This is a new mesh, and means that it's a brand new self contained object that usually does not require a specific Expansion pack (although this is possible depending on the type). It may have Recolours hosted on MTS - check below the description for more information.
This is a featured upload! It showcases the best talent and creativity available on MTS and in the community.
"Illumutations" - Transformable Multi-Model Shelf with Built-in Lights
by Numenor and Peter_Halland

Tired of wasting an entire table to place a single little flower vase, or a phone?
Illumutations is the answer to your prayers!

It's transformable: change its shape to 1, 2 or 3 shelves in a click! (The shelves must be empty!)
It's illuminated: each shelf has a built-in light that can be set to "always on", "always off" or "automatic"!
It's a space-saver: each "Illumutations" multishelf can host up to SIX objects!
It's usable: the sims can interact with the objects placed on the lowest level!
It's realistic: no one lines up perfectly the ornaments on the shelves... Each object placed on the shelves will have its own unique position and orientation!
It can be placed everywhere: under a window, over a floor stereo, even over a toilet!
It's recolourable: if the many beautiful recolours included in the package aren't enough for you, you can create your own! (Frame and glass are recolourable separately)

The "Illumutations" Multi-shelf works with any game configuration, from the base game to Mansion&Garden (i.e. all existing games).
You can find it in the catalog under "Surfaces / Misc" (available for Community lots, too).

OFB users please read: in order to ensure compatibility with the non-OFB games, this multi-shelf is NOT placed in catalog along with the Maxis shelves. Nevertheless, it CAN be used in your business lots, to display your objects for sale. There are only few limitations, that you should keep in mind:
  • The Multi-shelf can host only small objects that are supposed to be placed on surfaces: objects (even if small) that are supposed to go only on the ground can't be placed on this shelf. For instance, you can place on it craftable flowers, but not a toy xylophone.
  • The Multi-shelf can host Maxis and custom objects: there is no difference (no hack needed).
  • When setting the price of the items, you can't click on the shelf, like you do with the OFB shelves, because this would put for sale the shelf itself

Poly Count - In its full configuration (3 shelves): 1550 Verts / 1928 Faces.

I did a little experimenting, to see how objects reacted. I don't know if any of this stuff was tested, and I apologize if it was and I'm taking up forum space. Just in case it wasn't all examined, I figured I'd post my list here. Keep in mind, that I didn't test every item in every slot, but a bunch of items in all different slots. If an item didn't work, I tested it further to determine if it was slot-based, or item based.

I tried all the Maxis items that were small enough and logical for shelf-use. Here's what I found out:

1) All Maxis items will sit on the shelves EXCEPT small appliances and toys. (I was a bit bummed that you couldn't put toys up on shelves, but oh well.) Even larger items will work, although they intersect shelves above them. (They work nicely on the top shelf, though.)

2) ALMOST all Maxis items that sit on the shelves, also WORK on the shelves. (This includes items in decor, lighting, electronics and miscellaneous.) ALMOST all items that work on the shelves, work from ANY shelf, although animations are sometimes... odd.

Notes:
* All decor items that should be viewable, are viewable from ANY shelf.
* The phone and the radio work from any shelf.
* Radio Controlled Car: Will sit on shelf, but cannot be interacted with, no matter which shelf it's on.
* Single-layer cake: Will sit on any shelf. I had my shelves against a wall on one side, and my Sim kept giving me an "I'm blocked" attitude when trying to reach the cakes against the wall, EXCEPT for the one against the wall on the TOP shelf. All the cakes away from the wall, were accessible. (Although, I never got a serve or eat option, just a "Clean Up" option.)
* Wedding cake: Reacted exactly the same as the Single-layer cake.
* Alarm clocks: Both the old-fashioned and electronic alarm clocks will work from any shelf, although the animation plays as if it's sitting on the bottom shelf.
* Anything that needs to be removed from the shelf in order to be manipulated, will not be returned to the shelf. The Sim places it on the floor. Animations work correctly for taking the items down, though. Even from the high shelves.

Custom Content:
- Currently, I only have the Bank Add-On from Retail Sims installed. It includes things like ledger books, bank books, studying manuals, piggy banks, investment gold, etc.

* Bank Book: Action times out and Sim never even approaches the shelf.
* Business (Study Book): Reacts the same as the bank book.
* ALL Piggy Banks: Sim takes the item down from the shelf, and the correct height animation is played (he reaches UP to take the ones on the top shelf down). After performing the action, the Sim places the object on the floor.

An interesting thing to note, is that items do not appear to be randomly turning (for that more-realistic look) except on the top shelf - which, coincidentally, is also where the cakes work in BOTH slots.

Anyways, I figured this could serve as both kudos and bug report? lol After all, the post says that items only work from the bottom shelves, and there are a whole bunch of items that will work from any shelf (if you don't mind the odd animations at times). These guys didn't give themselves enough credit! =)

I hope my little "research project" helps someone!

Netjera, thank you very much for the detailed information

There is a reason why things picked (by the sims) from the shelves are not placed back in the same place; every object requires a specific surface type (cake: dining table or counter; book: low/end table, etc) and each surface can be of one type only: the shelves can't be considered by the game a counter, a dining/low/end table or a shelf at the same time. As a consequence, the game just ignores my shelves, when looking for a proper surface where to put the objects.

As for the "can't reach" attitude, often this is due to an excessive rotation of the slot; I tested and re-tested the two lower slots many times, with any kind of Maxis objects (but I never tested a cake, for example ), and my results were very similar to yours. I thought that it was a good result to be able to use the phone, the radio, the alarm clock and other "interactable" objects.
I never tested custom objects, but from what you write, I think that they just suffer for the slot position and rotation, compared to their specific clickable area; probably there is no way to predict how a custom object will work with the shelf, without an actual test, and therefore I thank you again for reporting about those Bank Books.

Lastly, about the random rotation, the slots are fixed, and they have always been; in the main post, I was only explaining how each slot had a (fixed) rotation of its own, different than the other ones, so to give a more natural feel. The random rotation that you've seen on the top shelf is given by the cake, not the slot (the cake sometimes rotates itself when placed down).

Oh gotcha! Well, I still think it's wonderful. Easily one of the best objects in my game. (Now if only I could find an old version of Monique's Hacked Computer, my life would be perfect, lol.)

If you're interested, I'll continue posting about custom items and their reactions. I've only recently reinstalled the Sims, and so I'm literally reinstalling custom content in small bits, on a daily basis. I can check the items I install as I add them, and provide a head's up, in case anyone is interested.

Thanks again for such a great item!

(Btw, is this a "mod" or a "hack" and what's the difference in game terms? I find that a bit confusing, lol)

Mods and Hacks are basically the same thing; I rarely use the term "hack" because there's something "evil" connected to this word. Every piece of custom content is a "hack" because forces the game to behave differently than it was designed for.
Personally, I consider a "mod" whatever changes the game behaviour (sometimes in a way unexpected by the game creators, but favoured by them) according to the general game principles and rules: recolours, custom objects etc.; while a "hack" forces the game to behave in a way that the game creators would possibly dispise.

Here at MTS2, we usually divide uploads in three main categories: normal custom content, objects mods (that affect single objects or a single object type, providing more or different interactions) and global mods (that affect the whole game and change the game behaviour without intervention by the user).
The term "hack" is rarely used, and usually means a global/object mod that provides "impossible" benefits, like instant max motives etc.
