My school blocked MTS2!

Okay, and? It's classified as a computer game site. Which it is. Which you apparently aren't allowed to view from your school.

Yeah...its been blocked at my school for eons. So is S2C and any website that has the word "game" in it. Basically everything is blocked at my school. Ah well. I only get on the computers there to do school work so whatever.

When I was network technician at a school, I made darned sure that MTS2, S2C, MATY, INSIM and all other sites I could think of were banned. School is for learning, not socialising. I also monitored all web traffic on the network so that anyone using a proxy site to get around our filter proxy would be detected. And BANNINATED permanently from the internet! Muhahahahaha!

Where I go to school we can use the computers in the breaks, so I think it's nice to be able to play games. As long as we don't download stuff or watch inapprobiate things, we can do pretty much whatever we want.

Well, here in the UK the council run schools all have filtered internet as standard, anyway. We just added to it- and the web monitoring was begun initially as a student was being bullied via Bebo (this is a long time ago when Bebo was still new). We found the bullies, and kept the monitoring in place. Basically we monitored everything- and it came in useful. We found a movie recorded on a mobile phone of a kid being beaten up before it got spread around (and the police arrested the people involved on our evidence). We also had enough evidence in web history and lack of work in a 'home' directory to stop a student being admitted to the sixth form- the teachers did not want the student admitted due to poor work performance, but the parents appealed against the decision. When we showed them screenshots of the student using a proxy site to surf porn sites, plus a years worth of web logs and feeble attempts to hack our server, they had to admit that perhaps their child was not sixth form material! If schools do not monitor web traffic then you will get a situation where children could be exploited, and possibly upset by content that is unsuitable. The school is 'in loco parentis' and has a responsibility to protect students, and promote an environment where they can learn safely and without distraction. Any school which does not take this seriously and does not monitor/ filter web traffic is irresponsible, and should not be allowed to teach minors.

Well, at least your school does it a little bit more subtle then mine. If you look at a blocked site at my school you get a big black ACCES DENIED with red borders, lol. It feels then if you were watching some porn site, but in fact you just wanted to see a game site, hah.

I never tried MTS2, though. I try to hide my Sims-addiction from the people I know. *giggles*

sims2community is not banned from my last school, now in my new school i don't know as i haven't been to a computer yet, i'm busy with school work you know they do administrate but i guess just that that site is unknown/ unharmfull to them.

but they did have a program that ANY internet/ IM way is blocked during class itself. so you're screwed anyway. they unblock it when you get permission from the teacher when his class ends early.

They do get a 'filtered' screen for sites banned through the county ISP- but it's a cartoon character on a white background, The emails are filtered too- one teacher had her whole cookery class caught by the filter for making them email her recipes using chicken breast!

My school pretty much trys to block everything, but say something like 'PACMAN' some sites it's blocked some times it's not, cause it's a popular game and on LOT of of sites the school can't keep track of them all, we are too are allowed on computer at breaks. But somes site are banned which have no use to use lot of pupils, like we had a supply teacher for ICT, and we had to evaluate animations and our supply said hwat about peppa pig ( her kids goes on it- so she knows) so we all tried to go no the to watch the animation but the blocked peppa pig, i mean come one, i know there's games but its a site aimed at kids like 3-6 not people in secondary school, i have no idea why they block sites like that though, they also block insurance webisite aswell which is a TOTAL pain 'cause i've got to compare LOTS of diffrent insurance companies for business studies. LOL.

MTS2 got blocked all of the schools I went forever ago. Thankfully I'm out of school but srly as much as I hate to say it.. school's for learning. Why would even need mts2 on a school computer anyway!
At several of my past schools computer gaming sites, flash sites, and anything involving alcohol, smoking, or drugs were banned. =] My little brother (11 at the time) actually got suspended for two weeks for googling the word "boobies" I thought it funny at least.

Everything sim related is blocked at my school... Except i can read the legacies on LiveJournal.
Im surprised i haven't been caught sending emails my friends (Were not allowed)
Oh and we get all of our fun from Ebay... Searching for stupid stuff.

Omg, when i tried to email my cousin at lunch asking if she can dropped in my money for a trip,(i had forgot my phone and did'nt know her number) Every email site is banned in my school, nevermind, anyway in lessons i use computers i never have time to go on games and such

Oh, Its Microsoft Email... We are allowed on it but just not in lessons (When i email them)
Also if a teacher does see you on it (Lesson or not) They can give detentions.

Schools have computers now?

My school has a couple of them which are in a locked classroom, for informatics (or what's it called, a computer class), though I've never actually seen them. Usually when the teachers need the computers, they bring their own laptops. And students don't really need computers since most have cellphones with internet access.

MWT: does'nt your school have ICT? or business studies?

They block practically everything at my school, even some genuine educational sites. Never tried MTS2 though.

God, at school we're forever looking for game sights that aren't banned! Sometimes someone finds one first period and by third its been blocked XD And you can't search anything in google either, for example for Biology I tried to search 'cockrel' and it got blocked!

I work in a Student Services department at one of my local colleges and was doing a quiz on drug abuse for our Health Awareness week and every site was blocked, even ones that belonged to local councils who had their own information about drug abuse. I always find it difficult trying to find information for things like that, and spend most of my time explaining that a certain site isn't harmful and actually education based just so I can get my job done!

Hehe, it is a nuisance when it prevents students from researching. But- consider the alternative. If the internet was not moderated for students, you could end up in a situation where a troublesome student tries to shock a classmate by showing them a picture of a gruesome wound. Or, a 12 year old who has never seen a member of the opposite sex naked accidentally clicks a link which takes her to a site showing graphic sex. I think I prefer to be annoyed when I cannot search for cockerels, thankyou very much.

If you Google something and click on 'Cached,' you can get into just about anything, at least you can at my school. I'm surprised the administration hasn't figured this out yet. It really doesn't matter to me, though, because the usernames of publications students such has myself have certain restrictions lifted. We do all of our business through Gmail and sometimes need to look at pop culture/public venue websites to get certain information, so I could get on MTS2 if I wanted to. Needless to say, I have better things to do at school (like WORK) than troll around MTS2.

At school, I'm sure we had stuff blocked but I don't remember exactly what. E-mail was fine and so was neopets if I'm not mistaken.

We used to change the desktops on the Macs in computer class; Calvin and Hobbes was pretty popular. Or have "magnet wars" where you had to defend your computer from opposing magnets. Of course, if you "lost" your computer would be broken the next day so you'd have to share. D:

Oh yeah we used to be able to change desktop backgrounds! I think I had a Mighty Boosh one a couple of years ago. Then they changed it to some crappy adobe job with a different 'thought of the week'. I prefered my Vince Noir tyvm.
