor-for-the-sims-4.html), s4pe (https://github.com/s4ptacle/Sims4Tools/releases/), or Sims 4 Studio (http://sims4studio.com/).

My custom career keeps throwing a LastException error. How can I fix this?

ETA: It also mixes everything up. Screenshots are placed where they're not meant to be and the branches are mixed with other branches. For example, the Pediatric branch is switched with the Nurse Manager branch which causes the levels not to match. I've double checked everything and it keeps doing this.

Unfortunately, I can't answer in regards to technical issues with the tool itself, except to make some suggestions. You're best off posting in the Create-a-Career forum :)

But, there's a way to make sure the images are attached to the correct branch, and that's to check in s4pe or Sims 4 Studio that the instance numbers attached to each picture match those found in their respective branch information files. I'm best with S4S, so I'll explain it using that :)

1. In the DST Image line for each image, get the instance number 2 columns over.
ie. B4AD6E382153A0F4 in my example
2. Then, click on the Career Track Tuning line that is supposed to match up with that image. Look in the XML tab on the right for the line that looks like this (your numbers will be different) :
T n="icon_high_res" p="InGame\UI\Icons\Career\Career_Business_hires.png">2f7d0004:00000000:B4AD6E382153A0F4</T>
3. Make sure the instance number from the DST Image matches the instance number in that line of the XML in the appropriate Career Track Tuning line. If it doesn't, just copy and paste as necessary :)

It's a bit convoluted, but it works for me :bunny:

It doesn't look like anything is wrong based on your images, so I'm a bit confused. Once you've created the .zip and put the files in there, you right click on it and rename it from .zip to .ts4script. Have you done that? I'm sure you must have since you've created careers already

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this. A moderator's work is never done! ;)

Okay. At the 4 minute mark, you create a folder and put the .py and .pyc files in it before putting them in a new zip. Do you always do this? I normally put them directly into the zip. I'm wondering if this may be the issue. Instead of missing a step, you've made an extra one with the folder. Do you see what I mean?

Try making the zip first, empty, then add the .py and .pyc files to it directly, then change it to a ts4script file. No folder required. This is shown in Pic 14 :)

I'd love it if you'd keep me posted on your progress! :bunny:

I Tried and no luck. Could I send you my files and you try? I sent you my Firefighter career.

I've recreated it for myself, and while doing so, noticed the steps for Python have changed! I have updated the tutorial for now.

However, the paid day off is still not working for me, either. I'm having a few glitches in my game, so there must be a conflicting mod somewhere, or there is a problem somewhere in the new updates by Neia (which I highly doubt!). I haven't truly played in quite a while, but have been attempting to do so with Island Living, which is awesome! I'm going to go through my own conflicts and test my own careers as well, as Neia has mentioned they need to be re-exported.

The good news is it's not just you, because you may have seen on the Create-a-Career forum that others are having trouble with the PTO phone option as well :!:

In the meantime, double check your own mods for conflicts, and we'll keep an eye on the forum for any further communication regarding this.

Edit: You may also want to remove all other careers that were installed before Neia's update on June 29, 2019, and remember to replace the old Neia_Careers_Commons.package with the new one. I'm going to retest your FF career that I recreated with all other cc careers removed, and I'll update this post with the results
:)

And remember, PTO is earned, so the Sim needs to work a few days to be able to use this option.

You removed the part in the tutorial about C://Python33/Python.exe -O
Is it needed anymore?

CMD doesn't recognize "import" as a command either.

It doesn't seem to be required anymore, that's right.

Even though you'll still get an error when doing the import procedure, the correct resulting file shows up in the pycache folder :)

That could be, if you exported it before it was updated that day. Maybe try re-exporting, if you are still having issues.

I was able to get one of my careers successfully updated, but my other one, while it works, will still not give me the PTO option on the phone. Frustrating, but I'm not giving up!

Has anyone figured out the PTO problem yet? I took all of my mods out (deleted the localthumbcahe, etc), re-exported my careers post 6/29, and none of my careers seem to have “Take Vacation Day” except for the original Maxis careers. It just has “Find a job” “Quit Job” or sometimes the negationable bonus option.

I don’t own Island Living yet if that helps any.

Have you taken the steps described starting with 12a? There should be no issues if you follow them. 12a tells you how to make your package folder files into the required .package, skip step 12b, then step 13 details how to use Python to get the ts4script file. Be sure you have the correct version of Python as linked at the beginning of the tutorial :)

If after following the steps it's still not working for you, please detail what steps you took, and we'll see if something's missing.

I'm getting stuck at the Python step. It doesn't let me import my .py file (Baveigar_Careers_ClinicalPsychologist, a Python file) into either cmd or Python. I type "import Baveigar_Careers_ClinicalPsychologist.py" without quotations and it doesn't recognize it. That .py file is currently in a different folder on the computer. In my _pycache_ folder I do see "Baveigar_Careers_ClinicalPsychologist.cpython-37" but no .pyo file at the end. What am I doing wrong?

I am currently having issues with my own custom careers where my sims won't go to work. I have contacted Neia for a possible solution on the CAC tool forum.

That worked!!! Thank you so very much!!

hi, i have a problem. since yesterday the career builder has dubbed me the main career in one branch, if I modify the branch or the main career the other one changes and vice versa. If I deleted one of branch , It deleted also the main.

also testing the career in the game I can not choose the various branches but only the main career automatically takes me.

I'm sorry because I had created a career with 5 branches :'( andi I don't want to reacreat it if it is possible.

Hey! I was experiencing the same problem since the last patch update (7/4/2020). No matter what I did, things would get messed up. I had to recreate everything, like a new career altogether. But before you do, be sure to save all the descriptions you have in a word doc. That way you can just copy/paste everything, without having to rewrite them. As for the other details (work hours, objectives etc.) you'll have to re-do them.

I'm not aware of any problems like this right now, but I've been off dealing with some real life issues recently. As mentioned, it would definitely be a good idea to save the descriptions you want to use in a document, and redo the career, tbh. Best of luck! :)

What am I doing wrong?I don't think you're doing anything wrong, I think maybe you don't have the extension view on in your folders. This might help, if that's the issue: https://fileinfo.com/help/windows_10_show_file_extensions

Please let me know if that doesn't help, so I can try to assist you further, if necessary! :)

Hey Guys,
First of all good job on the mod!
I followed through to the end, and my mod shows up in the sims with everything correctly except for the text descriptions.
Any Idea how to help?

using Conda with python 3.5
the import exception I get is :
"ImportError: No module named 'sims'" (I imagine this is correct since sims is not a standard python package)

Edit: even when running python -O I still get a .pyc file

Unless I am misunderstanding, you are supposed to get a .pyc file in the python folder as per this update in the tutorial, and the following step:

http://static.modthesims2.com/images/smilies/cop.gif 14JAN19 -- .pyo will now show up as .pyc when completing the Python portion of the steps, beginning at step 15.
15. Go into your Python location on your computer (ie. C://Python37) where you put your .py file, and go into the folder _pycache_. There should now be a .pyc file in there. Pre-December 2019 this was a .pyo file. If not, go back and redo the actions in steps 13 and 14, paying particular attention to the http://static.modthesims2.com/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif at the end of Step 14.
Copy and paste that file to your career location file on your computer. Rename it to remove .cpython-37

Hi, thanks for this. I'm sorry I have a beyond basic question...but what are STBL files? I very obviously haven't a clue I'm just trying to update CC careers whose creators aren't active / haven't updated the careers that I don't want to loose. It's only for personal use.
