Antinous was Emperor Hadrian's lover. He was declared a god after he tragically drowned in the Nile while touring the empire with Hadrian, who travelled the empire more than any other emperor in Rome's history. The area where he died was also named after him and it retained the name until this day. Antinopolis. The cult of Antinous was hugely popular in ancient Rome, with temples dedicated to him throughout the empire. In fact, there have been more statues and likenesses of Antinous uncovered, in comparison to any other Roman. He is arguably the first homosexual in history who was declared a god.
